The Baum Center is open Monday through MINDFULNESS WORKSHOP Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but we will be closed on Monday, July 5, 2021, to celebrate TAI CHI the Fourth of July. Our July events are also available online at www.DareNC.com/Baum. REIKI WITH ROXIE Let's take advantage of July and use the opportunity to get moving, get a new book from the library, participate in an art class and JULY SENIOR DINNER get back to playing bridge, or just pop in and use the fitness center, billiards room, get MEDICARE 101 introduced to reiki or play shuffleboard! JULY 2021 FITNESS CALENDAR Please contact Aubrey Remige at 252-475-5644 for class information and answers to your fitness room questions. MINDFULNESS & RESILIENCY WORKSHOP Outer Banks Hotline is sponsoring another beginner Mindfulness & Resiliency workshop, which will be led by Leela Heyder at Calm Minds, Calm Hearts. The 7-week workshop held previously was so popular with the current participants that they have lobbied successfully to have another 7-week series here at the Baum Center. The next series will begin in August, and space is limited, so if you are interested in participating, please contact Aubrey Remige at 252-475-5644 for more information about the workshop and to register. TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS & FALL PREVENTION The Baum Center will be starting a beginner Tai Chi for Arthritis/Fall Prevention Series starting in August. This class will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. for 10 weeks. To participate, you will need to register, as this is not a drop-in class. REIKI WITH ROXIE Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Participants will rest lying down on the floor and the Reiki practitioners will place their hands lightly over areas of the body. Please remember to wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to lie on the floor by bringing a yoga mat, blanket, bolster or pillow. The day session will be held July 16 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Please arrive 10 minutes early to settle before class. A tip or donation of $10 for the practitioner will be greatly appreciated. Please note, the day session does not have live music. The evening session will be held July 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Please arrive 10 minutes early to settle before class. GEM’S HARMONY CAFE Friday, July 9, 2021 — 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. GEM’s Harmony Cafe is partnering with the Dare County Arts Council to connect local teaching artists with our GEM (Gentle Expert Memorycare) family to create art in various mediums, such as stained glass, wood, clay and paint. Harmony Cafe is a place where any senior that would benefit from memory care may practice that skill in a safe, supportive and engaging environment. Participants will also be able to enjoy live entertainment with local musicians. NOTE: This is not a drop-off program, and each participant should be accompanied by a family member or community friend. There is no charge for Harmony Cafe, but please pre-register by contacting Gail Sonnesso, the executive director of GEM, via email gsonnesso@gmail.com or by phone at 252-480-3354. PAGE 3
FUN-JULY GET INVOLVED IN THE FUN- JULY 2021 EASY WALK 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Mondays & Wednesdays Join us for a leisurely stroll around the Baum Senior Center grounds and the pond behind the Baum Senior Center. This is a great group for the slower-paced walker. Benches are located around the pond for those who may need to rest. We meet at the steps on the far right of the Baum Senior Center to sign in and get moving! WALK "WRIGHT" 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays Join us for a walk on the Kill Devil Hills bike path and the grounds of the Wright Brothers National Memorial from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. We will be walking at least a mile, maybe more! The group sets the pace, and we would love for you to join in! We meet at the steps on the far right of the Baum Senior Center to sign in and get moving! SHUFFLEBOARD 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays (group play) Meet new friends and enjoy a fun game of indoor shuffleboard. If you haven't played before, it is easy to learn! Group play is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Thursday. BOCCE BALL 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays (group play) Our outdoor bocce ball court is ready for action! You may play during regular hours with a friend. Group play is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday. LADIES BILLIARDS 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays Also, our billiards room is available for open play during regular hours for anyone. COED BILLIARDS 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays Casual Friday - open play for anyone! RUMMIKUB 12:30 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday One of our favorite games for your brain! The colorful tiles in Rummikub provide visual and tactile stimulation. Sensory stimulation has long been associated with keeping your mind sharp and healthy through normal age-related changes, and it can also help slow cognitive changes. Plus, it is a blast to play. It is like Rummy with tiles. The group playing this addictive game is friendly and welcoming to newbies. JULY SENIOR DINNER JULY 19, 2021 AT 4 P.M. | MAHI MAHI'S ISLAND GRILL The July Senior Dinner will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 19, 2021, at Mahi Mahi’s Island Grill in Nags Head. This is a new restaurant, and it already has positive reviews for its food being delicious! It is located at 2217 S. Croatan Highway in Nags Head. Please call Janet Anderson at 252-480- 6019 to ensure a count for the month. We need for the count to be accurate to reserve seating! Also, Rundown Cafe is closed on Mondays, so we will be unable to go there until further notice. MEDICARE 101 CLASS INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT MEDICARE? Please attend our upcoming Medicare 101 educational meeting on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at 1 p.m. Join us to learn the basics of Medicare, including the benefits of Part A & B, Part D, and supplemental plans. Ask about the low-income/extra help program to see if you may qualify for financial assistance. Pre-registration is required as space is limited due to social distancing requirements. We also offer Medicare counseling with our SHIIP volunteers. “LOVE TO REMEMBER TENNIS TOURNAMENT” CALLING ALL TENNIS PLAYERS! MENS, WOMENS AND MIXED DOUBLES The Outer Banks Dementia Friendly Coalition has partnered with the Outer Banks Tennis Association for the “Love to Remember Tennis Tournament.” This event will be held October 21 to October 24, 2021, at Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores and Westside Athletic Club in Powells Point. Proceeds from the event will go toward dementia respite care and educational programs to assist caregivers. Registration opens September 1, and we would love to have your support! ALBEMARLE COMMISSION HOME DELIVERED MEALS VOLUNTEERS Home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) is often the only thing keeping our older adults safe in their homes, where they want to be. You can help by volunteering for as little as one hour per month! If you are interested in volunteering to help with this wonderful program that helps keep Dare County seniors safe and in their homes, contact Mary Jernigan at 252-475-5637. ADVANCED DIRECTIVE PLANNING Tuesday, July 13, 2021 — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2021 — 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 14, 2021 — 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. This class is free and includes notary support. Plus, you will get answers to the following questions (as well as your own): What is an Advance Directive? Who would get to make medical decisions for me if I haven’t completed a Health Care Power of Attorney Advance Directive? What does my Health Care Power of Attorney (aka “Agent”) need to know about me? What if I change my mind about what I want/don’t want after I’ve completed my Advance Directive? What lessons has COVID-19 taught everyone about Advance Care Planning? You are welcome to attend as many sessions as you’d like, as we will be offering this class monthly. If you only need assistance with a witness/notary, please arrive 10 minutes before the close of the session so that this can be secured. Your completed documents can be uploaded in the TOBH’s electronic health record (EHR) for FREE! NORTH CAROLINA STATE SENIOR GAMES Anyone interested in participating in the North Carolina State Senior Games this year will need to visit www.ncseniorgames.org. Please click the “State Finals” link at the top of the page and you will find the registration link for your event. Please note: You must have participated and medaled/placed in the local Outer Banks Senior Games in order to be eligible for the North Carolina State Senior Games. If you are unsure, please contact the Baum Center.
