BRAD LARKIN Brad is a retired software engineer from Texas and DNA Project Leader since 2005. In addition to his Larkin surname project, he has founded several genetic genealogy initiatives such as Surname DNA Journal and GeneticHomeland.com. He maintains some of the most comprehensive Y and MtDNA phylogenetic trees on the Internet. Brad is also recognized from his instructional videos on YouTube explaining cheek swab DNA test procedures. In addition to being a citizen scientist, Brad uses his 'Ancestral Parish Sampling' approach to recruit dozens of new DNA participants from Ireland. His Irish Mapping DNA Project combines geographical origin information with maps and high-resolution Y-DNA SNP markers for all surnames. JAMES BARRY Jim has been an amateur genealogist for more than 40 years. He is a former US government executive and professor of politics at George Mason University and the University of Maryland. In 2013, he founded the Barry DNA Project at Family Tree DNA to explore the genetic evolution of this important Cork family. In 2015, he joined forces with Roger DuBarry, and forensic anthropologist René Gapert, to establish the Earls of Barrymore DNA Project, which included forensic examination and genetic testing of remains in the Barrymore mausoleum at Castlelyons, constructed for James Barry, 4th Earl of Barrymore; one of the first efforts to conduct genetic testing of ancestral remains for comparison with contemporary findings from genetic genealogy. Jim’s Barry ancestors lived in Carrigcluhir, Barryroe parish, West Cork and his great grandfather immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA in the famine years. Jim lives in Reston, Virginia with his wife Victoria Robinson.
MICHAEL COLLINS Michael is a US-based practising lawyer of 42 years standing who descends from the Collins family who lived on the Donovan Farm in Derrinasafa, Dunmanway Parish during the Great Hunger. Over 30 years of research, Michael found the Collins and many related West Cork families emigrated to Ontario, Canada. These famine refugees settled closely together, primarily in Middlesex, Elgin and Huron, counties. Michael believes they followed an agreed but undocumented plan of emigration. He became involved with the Collins West Cork DNA Project 5 years ago. Having proven an unbroken line of male Collins stretching from the mid-1700's to the present, he was granted scholarships by the Project which assisted his advanced DNA testing with FTDNA. Despite several research trips to Canada and Ireland from his home in California, Michael remains short of his ultimate goal: to connect with any West Cork descendants of his ancestors or with pre- emigration knowledge of them. Michael is presently writing a book detailing his searches, the highs and lows of the process, and the wildly entertaining stories he has been accumulating. FIONA FORDE “THE IRISH FAMILY DETECTIVE” Fiona is a graduate of University College Cork in Genealogy Studies and Arts (History). Fiona’s final dissertation was based on her West Cork maternal ancestors; the Donovan’s of Derrylahan, Dunmanway and was published in The Irish Genealogist in 2018. Fiona is the owner of irishfamilydetective.ie which offers advice and consultation to those researching their Irish ancestors. 2020 is the centenary of one of the bloodiest years of the Irish War of Independence and Fiona will be delivering a number of lectures in connection with the Blackpool ambush, May 1920. Fiona has also published a number of articles in Irish Roots.
MARK GRACE “THE GENEAL GEOLOGIST” Mark is an amateur genealogist who has been researching his family tree for more than 40 years, more recently using DNA techniques to identify his direct paternal lineage (from a C19th church foundling) and to verify his wider family, solving many family mysteries in the process. He has numerous DNA projects on the go, having reviewed thousands of matches. Since retiring to Ireland in 2015, Mark has been researching his wife’s West Cork ancestry in depth, using atDNA to help extend her family tree beyond the start of Irish church records. He is a volunteer Director at the Clonakilty Chamber of Commerce and runs Ballynoe House (luxury self-catering – ballynoehouse.ie) in Ardfield, just outside of Clonakilty. DR. PENNY WALTERS Penny is a Psychology and Business Studies University lecturer. Adoptee Penny found 91% Irish heritage and collaborative matches through DNA testing, leading to many visits to Ireland, combined with lecturing about diaspora, homelands, cultural appropriation, and mixing DNA results with a paper trail. A mix of DNA matches and a thorough paper trail showed that Penny’s ancestors came from Drimoleague, in the south west of Cork, and Sneem in County Kerry. DNA testing has also revealed fascinating insights into her mixed race children's heritages, which have inspired lectures and articles about ethnicity and identity, and the slave trade. Penny lectures internationally, and writes articles about a variety of genealogy topics. Penny is the author of 'Ethical Dilemmas in Genealogy,' and ‘The Psychology of Searching.’
