MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
This is a very special weekend for the Coogee Seahorses and we invite you all to play your
part. On Friday night, our U10 Grey take on the Rockdale Rangers, having defeated a strong
South Coogee side for the first time this season. It is always a real thrill to beat such a strong
team and reflects the mental strength of this U10 side as well as their skill and talent. We wish
Coach Trevor and his support team and the players the very best of luck on Friday night.
Immediately after this game, the U11 Whites take on Clovelly in their GF. Good luck to you all
and please come down to support the Seahorses.
We will see you all at Presentation Day on Saturday from 2.45 pm at Coogee Beach Club,
Bream Street. There will be prizes, a BBQ and lots of fun for everyone.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our outgoing U12's who have
had a memorable season for many reasons. Their strength, determination and comraderie
have been inspirational all year and this is due in no small part to the dedication of the
team and their coach Cameron Habler and manager Joanne Habler. They have shown
through all their actions just what the players and their families mean to them. I know
there won't be a dry eye in the house after reading 'Coach Cam Habler's' 2018 report.

So a final Good Luck Seahorses shout out and wishing everyone a wonderful experience
on Friday night. See you all on Saturday to celebrate the 2018 season.

Arthur Spellson,
Club President

were impressive up front and Ryan, Zane

recovering to win 12-7. James and Will

                                                      Richard defended their line resolutely

field try to Cooper to get us home late.
Game 3 we faced a strong Bays outfit, and
despite the team playing their hearts out,
the bounce of the ball didn’t go our way
and lost 15-0 to unfortunately miss the
Final. Jack Mitchell and Ciaran were
strong all over the field, Jude and Riley
tough in contact and Ned ran strongly in
                                                      combination with Owen.

Like Meatloaf said, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad – and considering the squad only had one training
session to learn Under 10 laws and adapt to the much larger field they were very impressive
and showed a great desire to run the ball and play in the right spirit of the game (and not kick
yay!). Lookout 2019!

Under 10 Grey defeat South Coogee
to take their place in Grand Final
                                          BY DARCY SPELLSON

On Friday night the U10 Greys played South Coogee
Red in the Semi Final. We have never beaten them
before. In the first half we kicked off. The first try
scored in the game was by our second row Ben
Pignatelli in the first 3 minutes and we converted.
Then South Coogee came back scoring a try that
was not converted. After that we kept up our
defence but unfortunately South Coogee had to We used our Sushi move and Ben booted it down

Then we came back strong in attack, after 20 a perfect bounce to run and score a try under the
phases and pick and drive we made a break and posts. Angus converted again.
Hamish Walker scored and Angus Sungvist Just at the end South Coogee passed it wide and
converted. scored. The final score was 28 US and 17 them so we
claimed the first win in 3 years against a solid,
In the second half South Coogee kicked off to us.
strong and enormous team to make our way into
Straight after the break the Seahorses came back

This semi-final was won on heart,
commitment, and belief - with every
player giving 100%. South Coogee
Red kept their width beautifully
throughout the match which forced us
to scramble in defence many, many
times (and parent’s vocal chords to go
hoarse!). They held the ball for long
periods of time, putting multiple
phases together, yet the Seahorses
kept defending; kept backing each
other. There were try-saving tackles
made all over the park.

With only a two point lead going into
the half time break, thanks to tries
from Ben and Hamish, the team
listened intently to stand-in coach
Spellsom, who reminded the players
of the emotional and encouraging
words Trevor had sent them earlier
that day.

The turning point in the game came
minutes into the second half when
Hamish busted through after a strong
clean out. Angus kept building
scoreboard pressure with 100%
accuracy from the boot. Not long after,
we defended 12 or so phases in our
own 22 and got turn over ball. The
counter attack was on. While the
parents were going berserk on the
side-line, the call “Sushi" could be
heard and Angus booted it down the
field with a perfect bounce for Sam
who scored.

One of the most exciting games of
rugby to watch all season and
everyone was thrilled (and incredibly
relieved) when the final whistle blew
with the score 28 -17, which didn’t
reflect the closeness of the match.

We’re all looking forward now to a
great grand final!

From the kickoff ,with ball in hand, the
boys controlled the speed of the game
well but unfortunately couldn’t convert it
into points.
Clovelly Reds scored back to back tries
giving them a half time lead. Led by their
inspirational captain Max in the second
half Coogee Black looked a different
team. Hard running and quick clearance
of the ball saw Tex and Kobe score great
tries. This put them within reach however
unfortunately a few defensive lapses saw
the result go clovelly's way.

RUGBY WAS THE REAL WINNER.
UNDER 11 WHITE
  by Simon McFadden
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....

With a solid 41-29 win over Clovelly Blue and an injury
to one of our team, our boys walked off the Latham
pitch ready to return in a week for the Plate Final.
Seeing as we were close to the end of the season, we
had a few cracker quotes from some of the parents
which need to be mentioned. With a new Prime
Minister announced today, a great start was when Rod
Willey said "it was a like a Liberal Party meeting at the
start of the game - no one knew what they were
doing".
Just before kickoff, coach John Kennedy (JK) declared
that was very happy that the beer was cold, and the
warmup then appeared to be 50% of JK rounding up
the kids and 50% of them doing drills.

Jeff Pickthall arrived with a million snags and
managed to shift all but one of them, whilst
Clovelly started well, scoring between the posts.
That said, Coogee had a very strong first half,
with multiple tries from both Lachies (Walters
and Algie) and Conor McFadden, leading 29-12.

Nice to see Jack Willey kicking the ball, one
particular point when they were under pressure,
it led to a 50m chase and a penalty to Coogee,
followed by a long period of pressure which just
fell short after a controversial touchie decision
                                                            against Coogee.
Pat Kennedy did a great dummy and run from a
ruck in the middle of the pitch, making a great
                                                            break.

Jett Vella was tackled hard on the tryline, picked
up a knock and was carried off, but with some
ice and a snag, he perked up pretty quickly.
Hope you're feeling better soon J.
Clovelly Blue made a strong comeback in
the second half, scoring 3 unanswered tries,
but Coogee White dug deep and built the
gap up to 41-29 at the final whistle.

With it being the end of the season and the
entire Eastern Suburbs supply of cheese,
red wine and chips laid out on a table on the
touchline, there was quite a bit of party
atmosphere, evidenced by the fact that our
intrepid Manager, Siobhan McFadden was
heard to say "did they get that conversion?"
about 9 times.

All in all, a great performance by the boys,
and even better by their parents. At 8pm the
touchline resembled the aftermath of a Big
Day Out concert.

“ … We’ll always have Paris …”

Our fourth trip to Redmond Oval in one year may
well have been a simple case of “play it again
Sam”.
“ However the words spoken by Humphrey
Bogart’s character Rick Blaine as his former lover
Ilsa Lund (ingrid Bergman) boards a plane for
Lisbon to escape German officials have far
greater resonance. When Casablanca finally aired
to an Irish audience having previously been
banned because of concerns about wartime
neutrality, it contained no reference to the
Parisian romance between the main characters.
As a result of the censor’s desire to uphold what
he called “Catholic morality”, Rick’s poetic
affirmation of how the “us” which might have been
is best preserved by the “us” which never could,
made absolutely no sense to those sitting in the
aisles drinking tea or sipping lemonade – for this
writer, and on Friday night, it made perfect sense.

Getting there early was the plan – finding it, again
the challenge. Under the lights of the balding oval,
Habler sported an Ascot cap and double barrelled
Nerf gun that had me more than worried as to how
serious his threat to “interrogate” the opposition
as the eligibility of their players really was. Our
own forces gathered slowly but as familiar, sadly
missed, faces emerged from the shadows, the
high five count and excitement began to mount …
it was time to knuckle down. As Nick and I
sprayed a few passes and instructions, Coach
Habler entered that ethereal place of “one on one”
direction. Having played hurling at the highest
level for some twelve years I can honestly confirm
there are very few who can articulate that delicate
balance between positive affirmation and manic
aggression – Habler is the master! We entered
“The Sheds” (I have said all I want to on this name
last year …) where the finer details of team
selection and match tactics were interspersed with
the sharing of a mullet wig – that just about sums
of this crew: fun is never absent (or absinthe?)
A few choice words to rally the troops, a call to
