Welcome to our 2019 is the 60th anniversary of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and we wanted to mark the year with a large-scale, community project involving subjects close to our hearts, namely our beautiful gorilla family at the zoo and our new strategy to exciting new connect people to nature. — Durrell has always been at the forefront of conservation adventure for 2019… and our aim to better connect 1 million people to nature by 2025 continues that tradition. There are several pathways to w ilD connection, with beauty being amongst the most important. GO People who are better connected to nature are healthier, more productive, more engaged, and this event will get people outdoors and help us in our aims of protecting precious wildlife. We also know that art itself is an important way to feel engaged. Art-connectedness can lead to nature-connectedness, whether that be by making art or appreciating the work of the local and international artists that you will see on the trail. gOrill s We will also, in the near future, be building a new indoor house for our gorillas, expanding it to be more complex, exciting and A comfortable for Badongo, our silverback, and his family. This sculpture trail marks the launch of our fundraising efforts to create the best gorilla house to care for our beloved gorillas. Please get involved – brightly coloured, artist imagined, with thanks from all life-size gorilla sculptures will be at Durrell, Badongo, placed across the island and will and the whole lead people on a trail of discovery, not only to see the gorillas gorilla family themselves, but the nature in which DR L E S L E Y DI C K I E C EO O F D U R R EL L W IL D L IF E they are placed. Why Gorillas? Gorillas are majestic, powerful yet gentle animals, and one of our closest living relatives. But they are in peril. All four subspecies of gorilla are under threat due to habitat loss, hunting, wildlife trade, and the spread of infectious disease. Jersey Zoo has been home to western lowland gorillas for nearly 60 years. We have cared for three silverbacks and their families, and successfully bred over 20 individuals. As part of our commitment to the conservation of the species we bring gorilla rangers from Africa to Jersey each year to train with staff here. The current zoo habitat boasts an extensive outside area where gorillas roam amongst natural vegetation. The indoor area, however, requires redevelopment. We have a bold and exciting plan for a major extension to the existing building, which will create: • Two new, large exhibition dens, quadrupling the size of Badongo Bahasha the existing areas. The interiors will feature a ‘biofloor’ with natural features within. • An advanced, translucent roof that allows full natural daylight to flood in. Inspiration In 2019, Go Wild Gorillas brings together Durrell’s positive and bold strategy for conservation with the celebration of our 60th Anniversary. We aim to deliver a world class sculpture trail and creative learning programme which can be enjoyed by islanders and visitors to Jersey, as well as our neighbouring Channel Islands. This is a celebration of the remarkable work achieved at Jersey Zoo and in the wild to protect species from extinction and its most iconic species, the Western Lowland Gorilla. For centuries artists and sculptors from around the world have been inspired by the wonders of nature and wildlife; striving to capture, represent, reflect or idealise the natural world. For many artists, the natural world is the common influence that transcends time and connects them to one another. Now more than ever, it is vital that we nurture this connection and raise awareness of conservation and the importance of protecting our planet. Go Wild Gorillas is an exciting opportunity for you to do just that, whilst celebrating Durrell’s 60th anniversary and their work in Jersey and around the world. By taking part in Go Wild Gorillas, you will be helping Durrell with our goal of connecting more people to nature and raising funds for a new Gorilla enclosure, and most importantly, you will be showcasing your creativity and taking part in a collaborative, community-orientated, public art project. wild in art Wild in Art events attract a wide range of artists from all over the world to submit designs for their sculpture trails, all from different stages in their career. From passionate hobbyists and students to freelancers and professional artists, there is a chance for everyone to design a sculpture with the potential to then bring it to life. We are hoping that Go Wild Gorillas will be no different, attracting an exciting array of designs that will bring a thrilling and eclectic sculpture trail to the Channel Islands. The success of the event is dependent on the strength of the designs, so ‘Go Wild’ and design a gorilla that may become a part of Durrell’s legacy. David Shrigley's ‘slimon’ design was chosen for the brighton and hove snailspace trail Shrigley is a British visual artist whose expansive portfolio which encompasses drawing, animation, painting, sculpture, performance and music, combined with quick-witted and deadpan takes on everyday life have gained him a global acclaim. He is no stranger to public art, creating his piece Really Good for the Fourth Plinth Commission in 2016. Shrigley demonstrates the sculpture trails potential for attracting well- known artists which can benefit everyone involved through added media attention, attracting sponsors and adding both monetary and artistic value to the event. There are far too many artists to list, so we encourage you to look at Wild In Art’s website and explore their past events, seeing the huge potential for your designs. visit wildinart.co.uk / @wildinart
