ARTS EXPRESSION Flutter Productions First-of-its-Kind All-Ability Arts Evaluation Flutter Productions is pleased to announce the completion of a three-year evaluation, conducted in partnership with the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and Center for Disabilities. The evaluation looked at the impact of arts involving people with disabilities on community members, audience members, volunteers, staff, and the performers with disabilities. The evaluation, which included facilitated conversations with casts and audiences, revealed eight outcomes from all-ability performing arts experiences and opportunities. These included but were not limited to, helping people with disabilities find their voice; changing expectations and perceptions about abilities and differences; creating leadership opportunities; and positive ripple effects in the community, such individuals with disabilities finding employment. The evaluation was made possible in major part by a 2017 Building Humanities Communities Challenge Grant, from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): Exploring the human endeavor. Flutter Productions was one of twenty-nine projects in sixteen states awarded this grant, and the Presents only organization in South Dakota. Variations on Flutter’s grant award was considered an H.O.P.E. NEH milestone. According to NEH, this evaluation “will shape what happens at the NEH with individuals An all-virtual production with disabilities moving forward.” April 9, 2021 All materials relating to this first-of-its-kind evaluation, including Save the date and stay tuned interviews, outcomes and recordings of performances are on record for more details. at the NEH in Washington, DC. Sheryl Finch, Artist of the Year . . . Again! January 2020, Sheryl Finch was crowned the Suzie Cappa Art Center’s Artist of the Year. Three months later, our world completely changed and Suzie Cappa closed their doors to the public. This year, in light of the non-event that was 2020, Suzie Cappa chose to extend Sheryl’s recognition through 2021. “Sheryl is always willing to challenge herself and has learned many new art techniques,” said Carla Julius, Studio Manager for the Suzie Cappa Art Center, in an interview last year. “She is known for her paintings but she is always willing to try something new.” Although Suzie Cappa remains closed to the public, Sheryl’s latest work will be featured on the Suzie Cappa social media pages as well as their new eBay site (see page 5 for more details on how you can buy Suzie Cappa art on eBay!). Congratulations, Sheryl . . . again!
COMMUNITY LIFE Special Olympics Caravan Brings Holiday Cheer Like other organizations, when the pandemic meant that Special Olympics South Dakota had to cancel all of its 2020 events, it pivoted and hosted a “Holiday Caravan” for Special Olympic athletes in 11 communities across South Dakota. Rapid City, in partnership with Black Hills Works, was the Holiday Caravan’s first, and not surprisingly, best- attended stop! Held behind the Learning Institute building, Black Hill Works staff decorated the driving “loop” with beautiful holiday lights for the more than 130 Special Olympians who participated to enjoy while they received gifts from the safety of their cars. Santa and his helpers, including Deputy Ballard and other members of the Pennington County Sheriff’s office, handed out gifts of tumblers, t-shirts and more. The Rapid City Storm is among the largest teams in the state, with over 200 Black Hills Works participants. The Storm also encourages community involvement and inclusion through its participation in Unified Sports. The Unified division allows Special Olympians to compete side-by-side on the field with community volunteers who perform the role of player/coach. The Holiday Caravan provided a unique opportunity for athletes to reconnect with each other, while remaining safe and socially-distanced. Thanks to everyone that helped make this event outstanding! ARTS EXPRESSION Suzie Cappa Artists Brighten the Walls of the Community Health Center For three consecutive years, Black Hills Works has partnered with the Community Health Center of the Black Hills (CHCBH) to bring Suzie Cappa Art Center artwork to Community Health’s patients and employees. The Suzie Cappa Art Center (SCAC) provides a supportive, inspiring environment where talented artists with disabilities create, exhibit, and sell their work to the community. CHCBH has been providing medical and dental care to people in our community since 1992. Many of the people supported by Black Hills Works have received exceptional health care through CHCBH. So, when CHCBH moved into a larger building and had lots of walls to decorate, there was a natural connection. “This has been a great partnership,” said Tim Trithart, CEO of the CHCBH, about his organization’s collaboration with Suzie Cappa artists. “The art is amazing and the artists deserve having their work featured so prominently in a public space.” In addition to its main location, CHCBH will also be adding Suzie Cappa Art Center art to its walls in its new satellite clinic at the OneHeart campus in Rapid City.
