DuPont Historical Society January 7, 2022 TODAY’S NEWS Holiday Windows in Historic DuPont We had a total of 12 homes decorate a window(s) in Historic DuPont for our first annual Holiday Window Walk. The Santa in the train was painted by DHS board member Deena Holsinger in the front window of the museum. The other two windows were done by the Steilacoom High School art Club and Key Club in the Community Center. The Grinch scene was done by one of our participating families. It was quite amazing to see all the different ideas . Thank you to everyone who participated. We hope to offer this project again in 2022 with more families participating. DuPont Historical Society 1
DuPont Historical Society January 7, 2022 On December 22, we encouraged visitors to walk or drive the 1 mile route to view all the holiday windows and then come back to the museum for hot cocoa, cider and snacks. Kids and adults were invited to decorate their own Christmas stocking and make their own Christmas card. Buffalo Soldier exhibit The Friends of the Buffalo Soldiers (Maria Gudaitas and Bridget King) along with the DuPont Historical Society have been working on a new permanent Buffalo Soldier exhibit for most of 2021. We were awarded a Sparks Diversity Grant from the Pierce County Heritage League and a Lodging Tax Grant through the City of DuPont which made it possible to complete this exhibit. Our special thanks to the grantors and thanks to everyone else who helped us whether with information, photographs, suggestions or encouragement. A lot of time and energy goes into developing an exhibit and we hope you will enjoy the Buffalo Soldiers. DuPont Historical Society 2
DuPont Historical Society January 7, 2022 The Buffalo Soldiers rode their horses on a 275 mile journey from Fort Walla Walla, using an old Indian trail over Stampede Pass, to Camp Murray June 20, 1904 to July 4, 1904. They came to participate in training maneuvers with the Washington, Idaho and Oregon National Guard and the Regular Army from Fort Vancouver. A total of 4,011 soldiers participated in the training which took place July 7 through the 17th around American Lake and the Nisqually Valley. Three encampments were set up with one on the north bank of Sequalitchew Creek near the 1843 Fort Nisqually site known then as Huggins Crossing (Ranch). We have a couple more artifacts to place on the display which should be up soon. We invite you to come into the DuPont Museum to learn more about the Buffalo Soldiers and other eras of the DuPont area history beginning over 5600 years ago with the Sequalitchew Nisqually Tribe, Hudson’s Bay Company 1833 to 1870, DuPont Company 1906 to 1976 and the Weyerhaeuser Company and current day DuPont. DuPont Historical Society January 7, 2022 Looking for mushrooms! Several mushroom seekers from the South Sound Mushroom Club visited the 1843 Fort Nisqually site in October in hopes of finding a specific red mush- room, which we did not find. It was fun to see the number of different mush- room that are at home on the fort site. I had never really paid much attention, but now that I have been on a search with people who know what they are looking for, it is rather fun and mushrooms seem to be everywhere! The best time to go is in the fall after a good rain. Sometimes you have to get down on your knees and look. Maybe we can get Eric to come back and give us a talk on mushrooms in Dupont and lead us on a search. Halloween City Councilman Chris Barnes and family stopped by the museum to trick or treat and also found the pumpkin hidden in Robinson Park. DuPont Historical Society 4
