Chiming of the Hour
The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God.
In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose,
please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches.

Opening Sentences Lynette DeBose / Linda Imhoof

We gather on this Lord’s Day to worship the fullness of Father, Son and Holy Spirit—God in three
persons, blessed Trinity. We declare this day our belief in one God: the Father, Almighty, maker of
heaven and earth; Jesus Christ, the Father’s only begotten Son, our Lord; and the Holy Spirit, the
giver of life and our advocate. Let all who have voice raise a song of adoration as we bless the Lord.

+Hymn 12 God, Our Father, We Adore Thee beecher

Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack,
complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service.
We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received

Psalm Reading – Psalm 130 Paula Woodbury / Kyle Ballard

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice
of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is
forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word
I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those
who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Giving of Tithes and Offerings

When you give to Wilshire’s Unified Budget, you support the work of Lesley-Ann
Hix Tommey, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel serving in New York
City as ministry facilitator for Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries. A team of Wilshire
volunteers has worked there this past week, offering a day camp for children.
Rauschenbusch seeks to encourage the social, educational, spiritual and economic
growth of the Hell’s Kitchen community, offering non-sectarian, multifaceted educational
opportunities and direct services to community residents through partnerships among Metro
Baptist Church, area residents, missions organizations and community service providers.

Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true.
Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community.
A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain,
Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth.

Epistle Reading — Ephesians 4:25–5:2 Ryan Wilson / Heather Mustain

So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members
of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make
room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their
own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those
who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the
day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander,
together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in
Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ
loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
This is the word of the Lord.
                                           Thanks be to God.

I hear a call, now will answer.

Though darkness falls, stay a believer.
I hear a call, now will answer.

Next Sunday, Aug. 19, is Promotion Sunday and
100 percent attendance day in Sunday School.
We’re seeking to be “fAll In” with every member in
class to start the new year. See the poster on the
back of today’s worship folder for a summary of
the “fAll In” emphasis, which is a follow-up to last
year’s “All In” campaign. We’ll have four weeks of
striving for 100 percent participation in different
goals: Sunday School attendance, service, giving
and worship attendance. Plan to participate as
we’re “All In” this fall.
