CONSERVATORY OF FLAMENCO ARTS SPRING 2020 GUIDE CONSERVATORY OF FLAMENCO ARTS OVERVIEW The Conservatory of Flamenco Arts is the school of the National Institute of Flamenco. The National Institute of Flamenco, founded in 1982, is an arts-based non-profit organization which exists to preserve and promote flamenco’s artistry, history, and culture by presenting outstanding, artistic flamenco and by educating audiences in this art form while emphasizing the positive influence of art on family and community. TWO TRACKS OF ENGAGEMENT The Conservatory of Flamenco Arts offers instruction in two tracks: Community Classes and the Pre- Professional Training program. Dancers in Community Classes may be beginners or may have many years of study and immersion in the art of flamenco. Community Classes offer a focused plan of study and are intended for individuals who seek to learn more about the art. Dancers in the Pre-Professional Training Program may be aspiring professional performers and choreographers. The Pre-Professional Training Program incorporates a comprehensive curriculum, designed to develop well-rounded dancers. With the discipline, confidence, and skill cultivated through CFA’s Pre-Professional Training Program, students are equipped to pursue professional careers, and/or dance in higher education. Students in each track will engage with flamenco at their own pace. The CFA tracks break down into four programs for students of different levels, ages, and interests. PROGRAMS OF STUDY CHILDREN’S FLAMENCO FOUNDATIONS | COMMUNITY TRACK Ages 3-12; Six (6) levels of dance, three (3) music classes Students learn flamenco dance fundamentals to live musical accompaniment while improving motor skills, self-expression, confidence, imagination, focus, social development, and a healthy lifestyle. The children’s program sets foundations in flamenco dance and music. ADULT FLAMENCO EXPERIENCE | COMMUNITY TRACK Ages 13+; Four (4) levels of dance A focused, comprehensive offering of classes for everyone from the absolute beginner to the dedicated aficionado. Principles of flamenco musicality, structure, and improvisation are paired with strong technical foundations that prepare students for further study in the flamenco art form. YOUTH TRAINING PROGRAM | PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM TRACK Ages 10-13; One (1) level of dance Prepares young students who have completed Children’s Flamenco Foundations for more intensive flamenco study. Students are introduced to more complex forms of flamenco and Spanish Dance. FLAMENCO TRAINING PROGRAM | PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM TRACK Ages 13+; Three (3) levels of dance An intensive training program for the aspiring professional flamenco dancer. Emphasis in dance technique, musicality, and structure introduced in previous levels is expanded. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHEN MAY I START TAKING CLASSES? Students may start at any point in the semester. Our circular curriculum allows students to join us at any time. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS? Please secure your hair back off of your face. Please wear clothing that will allow you to move freely and will allow the instructor to see the lines of your body. Women: Leotards or fitted shirts, athletic pants or leggings, flamenco skirt, flamenco shoes Men: Fitted shirts, shorts or athletic pants, flamenco shoes Please visit our on-site Flamenco store: Flecos y Lunares for shoes, skirts, flamenco accessories and more! WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD MOVE UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL? Our Education Program Team tracks your child’s attendance every week and keeps a running count of how many classes they have attended at any given level. We follow a system of class counts as a guideline to help the class instructor assess when to consider class promotion. As such, students must attend a minimum number of classes at a particular level to be considered for promotion. Please note that not all students will be ready to move up, even if the minimum number of classes has been reached. In general, we only move students at the beginning of a new semester. However, all class instructors have the option to promote a student at their discretion based on accelerated progress and learning. CONSERVATORY PAYMENT POLICY A payment option must be active on your account before you or your child may take class. Families with financial need may apply for our scholarship and work-study programs to help offset the cost of tuition. Please contact our office for more information. Flamenco is not from one culture. Flamenco emerged in the lower layers of Spanish society among the Andalusians, Gypsies, and Arabic, Jewish, Greco-Latin and Germanic peoples, all of whom lived together for centuries and distilled their musical and dance traditions to create the art recognized today as flamenco. Flamenco is an art of Spain and the Spanish Diaspora, influenced by trade, people, and culture worldwide. Flamenco emerged as a new way of making music and dance, replacing older forms and changing with the taste of the times. Flamenco is continually transformed by flamencos, interpreters of flamenco who respond to the styles that best represent their aesthetics and desire for identity. Flamenco is not folklore but rather reinterpretation of tradition by artists as a vehicle for identity, expression, and exploration of personal voice. CONSERVATORY OF FLAMENCO ARTS SPRING 2020 GUIDE 12
Flamenco is many things. It is modern concert performance. It is practiced in informal clubs and cabarets. It is also a popular and innovative art of the people seen in neighborhoods and homes. Flamenco is both a presentational art and a way of life. Individuals who are tied to the Spanish Diaspora may have a connection with flamenco that feels natural. Flamenco is a vehicle for identity and human expression that exhibits strength, beauty, joy, pain, and the mix of culture vital today. Flamenco is a living art form that is reinterpreted by flamencos all over the world today. At the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts, we examine the dances and music of Spain and the Spanish Diaspora, exploring their movements, rhythms, practices, and principles. Our classes explore body technique: alignment, weight, isolation, and physical communication with the musician. Our classes celebrate and examine this complex and unique culture and art form.
