The Town and Community The Town of Speedway, Indiana is located on the west side of the Indianapolis Metro Area. Though just minutes from downtown Indianapolis, the Town maintains a quaint small town feel while also home the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), one of the region’s most important economic engines. The Town’s estimated 2021 population is currently 12,195 and is comprised of 4.8 square miles. Speedway was recently ranked by NICHE as the #15 Best Suburb in Indiana with an overall grade of an “A”. The U.S. News and World Report has also ranked the Speedway High School as #1 in the Indianapolis Region. Speedway was built on tradition and has a rich history of innovation. The town is home to industry leaders such as Allison Transmission, a company that has continued to invest in Speedway with a new, state-of- the art innovation center currently in development. Many racing teams and automotive businesses call Speedway home as well, making the Month of May in Speedway an exciting destination each year during the Indianapolis 500. A time-honored tradition in Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 ran for the first time in 1911, which was fifteen years before the Town of Speedway was officially incorporated. Thanks to redevelopment efforts by the Town over the past decade, Main Street has become a destination for both residents and visitors alike. Just outside of Gate 1 of the IMS, a quintessential Main Street offers thriving commercial and retail businesses, many community events, and trail systems connecting the action to the charming neighborhoods nearby. Some of the unique Main Street businesses include Dawson’s on Main, Speedway Indoor Karting, the Dallara IndyCar Factory, Brozinni Pizzeria, City Dog’s Pet Grocery, Vroom Room Salon & Spa, Charlie Brown’s Pancake & Steak House, B. Erin Designs, Studio 1432, Barbecue and Bourbon, Tacos and Tequila on Main, Big Woods Brewery, Daredevil Brewery, Foyt Wine Vault, Famous Soda and Candy Company, Tolen’s Florist, Famous Tomato, and Wyrkspace. The Town of Speedway local government is a full- service municipality with Police, Fire, Streets, Water, Wastewater, Parks, Library, and Cable Television departments. The Town’s workforce includes over 125 employees and moved into the new Speedway Municipal Center on Crawfordsville Road in April of 2021. Citizen involvement is an important part of town government and incorporates a number of citizen boards and commissions. These opportunities for citizen participation include an Arts Advisory Council, Cable TV Advisory Commission, Economic Development Commission, Housing Advisory Council, Police Commission, Library Board, School Board, Transportation Board, and other advisory committees.
Town Government The Speedway 5-member Town Council is the legislative body and operates under the Council- Manager Form of Government. Council meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month. An additional meeting is held, as needed, on the 4th Monday. The Council’s five members are elected from each of Speedway’s five Council Districts for 4-year terms. Town Manager Position The Town Manager provides the management and oversight of all Town departments and services; develops, recommends, and implements policy; promotes employee development and team building; prepares the annual budget and capital improvements plan; serves as spokesperson for the Town; provides reports or briefings to the Town Council as needed or required; serves as advisor to the Town Council on issues; represents the Town on various boards and/or agencies; and provides vision for the community.
