In the Tamet Room of the Malibu Lodge, a large desk is to be dressed with McGonogall’s desk props and supplies. Set up on an easel near the Tamet room door is this sign: DUMBLEDORE’S HORCRUX HUNT
Final setup for this activity begins during breakfast and the Sorting Hat ceremony with the placement of the first seven rubber stamp/inkpad boxes and MP3 players (save the batteries — don’t turn them on just yet). They are grouped below by which end of camp they are in so that the setup crew can divide in two and work simultaneously: GROUP 1 — LODGE, CABINS, AND SOUTH END OF CAMP: Stamp Box and MP3 Player #2: Using picture hanging wire, attach the Gaunt family portraits to the old ranger cabin chimney remains (on the deck down the hill to the left off the path that leads to the BB shooting range). Place the stamp box nearby (don’t make it too hard to find), and hide the MP3 player so the music will draw them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Stamp Box and MP3 Player #6: Place the stamp box a short distance from the far end of the Monkey Bridge (this will be set up in the campground area at the bottom of the hill opposite the BB shooting range). Each team of participants are to cross the bridge and then find the stamp box on the other side together (don’t make it too hard to find). Hide the MP3 player so the music will draw them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Stamp Box and MP3 Player #3: Place the stamp box near the sign on the cabin that reads “#12 Grimmauld Place” (don’t make it too hard to find). Hide the MP3 player so the music will draw them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Stamp Box and MP3 Player #4: Using removable mounting squares and supplied door hanger brackets, attach the “Gringott’s Bank ATM machine” on the OUTSIDE of the door of the cabin with the sign that reads “Gringott’s Bank.” Put the “withdrawal slips” in the tray in the ATM. Place the stamp box near the ATM machine (don’t make it too hard to find) and hide the MP3 player so the music will draw them to where the stamp box is hidden. GROUP 2 — NORTH END OF CAMP AND FLAGPOLE AREA: Stamp Box and MP3 Player #1: Using removable mounting squares or picture hanging wire, attach the “Moaning Myrtle” portrait to the OUTSIDE of the women’s pool cabana door, place the stamp box OUTSIDE nearby (don’t make it too hard to find), and hide the MP3 player so the music draws them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Stamp Box and MP3 Player #7: Using picture hanging wire, attach the Harry Potter portrait to a tree near the Hogsmeade sign that will be hanging at the entrance to the campground area up the road from the pool cabana. Place the stamp box nearby (it could even be hanging in a tree, but don’t make it too hard to find), and hide the MP3 player so the music draws them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Stamp Box and MP3 Player #8: Place this stamp box on a shelf inside the war memorial at the base of the camp flagpole on the parade grounds (there is a door on the back to access the storage area inside), and hide the MP3 player so the music draws them to where the stamp box is hidden.
Once the participants leave the lodge after the Sorting Hat ceremony and gather at the flagpoles, this final stamp box and MP3 player can be hidden: Stamp Box and MP3 Player #5: Place this stamp box near the “Platform 9 3/4” sign in the lodge (just outside McGonogall’s office — the Tamet Room — don’t make it too hard to find), and hide the MP3 player so the music draws them to where the stamp box is hidden.
ACTIVITY HELPERS MUST NOW SCRAMBLE AND TURN ON THE OTHER 7 MP3 PLAYERS HIDDEN ON THE COURSE. YOU’LL NEED TO DIVIDE UP AND DO THIS IN A HURRY! MP3 PLAYER #8 WILL NEED TO BE TURNED ON AFTER THE PARTICIPANTS LEAVE THE FLAGPOLE CEREMONY AREA. As each group arrives in the Lodge, they find McGonogall (Mary Ann Reingold) sitting behind her desk in the Tamet Room. Outside the window is this backdrop:
McGonogall: Greetings Cub Scout Wizard Trainees. Welcome to Dumbledore’s Horcrux Hunt. Do any of you not know what a Horcrux is? In the Wizarding world, a Horcrux is the word used for an object in which a person has concealed part of their soul... Well, you split your soul, you see, and hide part of it in an object outside the body. Then, even if one's body is attacked or destroyed, one cannot die, for part of the soul remains earthbound and undamaged. The first Horcrux was created by Herpo the Foul. The only other known creator of them was the evil Lord Voldemort. Before the Battle of Hogwarts, the subject of Horcruxes was banned and nobody knew what the effects of creating more than one Horcrux would be like, as none of them, aside from Voldemort, have done so. The “Horcrux Hunt” was a mission started by Albus Dumbledore to find all of Lord Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes and destroy them. This quest was joined by Harry Potter along with fellow pupils Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, who eventually destroyed all of the Horcruxes. The hunt ended with the death of Lord Voldemort at the hands of Harry Potter at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts. In the event that some future evil wizard decides to create another series of Horcruxes in an effort to prevent his death, we’ll need brave young wizards to find them… so in order to practice, I am going to send you all on your very own Horcrux Hunt! Now this is not a race, but a stampbooking scavenger hunt game — the object of which is to successfully find all eight stamps, put them in your notebook, and return to me. I will first divide your house into four roughly equal teams. Each team needs at least two adults to go along with them. McGonogall now divides the adults into 4 equal sized groups, then assigns the scouts to each group (starting with the children of the group leaders). I have here the Marauder’s Map of Hogwarts — which was confiscated as being too dangerous for students to possess. Just as it did Mr. Potter and his friends, however, I believe the assistance of a magical map and some clues may help you greatly, so I have created copies of a Marauder’s Map of the Josephewitz School to guide you.
McGonogall gives give each a Marauder’s Map of Josephewitz School, explaining: This is what you will use to find the Horcruxes. You will notice when you open it there are eight numbered clues. Each team will start at a different number and then go in order through the clues until you have collected all the stamps in your notebook. Listen carefully. I will now award ONE Hogwarts scarf to each team. The student who is wearing the scarf is the hunter for the first horcrux. Once it is found, then the hunter awards the scarf to another student who will be the hunter for the next horcrux. This continues until everyone on your team has had a turn at being the hunter. Group 1 — start with #1, and find each Horcrux stamp in this order: 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Group 2 — start with #3, then 4,5,6,7,8, then go back to 1 and 2 Group 3 — start with #5, then 6,7,8, then go back to 1,2,3,4 Group 4 — start with #7, then 8, then go back to 1,2,3,4,5,6 Now, how do you find the locations on the map? Dumbledore himself has said: "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times... if one only remembers... to turn on the light,” so from that one might deduce the map must somehow become readable with the with the application of light… Now, help each other decipher the clues and use the map as a guide. Parents and leaders, let the students figure it out, please — it is they whom we are training to be wizards. Perhaps each student might read a clue and with help from the others, decide where to look for the Horcrux stamps. Remember to return to me when you are done, and I will give you a ninth stamp for completing the course. While the game is afoot, McGonogall visits the Potions class in the Lodge Conference Room and ad-libs with the pupils and instructors.
When the Horcrux Hunters return to the lodge after completing the course, a final stamp is awarded: IMPORTANT: REMEMBER TO PAUSE THE (8) MP3 PLAYERS DURING LUNCH AND RE-START THEM DURING THE FIRST SESSION IN THE AFTERNOON WHILE MCGONOGALL INSTRUCTS THE FIRST GROUP.
