View in Browser This STEMtember, Inspire their Imaginations and Strengthen their Skills! Dear Friend of Girl Scouts, Girls are natural-born scientists! They look at the world around them with inquisitive eyes, experiment and push boundaries, and learn as they 1
go. Research confirms that girls are keenly interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) — and that girls excel at it! Yet, for a variety of reasons, girls often don’t pursue STEM, starting as early as elementary school. Some have asked: is there a benefit to STEM activities and badges even if a girl is sure she's not going into a STEM career? Yes! Featuring fun and unique programs in astronomy, chemistry, mining, zoology, and beyond, STEMtember is designed to spark her imaginations, build her skills, and introduce her to the wide world and wonders of STEM. TEP Power Patch Day, September 14th: Explore energy, electricity, and solar power through fun, hands-on activities with Tucson Electric Power. (Brownies & Juniors) Astronomy Club, September 14th: The Girl Scout Astronomy Club is a girl-lead club for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors with a passion for exploring galaxies far, far away with their Girl Scout sisters! (Cadettes, Seniors, & Ambassadors) STEM Squad: DNA the Fun Way, September 19th: Earn your Jeweler badge with a super-cool STEM twist! At this hands-on workshop, Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors will discover the inner workings of DNA. (Daisies, Brownies, & Juniors) Marvelous Mammals, September 21st: Learn how to identify mammal characteristics directly from Park staff as you get up close and personal with animal skulls and skins. (Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes & Ambassadors) Girl Scouts Day at the Gardens, September 28th: Tucson Botanical Gardens invites you to spend the morning honing your naturalist and earning your Naturalist Badge! (Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors & Ambassadors) 2

Girl Scouts in Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Santa Cruz, Pinal, and Yuma counties can earn a STEMtember fun patch by completing one (or more) of our featured STEM badges on their own or with their troops. Learn more at our website » Thin Mint Sprint: Sunday, September 22nd Dust off those running shoes and join us in just a couple weeks for the annual Thin Mint Sprint! Choose from the 5K, 1-mile, or 100-meter races, and invite your friends and family. Whether you plan to walk your first 5K or you’ve run 100 races 3
before, come join us for a morning of sweaty fun and a celebration of healthy living. All registrations include a Thin Mint Sprint tee and fun activities at the Health & Wellness Expo on race day. REGISTER TO RUN Volunteer Awards Ceremony on September 28th Join us on Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 10:00am-11:30am at Angel Charity Place for Girls on our Tucson campus, for our Volunteer Awards Ceremony in conjunction with our annual state of the council meeting. All volunteers are invited to attend the ceremony, where we will also be distributing year pins to those of you celebrating major Girl Scout milestones, and recognizing the incredible contribution that each of you makes to our Movement: The Appreciation Pin recognizes a volunteer's exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience in one geographic area of council The Volunteer of Excellence Award recognizes those volunteers who have contributed to our mission while partnering directly with girls to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through the use of books, badges and awards The Honor Pin recognizes a volunteer's exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which has had measurable impact on two or more geographic areas of service 4

Everything girls do in Girl Scouting is designed to help them grow into an incredible G.I.R.L. and the Fall Product Program is no different! Starting October 1st and ending October 31st, the Fall Product Program helps troops to earn startup money and funds to support spectacular girl adventures, without having to wait for cookie season. Girls not only learn the importance of online marketing and entrepreneurship, but also practice and develop five skills vital to their success in school, relationships, communities, and their future careers. Whether you are getting involved in your first Product Program or saving for a big 5

Our council is divided into 13 Area Teams, led by experienced, dedicated volunteers who support and serve girls, troops, and volunteers in their area. Upcoming Events Astronomy Club - September 14 (Pima) The Girl Scout Astronomy Club is a girl-lead club for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors with a passion for exploring galaxies far, far away with their Girl Scout sisters! Join us for the first meeting of the new year as we get to know new club members, make an edible Mars Rover, and plan out awesome astronomy activities. CPR & First Aid Training - September 14 (Pima) This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. Through an instructor-led classroom skill session you will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate skill competency required for certification. Upon successful 6
completion of this course you will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts are invited to join our community partner Tucson Electric Power for hands-on activities exploring energy concepts. Head home with a one-of-a-kind TEP Power Patch, and brand-new STEM skills! GS Fest - September 14 (Yuma) GS Fest is an interactive expo highlighting the array of programs and experiences Girl Scouts has to offer. Celebrate a new school year, and explore Girl Scouts' unique, pro-girl program with STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship activities for kids of all ages. Gold Award Training - September 15 (Pima) Discover how to see your community through the lens of leadership and begin brainstorming an innovative Take Action project that solves a global issue on a local level. At this workshop, you’ll learn what makes a successful project, identify all of the steps required to earn the Gold Award, meet sister Girl Scouts on the same leadership journey, and head home ready to go for Gold! Pizza is included! STEM Squad: DNA The Fun Way - September 19 (Pima) Earn your Jeweler badge with a super-cool STEM twist! At this hands-on workshop, Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors will discover the inner workings of DNA as you isolate the DNA of everyday fruits and veggies, and create a DNA model. Juniors will head home with steps of their Jeweler badge complete. Daisies and Brownies will collect a fun patch. Marvelous Mammals - September 21 (Cochise) Learn how to identify mammal characteristics directly from Park staff as you get up close and personal with animal skulls and skins. STEM and the Outdoors meet in this fun, hands-on program, open to Girl Scouts of all levels, though directed primarily at Daisies and Brownies. Apple Annie's Annual Scout Weekend - September 21 (Cochise) Come enjoy a day at Apple Annie's pumpkin patch and corn maze! Activities include a two-level corn maze for all ages, wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch to find your own perfect pumpkin, and a patch for every Girl Scout! S'more and Outdoor Camp - September 27 (Yuma) Join us for camping at Squaw Lake. Enjoy trails and hiking, then cool-off in the canoes on the lake. Plus, no camp-out is complete without a campfire, s’mores, and songs! Girls will work towards earning outdoor and eco-badges. Sleep Out, Junior Girl Scout! - September 27 (Pima) Is your Junior ready to take the next step on her Girl Scout camping journey? Sign 7
her up to spend the night with her Girl Scout sisters under the stars! She will pack her own overnight bag at home, then head on over to the Hacienda for an exciting evening of campfire-building, hot-dog-roasting, s’mores-making, silly-song-singing, and sleepover shenanigans! Girls will pitch a tent and sleep out under the night sky. After breakfast, your girl will try her hand at archery and improve her shot! Girl Scouts Day at the Gardens - September 28 (Pima) Tucson Botanical Gardens invites you to spend the morning honing your naturalist and earning Legacy: Naturalist badges including: Bugs (Brownie/Daisy), Flowers (Junior), Gardener (Junior), Trees (Cadette) and Water (Ambassador).
