Baltic Forum for Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Manure Management – Baltic BatMan Baltic BatMan is a Flagship project in the Action Plan of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region adopted by member states in 2009. The project is in contract negotiation phase to be financed by the European Union's Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region - Action Plan • To make the Baltic Sea Region – AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE PLACE – A PROSPEROUS PLACE • Forum for Inventive and sustainable Manure processing – ACCESSIBLE AND ATTRACTIVE – SAFE AND SECURE
Manure challenges • Large animal units and regionally intensive animal production – 1320 IPPC regulated farms in Baltic region (EU MS) – High amount of nutrients to be distributed • Disposal may create environmental loading – Logistic challenges • Transportation of liquid manure ineffective • Economy of scale – large animal units may make processing of manure economically attractive • Concentration of nutrients (water removal) • Transportation over longer distances feasible • Separation of nutrient fractions (N, P) • Recirculation of P – Production of renewable energy

Nutrient losses differ Diffuse sources • Nitrate Directive • Water Frame Directive Point sources • IPPC Integrated Pollution & Prevention Control Directive • EIA directive • Waste Water Directive Nitrogen Phosphorous
Present EU regulation • Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control: IPPC Directive – Emission control for large production units (> 250 LU) • Environmental Impact Assessment Directive • Single Farm Payment Scheme – – Good Agricultural Practice – Cross Compliance • Water Frame Directive & Nitrate Directive – reduce pollution in water catchments
Manure opportunities • Processing leads to more effective use of manure – Develop fertiliser products • Solid pills / pellets • Liquid ’designer’ fertilisers • Many partial solutions are under way – Separation – Aerobic treatments – Anaerobic digestion (biogas) – Drying, incineration, – Acidification, ozonization – Biological treatments – Others • Emergent technologies in the lab • Business opportunities to be developed Photos: Sari Luostarinen ja Perttu Virkajärvi, MTT
Baltic BatMan Project • Baltic BatMan is a Flagship project in the Action Plan of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region adopted by member states in 2009. • The project is in contract negotiation phase to be financed by the European Union's Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. Project leader: Agrifood Research, Finland (MTT). Total budget: 3.7 million € 18 partners in total Duration 2010 - 2013
Baltic Batman Objectives “Turning manure into business opportunities” – To establish a manure knowledge forum by transnational R&D efforts, communication and business innovation – To evaluate the existing systems and technologies for animal housing and manure processing in the Baltic Sea Region – To evaluate the existing norms for manure in relation to housing and technologies to reach sustainable nutrient cycles, with a special emphasis on phosphorus – To perform sustainability analysis of new technologies – To identify and analyse the commercial potentials of manure technologies, e.g. for energy purposes – To evaluate the incentive structure and national interpretations of EU directives influencing the development of inventive manure processing technologies – To stimulate business innovation for manure technologies and recommend specific investments
Baltic BatMan Work Packages WP 1. Project management: MTT (FI) – Will ensure strategic, operational and financial management of the project WP 2. Communication: ABP/CBMI (DK) – Will facilitate communication between all BATMAN actors internally and externally. WP 3. Innovative technology for animal feeding and housing, processing, storage and spreading of manure JTI, (SE) – Will identify innovative technologies for handling and processing manure in an environmentally-friendly way on big farms in the BSR. WP 4. Standardisation of manure types with special emphasis on phosphorus challenge: JKI, (DE) – Will describe different manure types and their value as a fertiliser and recommend new standards for manure types. Special emphasis will be put on phosphorus. WP 5. Assessing sustainability of manure technology chains: Univ. S. Denmark (DK) – Will assess the environmental consequences of different manure management technology chains of relevance for the Baltic Sea Regions WP 6. Energy potentials of Manure: MTT (FI) – Will evaluate the energy potentials of different manure with focus on biogas technology WP 7. Business Innovation: ABP/CBMI (DK) – Business innovation will in cooperation with EEN members in the BSR region ensure the commercial viability of innovative companies and research outputs from the WP 3-6.

What is a Forum? Wictionary: forum (plural forums or fora) 1. A place for discussion. 2. A gathering for the purpose of discussion. 3. A form of discussion involving a panel of presenters and often participation by members of the audience. 4. An Internet message board where users can post messages regarding one or more topics of discussion. Usage notes • The English plural forums is preferred to the Latin plural fora in normal English usage.
Optimal Forum? The aim of the Workshop is to help define objectives and measures for the Forum for Inventive and Sustainable Manure processing: – How to bring together technology producers, farmers and policy makers to foster sustainable and innovative manure management as well as nutrient re-circulation in agriculture? – How to coordinate and link and amplify the dissemination and information exchange action of the numerous actors and projects?
Answers to plenum • What do we want to achieve by autumn 20110 within our Flagship project? • Possible conclusions concerning the Flagship projects from the workshops • Specific issues that have been identified concerning flagships, cooperation and financing. Need for new flagship projects?
Workshop discussion Optimal Knowledge Forum’: What is it, how can it be established, coordinated and executed between the many stakeholders. Discussion should cover at least the following stakeholder groups: • farmers • technology producers/business • researchers • administration/policy level • Others (consumers, associations…)
