One Hundred Years Ago 1918 During the Autumn Show in March, a sawing (cross cut) contest was included in the log chopping events. It was won by C R Williams and J Stacey of Stirling. The log chopping was for the State Championship and was won by A W Figg who won both the vertical and horizontal events. Mr Schwerdt tossed his sheaf 37 feet to win that event and the public schools displays were a feature of the show, with the Murray Bridge entry outstanding. There were a record number of entries for the Livestock Show in September and it was described as the best all round show held in Adelaide. On the first day machinery, dairy produce, industries and manufactures and horses-in-action were on show, and the displays of draught stock, cattle, sheep and pigs was described as outstanding. Fifty Years Ago 1968 Main arena events included The American Bell Rocket Team, show jumping team selected to represent Australia at the Mexico Olympic Games (RA&HS Councillor, Jack Walsh was elected manager of this team, and of the team chosen to compete in the three-day trials at the Games) and a massed dog obedience clubs display. Other events were a polocrosse match, parade and “gallop” by greyhounds and racing Afghan hounds, parade of racing cars and precision driving, bands, a long kicking championship (football), trotting events, fireworks, and a hovercraft demonstration. An outstanding display of Poll Hereford cattle was a dominant feature of the Beef Cattle section, and for the first time classes for Santa Gertrudis were introduced. There was strong competition from interstate exhibitors in the British Breeds in the Sheep section. The guest speaker at the Official Luncheon was Mr Doug Anthony, the Federal Minister for Primary Industry. Twenty Five Years Ago 1993 WHAT’S HOT 1993 saw Jock Duncan’s first year as President, a position which he held for a total of eleven years. The newly constructed milking dairy was officially opened by the Minister for Primary Industries, the Hon. Terry Groom LLB on 25 August 1993. Pig racing and log rolling were held for the first time in the western entertainment area. New offices were constructed for the Stud Stock section underneath the Heavy Horse Memorial Clubrooms. The Stud Stock section continues to provide secretarial services to 21 stud breed societies and the Agricultural Societies Council of South Australia. During the year, 94 events were held and attended by an estimated 1.85 million patrons. 15
