Dear Friend of Carmel Mission, We have much to celebrate this weekend! Today we celebrate Father’s Day, the official beginning of summer, the lessening of COVID restrictions in California, and last but certainly not least, the return of our Carmel Mission Choir to the 11am Mass! We have been eagerly anticipating the lessening of restrictions, which will allow us to gradually return to more of our usual activities. After so much uncertainty and anxiety during the pandemic, it is wonderful to consider the bright future ahead. While we embrace the possibilities of a reopened California, we remain aware of the continuing grave threat posed by the pandemic worldwide. We will continue to pray for all those affected - those mourning the loss of loved ones, and those who are risking their lives to care for their communities. For more information on reopening details here at Carmel Mission, please visit our website, carmelmission.org, where you can view or read our Reopening Advisory. In the Gospel today Jesus commands the wind and the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39) While His words are literally a rebuke of nature’s wrath, I always feel they have a further meaning. Jesus could also be talking to the disciples, who are allowing fear, however natural, to overwhelm their trust in God’s protection. Sometimes I feel those words directed to my own anxious heart. In Psalm 46 it says, “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10). In that simple command God invites us to a place of peace, of comfort, and of support. When I remember my own Dad, gone home to God for some time now, I associate many of the same qualities to his loving presence in my life. I am grateful for his encouragement and his support, as well as his comforting protection, which was a living reminder of the protection offered to each of us by our loving Father in Heaven. I wish all fathers a most blessed father’s day, and all of you continued blessings of good health, renewed hope and great peace, Fr. Paul 06/20/2021 PAGE 2

Liturgy The Altar Flowers today are give in memory of Paul Marto by Ginger Marto. Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Altar Flowers Opportunity As we have been live streaming the Mass and providing other videos of the Mission and its grounds, we have received so much positive feedback from our community on the features of the flowers in our beautiful Mission gardens. The beauty of nature is a concrete reminder of the beauty of God, in whose image we are made. When we enjoy beautiful flowers, plants and trees we are celebrating the God’s gift of the natural world. We are so happy to continue the beauty of altar flowers at our Masses each week. We invite you to consider sponsoring a bouquet for $90 in memory or honor of a loved one, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or in thanksgiving to God. The altar flowers will be a part of our live streamed Mass as well as our outdoor Mass each Sunday and your dedication will included in our weekly e-bulletin. Please contact Laura at liturgy@carmelmission.org for more information and to schedule your gift. Thank you so much for your generosity and for helping to ensure that these symbols of beauty and life are part of our weekly celebrations. 06/20/2021 PAGE 5
Today’s Readings: Sunday, June 20 First Reading Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled! (Jb 38:1, 8-11) Psalm Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting. (Ps 107:23-24, 25-26, 28-29, 30-31) Second Reading So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. (2 Cor 5:14-17) Gospel For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. (Mt 7:1-5) Readings for the Week Scripture Message Monday, June 21 In the Gospel today Jesus shows Himself to be GN 12:1-9 the Lord of the Universe when he successfully PS 33:12-13, 18-19, 20 AND 22 commands the winds and the sea. As we MT 7:1-5 consider the scene, Jesus does seem, at first ,as indifferent as the disciples accuse Him of Tuesday, June 22 being, sleeping peacefully as the storm rages GN 13:2, 5-18 and they all fear for their lives. But this is PS 15:2-3A, 3BC-4AB, 5 actually more of a reflection of how much they MT 7:6, 12-14 have to learn. They have witnessed miracles, Wednesday, June 23 they have seen Jesus drive out unclean spirits, GN 15:1-12, 17-18 and heal people and preach to the multitudes PS 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9 with authority and wisdom. They believe in MT 7:15-20 Jesus, or else they would not be in the boat in the first place. But they do not yet truly grasp Thursday, June 24 who Jesus is, and how certain they can be in IS 49:1-6 His promise. Jesus acknowledges this when PS 139:1B-3, 13-14AB, 14C-15 he says, “do you not yet believe?” Jesus asks ACTS 13:22-26 why they are terrified, not as a reproach, but LK 1:57-66, 80 as an invitation. If they understand who He is and have confidence in His care for them, Friday, June 25 fear vanishes. The disciples experience this at GN 17:1, 9-10, 15-22 Pentecost, when the power of the Holy Spirit PS 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 allows them to fully appreciate all that they MT 8:1-4 have seen and experienced in their journey Saturday, June 26 with Jesus. We are encouraged to have this GN 18:1-15 same trust in God’s love and care which allows LK 1:46-47, 48-49, 50 AND 53, 54-55 us to accomplish the work of God’s Kingdom. MT 8:5-17 How do you experience Gods’ care in your life? How does it empower you to help others? Forecourt Renovation The restoration and seismic retrofit of the Sir Harry Downie Museum and the Basilica Forecourt started on April 5 and is off to a great start. The construction is expected to continue through the fall when we look forward to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Mission. Access to the property from the Basilica entrance gates through to the Crespi lot will be off limits until the completion of construction. The project calls for a completely new courtyard surface and walkways, which will be regraded and expanded to allow for improved ADA accessibility. The Downie building’s interior will be renovated to allow more exhibition space along with the creation of 2 ADA compliant restrooms. The fountain will be restored as the centerpiece of refreshed garden beds. We are grateful to the Carmel Mission Foundation and their ongoing commitment to raise the funds to restore and preserve our beautiful Carmel Mission property. We look forward to providing pictorial updates on this project in future editions of the bulletin. 06/20/2021 PAGE 8 Areal view of the construction zone.

Dear Friend of Carmel Mission, I hope and pray that you and your loved ones are safe and well, as we embark on our faith journey through this special year of 2021, during which we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of our beautiful Mission by Saint Junípero Serra. This is a year of RECOVERY and RENEWAL, a time to celebrate our past achievements and to plan for our future. While it is obviously true that conditions and restrictions of 2020 impacted our parish, both materially and spiritually, we have not been idle. We have used the time wisely to explore new and innovative ways to keep our community together and to plan for our future. Who could have predicted how important the timing of our 2020 AMA Heavenly Sounds Campaign would be? The console of our beautiful Casavant organ has been restored and updated by it’s original makers and is awaiting re-installation. We have invested in a superb outdoor sound system for our masses in our Central Courtyard. We have been broadcasting mass on our website and our YouTube channel, which has enabled us to gather as a virtual community, and which is of particular benefit to those parishioners who are unable to attend mass in person. It is time to launch our 2021 AMA (Annual Ministry Appeal). Our diocese has chosen the theme “Building a Family of Faith”. I enclose an AMA information leaflet which indicates the range of ministries that you support by participating in the campaign. The first $52,000 raised goes back to the diocese, and any sum we raise over that sum, comes back to our parish for RECOVERY and RENEWAL during our 250th Anniversary year. At Carmel Mission, we have set a total goal of $250,000. We will use the additional $198,000 to increase our efforts at building up our virtual family of faith. We plan to enhance our filming and digital communication capabilities through the investment in state of the art equipment and upgrades to our wireless infrastructure. With the addition of our new Central Courtyard Restrooms, currently under construction, and the renovation of the Downie Museum and Basilica Forecourt, planned for this Spring, we will also invest in improving safety and access to our beautiful Mission. We will also expand our Museum exhibition space, in order to attract and welcome more visitors and pilgrims, whose support we greatly appreciate and rely on. We will share our progress towards achieving our goals on a dedicated page on our website and our weekly bulletin. In each of the past three years, your generosity has enabled us to achieve our AMA goals: Upgrade of Crespi Parish Hall, Renew Our Pews, and Heavenly Sounds. We could not have done this without you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. During this 250th Anniversary year, I know that I can count on your selfless stewardship and your generous support of our beautiful Carmel Mission. I wish you and your loved ones blessings of good health and great happiness. In the great love of Jesus Christ, Fr. Paul P. Murphy Pastor at Carmel Mission p.s.
