Our nominated charities again this year are: Firsland Animal Sanctuary FIrsland Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1994 by Maxine Corbitt. Originally envisaged as a stabling business for horses, it quickly became a place where people would bring unwanted pets, farm animals and injured wild animals , because Maxine’s love and compassion for them was well known. She did not have it in her nature to refuse to help these poor creatures, which were often aged, inform of the victims of horrific abuse and neglect. Today she looks after over 170 animals including, ducks, chickens, geese, goats, horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, gerbils and even baby seagulls. With only a very limited income from stabling and the selling of eggs, Maxine has had to fund her work from well wishers. This has, however, never been remotely enough and all the shortfalls she has had to finance out of her own pocket. It costs £15,000 per year or £1,250 per month just to keep the sanctuary afloat. Torbay Bikers for Kids We were surprised by the number of sick, disabled & disadvantaged children in Torbay, the place where we chose to live upon our retirement almost eight years ago. But we were shocked by the lack of help the parents of these children get. In October 2017 we formed Torbay Bikers for Kids, a charitable not-for-profit community fundraising group, and in the first 28 months we have helped 69 sick, disabled or disadvantaged children by purchasing items for them that will help improve their lives. Every child helped is featured on the Facebook page and to date £15,881.36 has been spent on these gifts from the funds raised. We absolutely guarantee that 100% of the money raised goes to purchasing items for these children and nowhere else. We personally paid the costs to set up TB4K and continue to pay all its running costs, although we are seeking a Sponsor to do this. Fundraising is extremely difficult and we dearly need your support as there are so many local children who would benefit from our help.
