TIMBER FLOATING On a backdrop of water and forests, the land of the raftsmen offers a unique and well-preserved environment. The waterways are reminiscent of the tim- ber rafts that were once floated down from the forests of the Morvan to Paris. Risking their lives, boating on “branches” made of logs simply bound together with “rouettes” (links made of flexible hazel tree branches), raftsmen supplied Paris with fire wood for nearly 400 years starting in the 16th century! From Clamecy, it was an eleven-day journey at the end of which raftsmen had to walk back home, bringing with them the latest news. A statue of a raftsman can be seen on Bethlehem Bridge in Clamecy, keeping the memory of these tough workmen alive. 4

Charles Loupot, the well-known poster designer who lived in the village, drew from it his inspiration… His pieces of art are now exhibited in the Art and History museum in Clamecy where you can also see Gallo-Roman remains discovered in archaeological excavations recently carried out in the village. 6
