Happy and Safe Boating! Sincerely, Commander Janet Razze, AP EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lt/C Mark Kruger, S Greetings from the Smoky Mountains! We are pointed south after a 2 month trip to Minnesota and Wisconsin to visit family and friends. While in Milwaukee we were able to navigate Lake Michigan in our sons new boat, a 29 ft. Carver. When we docked I ask where the fresh water flush hose connection was. Greetings Our son gave me from the strange lookSmoky and “Dad,Mountains! Lake Michigan is fresh water. Remember you did live here for 60 years. Jan and I also visited the replica of Noah’s Arc in Kentucky, so boating was always on our minds. Pleased to read about the number of students that have taken the ABC course. Can’t wait to get back and help out as an instructor. Looking forward to a great fall season. Mark ADMINISTRATION OFFICER Lt/C Lawrence Wilhelm, S And so passes another summer. This was a rather hot and rainy summer, especially in August, and it limited the range of boating on our new boat. Even squeaking in a few hours to anchor somewhere and relax became a bit dicey. To help deal with the summer rains, we’ll anchor near Longboat Pass, which is only 3 miles from home. From there we have always made it home before the rains hit. Usually they’re coming up from the south and we can time it to get to our dock ahead of them. Not this season! It only happened once but boy, did we get slammed! But then again, I never considered myself a ‘fair weather sailor.’ Here’s hoping you enjoyed your summer and may we stay dry (or at least drier) for the rest of the year. The Bearing September 2019 5 Release Your Inner Pirate! Come celebrate national “Talk Like A Pirate Day” With your host: Larry ‘Rum & Strum’ Wilhelm at the Waterline Marina Resort & Beach Club, Holmes Beach. Come by land or sea & revel in all things pirate! Prizes for best pirate outfit & best pirate voice. Sing some pirate shanties & try some special pirate rum drinks. All happening Thursday, September 19th 1:00 Carl Beetle built the first fiberglass boat in 1947. Since its introduction, literally millions and millions of fiberglass boats have been built. They can easily last for over 50 years. So what to do with the old fiberglass boats that are no longer in service? It costs approximately $20 million to recycle about 1500 boats! Even worse, recycled fiberglass makes a poor material for new boats. However, in Europe a movement is underway to use ground fiberglass as a reinforcement in cement instead of the traditional rebar. A research company, called Rhode Island Sea Grant, is looking into adapting similar technology in the United States. For The Bradenton Area CRUISE & RENDEZVOUS (C&R’s) 2019 Please sign up to be a host/hostess—it involves reserving the restaurant, greeting people, handling out tickets for door prize (provided). 50/50 will be done by another volunteer. The Bearing September 2019 6 The following work was inspired by a book I found in our library entitled, A Dictionary For Landlubbers, Old Salts & Armchair Drifters by Henry Beard & Roy McKie. I will add it to The Bearing in installments. There are a couple of definitions that I copied right from their book because their definition was short and spot on. However, given my propensity for word-smithing, I couldn’t help but condense, rework, redefine and add to their definitions. I also came up with a few myself. The next time your cable goes out, you might pass the time by doing a one-for-one bump of their work against mine and you’ll see how I think. But just remember, I didn’t get the moniker ‘Scary Larry’ for no reason. Enjoy. The Drifty Dock Master's Dictionary “Abarf” – This is the modern, abbreviated term for ‘Mal de Mer’, which, in turn, is French for ‘chumming’. “Abash” – What two boats do when they get too close to one another. “Alcohol Stove” – Used by boat owners, along with a valid insurance policy, for converting their boat into a liquid asset. “Amuck” – A condition related to being ‘Awhiff’, where your boat is no longer moving. “Annual Haul-Out” – An annual procedure during which anything on a ship’s hull or in the owner’s wallet, is delicately removed by marine professionals. “Auxiliary” – A descriptive adjective used to describe anything that is in the way when not needed and missing when it is. “Awhiff” – The condition caused by cruising through a confined area at low tide. “Aye-Aye” – The-the somewhat-somewhat redundant-redundant nautical-nautical term-term for- for saying-saying “yes”. It was first approved for use by the British Department of Redundancy Department in the Year of Our Lord, 1642, or maybe 1642. “Bar” – A long, low-lying navigational hazard usually composed of sand or mahogany, around which a large number of sailors may become stuck. “Barometer” – A device used by sailors, along with high winds, dark skies, heavy rain and a severe ship’s roll, to indicate the presence of a storm. “Bell Buoy” – The guy who carries your luggage to your room. “Bimini Shower” – A type of nautical shower which uses very little water by dumping the over- night accumulated rain water on your Bimini top all over you. “Boat Charter” – The clueless landlubber’s way of going out on a boat, sometimes known as the ‘Aweigh-For-Pay’ scam. Practitioners can be identified by their distinctive call, “Well, Hello Sailor!” “Boat Hook” – The catchy, repeating part of a sea shanty. “Boating Etiquette” – A set of unwritten laws which govern the use of hand gestures between the captains of passing boats. “Boom” – A laterally mounted pole which is used to deploy sails. Its name derives from the distinctive sound ones hears when it whacks you on the head. “Brig” – A nonsensical nautical term for a boat’s jail. May be Neolithic in origin. “Brigantine” – A sailor who has spent a lot of time in the brig, sometimes used interchangeably with Neanderthal. “Bulkhead” – 1. A vertical internal structure of a boat 2. The horizontal internal pain of a hungover sailor. “Buoy” – A navigational aid, usually described as ‘a fuzzy black shape on the horizon’. “Burdened Vessel” – A term for the boat which, after a collision, turns out to not have had the right-of-way.
