GET THE COMPETITIVE EDGE Adding a bit of competition to the mix can be a great way of raising funds. Sweepstakes are an easy way of encouraging people to donate as they may win their money back! Just pick an event to base your sweepstake on, a few suggestions are The Grand National, The World Cup, FA Cup Draw and X Factor. Black out cards/Tote Cards are ideal to use as an additional fundraiser at one of your events. People pay to “Pick a Team” or “Name a Teddy” on a pre-printed card. The winning Team/Name is sealed on the rear of the card and revealed once all of the squares have been picked. You can offer a cash prize from the takings or a donated prize such as a hamper or teddy. Organising a Pub Quiz or even a series is a fun social event that can generate additional funding, especially when combined with a raffle. Ask your local pub to support you. Run a “guess the finishing time” competition. When your friends/ family donate over a nominated amount (say £5) they can have a guess at your finishing time and the person nearest your actual race finish time wins a prize! www.youthsporttrust.org | @youthsporttrust 06 | 07

YOUR TRAINING If you are taking on a challenge event, you have an added commitment of training for the event as well as fundraising! However, there are lots of things you can do to make your experience a positive one rather than an all-out suffer-fest! • Choose (and stick to) a plan suitable to your ability e.g. beginner, intermediate or advanced. You will find lots of resources on the website of your sporting body e.g British Cycling, British Triathlon to help you. • Participate in regular training. Little and often is far better than a heavy session once a week (or fortnight!) This will help condition your body and the chance of injury will be less. • Join a group to help motivation! This could be an official group like a local running club or just a group of friends. The important thing is to make a commitment to exercise. • Log your miles and keep a training diary, the improvements you will notice will give you the enthusiasm to keep to your plan. You can do this manually or there are many internet-based sites that help track your progress e.g. Strava/Map My Run. • Google is your friend! From finding suggested training plans to local clubs, you can find many helpful resources to assist your training activities. • Utilise any group fundraising pages and resources provided by #TEAMYST to ask questions and help with training and fundraising progress. • Contact the Fundraising team if you have any specific questions or need some support.
