On December 8, 2020, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, proclaimed a YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH — from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. This year marks the 150th anniversary since Blessed Pope Pius IX declared St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church! This year should be particularly important to all of us because as Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, says in his book Consecration to St. Joseph, “NOW IS THE TIME OF ST. JOSEPH!” We need St Joseph. In some unprecedented ways, the Church finds herself in crisis and confusion, we need the Guardian of the Redeemer to protect and guide the Mystical Body of Christ (the Church) in this difficult time. The very notion of what it means to be “a man” is under attack. We need St. Joseph to stand as a model of the character men should strive to form within themselves. The place of the husband in the family and “fatherhood” itself is in crisis. We need St. Joseph to teach us what it means to be a loving husband and a caring Dad who has time for his wife and family. In truth, NOW IS THE TIME OF ST. JOSEPH! However, while we naturally think of St. Joseph to model what it is to be a faithful and loving husband and father and provider and protector of the family — he remains a model for everyone. In his beautiful Apostolic Exhortation, Guardian of the Redeemer, St. Pope John Paul II wrote: Besides trusting in Joseph’s sure protection, the Church also trusts in his noble examples, which transcends all individual states of life and serves as a model for the entire Christian Community, whatever the condition and duties of its members may be. In other words, not just men, but all the faithful: men, women, young people and children can find in St. Joseph a real model and example to follow. Some of St. Joseph’s titles tell us he is: the Patron for a Happy death, the Model of Workmen, the Guardian of Virgins. St. Joseph also is the TERROR OF DEMONS! In a time when the devil is wrecking havoc simply by convincing so many to no longer believe in him, his power and his evil, St. Joseph stands as our special protector against the devil and the powers of evil! NOW IS THE TIME OF ST. JOSEPH. During the year, here in the parish, we will run some programs and do some things to help us come to know and love St. Joseph more and to put him in the fore of our spiritual life and growth. For today, I want to thank our Father Joe for making available to us Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Year of St. Joseph, copies of which can be found on the kneeler at the altar of St. Joseph. Pray that prayer, especially on Wednesdays (the day dedicated to St. Joseph) and the 19th of each month throughout the year. Visit his altar and ask for his interces- sion. Spread devotion to him. Each Wednesday, after the Prayers to St. Michael, we will say the Prayer to St. Joseph at the end of every Mass. We ask St. Joseph to protect our parish; to support young couples as they pre- pare for marriage; to be a continual source of strength to all the men in our parish and to be for all of us a “terror of demons” that we must fight every day. St. Joseph, pray for us! God bless you!
