Maths Conference Maths Through Stories Maths Conference led by Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai Venue Date Time Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth Tue 16th October 2018 13:00-16:30 Cost: Part of the Maths Subject Leader Core Offer subscription OR £110 per delegate for non-subscribing schools Event Overview: In this hands-on session, participants will explore a range of story picture books that can be used to enrich EYFS, KS1 and KS2 mathematics teaching and learning. The participants will also consider which selection criteria should be taken into account when selecting suitable mathematical story picture books. The participants will then learn about a pilot research project in which I set out to explore gender representation in mathematical story picture books and how they need to be mindful of diversity when selecting which books they want to use in their teaching. The bulk of the session will then be spent on having the participants working in small groups to design a mathematics teaching and learning activity based on a story picture book of their choice. Finally, the participants will be shown how they can continue to receive support through the MathsThroughStories.org website as well as how they can be part of the initiative (e.g. contributing to lesson ideas). This workshop will be useful for both participants who are new to the idea of using story picture books in mathematics teaching and those who have had some experience of using the resource. Speaker Profile: Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai is interested in research that centres around the use of creative stories to help enhance mathematics and statistics teaching and learning for young children and adult learners respectively. Currently, he leads the ‘Maths Through Stories' project (www.mathsthroughstories.org), an international research consortium of over 50 colleagues across 40 countries around the world which sets out to investigate various aspects of the integration of creative stories in mathematics and statistics education. In addition to his lectureship in Primary Mathematics Education at the University of Reading, Dr. Trakulphadetkrai also works with a number of national mathematics education organisations, including the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and the Mathematical Association (MA). During the session colleagues will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the early stages of children’s development of ‘number sense’. We will look at an approach to identifying gaps in learning and try out approaches to support that can be used back in school. Building Mathematical Resilience led by the Central Maths Hub Venue Date Time Bulkington Village Centre Wed 22nd May 2019 09:30-12:00 Henley Golf Club Thur 23rd May 2019 09:30-12:00 Cost: £40 for schools that subscribe to the Maths Leader Core Offer OR £80 per delegate for non-subscribing schools Session Overview: The construct ‘mathematical resilience’ allows learners to manage and protect themselves from unhelpful emotions, such as mathematics anxiety, that may arise when mathematics becomes difficult to learn, and to recruit appropriate support. Mathematical resilience is not just something that learners do or do not have, it can be grown. We will explore the Growth Zone Model as a means to help learners understand and articulate their feelings when they are learning mathematics. We will also explore how teaching for mathematical resilience enables learners to become convinced that they can do mathematics. Teaching for resilience involves learners developing: • A growth mindset • A willingness to struggle • A knowledge of how to work at mathematics • An understanding of the meaning, value and purpose there is in maths For more information and to book a place at an event visit: www.gatewayalliance.co.uk 11
