fficer Reports From the Seneschal: This missive is bitter sweet for me to write. As everyone should be aware, I will be stepping down as Seneschal next month. So, the month of February will be a busy one as I transition the office over to my Deputy, Lady Meg Sterling. I have no words to adequately express my love for our Shire. I have experienced the most positive and memorable moments as your Seneschal. I am proud and humbled by the unconditional support shown to me during my tenure. Moving forward, I am looking forward to becoming our new Hospitaler. I have great hope for the opportunity to serve the Shire in this new capacity. This is an office that has been vacant for a little while and I feel my experience as Seneschal gives me a unique perspective in fulfilling the duties and obligations of this office. My hope is to ensure that we continue to grow and enjoy each other’s accomplishments along our journey together. With our recent interest and growth my hope is to encourage and assist members that have recently relocated into the Shire as well as those that are returning or are completely new to the SCA. King’s Round Table will be held virtually, later this month (see the flyer on page 23). This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in a local office to attend the necessary warranting class prior to taking office. However, it is also a great way to learn more about how the SCA functions in general. In Honoured Service, Calena di Nero Rosa From the Deputy Seneschal: I am beyond honored to be assuming the role of your Seneschal. There is much for me to learn in the coming days of transition, and I’ll be attending the Seneschal Warranting class at the upcoming February Round Table. Plans are still in the works for our 2021 event to celebrate our 30th year as an established group in Ansteorra. We are slated to keep our original event date of September 24-26, which puts us on the weekend before the rescheduled Gulf Wars in October. This isn’t what was hoped, but I’m sure we can make it successful despite possible wrenches in the works. Since I’ll be retaining the position of Thrown Weapons Marshal, I’ll be working towards getting a deputy or two authorized as soon as possible. As this is my first time holding the office of Seneschal, I humbly request patience and understanding while I learn the ropes and settle into the new role. I trust in the guidance of the populace and my predecessor, and I am excited about the prosperity and revitalization to come when we can safely resume activities. Yours in Service, Meg Sterling 6
fficer Reports (continued) From the Minister of Arts & Sciences: I am excited to report that in January we had our very first Virtual A&S gatherings! These included classes on nålbinding, horse barding, and an overview of Ansteorra’s Achievement guidelines, respectively, taught by myself, HL Calena di Nero Rosa, and Master Tostig Logiosophia and HL Jessimond of Emerickeskepe. In February we will have a class on the 7th -- Carving Tools with Lord Gird Truthsayer and on the 21st -- Beginning Recorder with Mistress Delphina De Champeaux. Both classes will begin at 4pm. Please see our Facebook Group for the event vellum and Zoom link. Yours in Service, Stormig av Sandkrok From the Chronicler: Oh, how delighted I am by the wonderful submissions we are receiving in honour of our Pearl Anniversary Celebration! I actually had the luxury of holding back two pieces for inclusion in next month’s issue! I hope everyone is enjoying these tantalizing tidbits as much as I am. I would like to continue to encourage everyone reading this missive to please look through old photographs from past events, classes, or demos to possibly find ones to submit for inclusion in future issues of The Thorny Truth. Alternately, perhaps write a few words about when you first came to Rosenfeld, or a memory of one of your favorite local events. Ideally, I will continue to include items as part of our Pearl Anniversary Celebration throughout the remainder of the year or until we simply run out of them. For those that might not yet be aware, Kingdom newsletters, such as The Black Star, can now be accessed without having a paid membership via www.sca.org . At the top righthand side of the page there is a link to “newsletters”. From there simply select Ansteorra and then the individual issue. There are about a year or so of back issues available. In Honoured Service, Jessimond of Emerickeskepe 7
fficer Reports (continued) From the Herald: If anyone is interested in submitting personal heraldry, including your name or device/ arms, please know that I will be happy to assist you in any way that I can. There is no requirement for you to register a name and/or device, but all are strongly encouraged to do so. I’m also available for consultation regarding elements for your Achievement of Arms if you are considering registering yours or are needing to make changes or additions to one you have already registered. There is a special project going on at this very moment wherein the SCA College of Arms is hosting a Virtual Heralds Point through Sunday, February 14, 2021. During this project, submitters will be able to pay electronically using PayPal! Also, using this method saves you $1 per submission. Please see the full-page flyer on page 30 for more information! I continue to attend Ansteorra’s monthly OSCAR Commentary Sessions as well as monitoring notifications from the SCA College of Arms. We currently have several submissions at the society level at this time. Likewise, we are waiting to hear from Sable Crane if our azure squirrel submission has officially been accepted and registered as the sinister supporter of our Shire Achievement. Lastly, I am tickled to announce that one of my own submissions, a new personal badge, was recently registered as recorded on the November 2020 Letter of Acceptances and Returns (LOAR): (Fieldless) Within and conjoined to a joscelyn wreathed sable and argent with five bells Or an edelweiss proper. In Humble Service, Jessimond of Emerickeskepe 8

Upon Rosenfeld’s 30th Anniversary Hail, and well met, Friends and Neighbors! What a joy to be asked to say a few words about the Shire of Rosenfeld for the Shire’s 30th anniversary! From back in the day, 1990-ish, wonderful talented and dedicated people came together and established the group that today is well known for one of Ansteorra’s annual signature events, Three Kings, a large event with something for everyone. Fighting styles, A&S, classes, Bardic, fire circle, largess, fellowship! Rosenfeld also hosts a variety of Kingdom events such as Coronations, Rapier Academy, Kingdom Arts and Sciences, all with efficient hard workers. Rosenfeld is the home of fine warriors, talented artisans, dancers, famed heralds, leader servants, a grand newsletter, and much more. We feel a kinship to many of the people of Rosenfeld. Of several specific events we remember in Rosenfeld are the Coronation of TM Aaron & Vanessa stewarded by HL Carletta in a gloriously decorated hall with a feast led by Ms Rhiannon. A rapier event at Hawkins when HM Conal was reigning with HM Miguel. A very cold Three Kings during the reign of TM Drake and Sibri, endeared memories of keeping company all day with HE Brianna who portrayed Queen Elanor (and her aide, Sir Emrys) to HE Simonn’s role as Henry II, bantering period conversations via correspondence and war tactics between Henry and Elanor for months in advance of the event. This darling couple long loved by many SCA’ers have both gone on to their Everlasting Reward and are sorely missed. I believe one of the earliest Seneschals of Rosenfeld was Lady Fridhur- now Mistress Livia- whose dedicated work included obtaining shire recognition. Another Seneschal, if memory serves, was good HL Richard Fairbourne who also later served as Kingdom Seneschal. Among the populace organizers were beloved Ms Dyan & HL Grimver, causing event structures and décor to transfix our imaginations. Our precious Ms Dyan drifted up to her Eternal Kingdom this past summer, and our terrestrial plane here is not the same without her. After a time, from Stargate moved Their Graces Julia & Patrick Michael and their amazing little children who became grown leadership in current years. Highest regard for this family! Ms Charla and I were personally very pleased to be a part of hosting an outdoor feast in Rosenfeld for the first Coronation of TM Sven & Antigone, with each portion of feast announced by HE Tostig. A large portion of Bordermarch had come with Tessa (& Simonn) as feast staff, and Rosenfeld jumped right in on sight to assist and present the courses. 11
The group is made of highly hospitable people who pitch in together to put on fabulous events. It is no easy task for a small group to host and organize large events of such stature. For these and many other reasons, we are so pleased to congratulate Rosenfeld upon your 30th Anniversary! Here’s to at least 30 more! Congratulations! Until we have the pleasure to once again be in your company, we remain with sincerest regards, your friends and neighbors, Simonn & Tessa, Bordermarch Photo - Mistress Barbara Fleig 12
Pearl Anniversary By Tobias and Jessimond of Emerickeskepe A String of Events As part of the Rosenfeld Pearl Celebration, this regular featured article will run monthly tidbits about various events Rosenfeld has hosted since its inception… History of Three Kings - The First Six Years Our on-going quest is providing the most wonderful adventure in discovering details of the history of our new home, our beloved Rosenfeld. In adding to our String of Events, we decided to next see what we could learn about the most famous (infamous?) of Rosenfeld’s events ~ Three Kings. Always held in the fall, these amazing melee events traditionally included complex historical scenarios that were originally created by Master Richard Fairbourne who was the Event Steward and Scenario Coordinator for the first six years! Afterwards, upon moving away from Rosenfeld, he continued to assist with scenario coordination for several more years. Let us take a closer look at what we have uncovered thus far about those early years… 1995 – The FIRST Battle of Three Kings Originally listed in the Kingdom Calendar of June 1995 simply as “Harvest Fest”, by July the name was changed to “Battle of Three Kings”. This first rendition was held on October 17-19, 1995. Records imply that the theme that very first year was based on William the Conqueror seizing and uniting Britain in 1066. 1996 – Crusade of Three Kings After the first Three Kings had been so successful and FUN it was immediately decided to do it again the very next year. This time around the event was called Crusade of Three Kings and was held the weekend of November 1-3, 1996. The theme was based on Pope Gregory VIII calling for the Third Crusade with the goal of recapturing Jerusalem for Christendom. The key historical figures represented were King Richard of England (called Lionheart), Philip Augustus (Philip II of France), and Frederick Barbarossa, (Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor). The day’s battle scenarios included the Siege of Jerusalem (1187) and the Siege of Acre (Aug 1189 - Jul 1191). 13
The latter representing the first significant counterattack by King Guy of Jerusalem against Saladin, leader of the Muslims, Sultan of Syria and Egypt. 1997 - 1 King and All of Those Pretenders… Records show that 185 people attended the third Three Kings which was held the first weekend of November 1997 at the Canton Trade Days site. It is unclear if this was an official title or simply a coin of phrase used by during the traditional pre-event banter calling for support and aide of the Principals. Nevertheless, the theme of this event appears to have been the War of the Roses, honouring the lengthy fight for power be- tween the House of Lancaster and House of York between 1455 to 1487. Sir Galen of Bristol was originally slated to be Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, called the Kingmaker. However, Sir Galen handed the "gules, a saltire argent" banner of Warwick off to Sir Gunthar Jonsson due to obligations elsewhere in the Kingdom that same weekend. Don Miguel portrayed the Earl of Chester while “Treschen, Talen, Jason McPherson, and Wilhelm” played other key roles. Treschen may have portrayed the role of Queen Marguerite, but this is yet unconfirmed. Apparently, this event was particularly inspiring for one young Rosenfelder who upon returning to school the Monday following the event did insist on attending dressed as "Edward of Lancaster, King of All England” and proclaiming to her teacher that she “had been crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of Queen Marguerite." 1998 - Battle of Three Kings - Scottish War of Independence On the weekend of November 13-15, 1998, at the Canton Trade Days site, bagpipes and drums did play when the first battles began! Key players were Robert the Bruce (His Majesty Sir Barn Silveraxe) and William Wallace (Airaklee Wolf) in their historical struggle against the King of England, Edward I, known as Longshanks (Sir Karl der Ganger), and his son, Prince Edward (Sir Dieterich). Another historical character portrayed that day was Sir James Douglas AKA Good Sir James (Sir Galen of Bristol). The recreated historic battles from the beginning of the war included Stirling Bridge (11 September 1297), Falkirk (22 July 1298), and Bannockburn (23 and 24 June 1314) with melees, combat archery, and siege engines! Other activities included thrown weapons, archery, and an Arts & Science competition. Site fee was a modest $6 with an additional fee of $5 for feast. The delicacies of the feast included Scotch Eggs with bread and butter, savory beef and vegetable stew, individual meat pies (pork sausage, apples, raisins, nuts), with traditional Scottish shortbread for dessert. 1999 - Battle of Three Kings – Legend of King Arthur With over 100 fighters participating, including 10-12 archers, November 10-12, 1999 saw the Legend of King Arthur come to life in Rosenfeld! The Liondragon Guard of Mooneschadowe, under the banner of King Stephen (Centurion Tuhtahl), defeated the Arthurian Company and the armies of Empress Matilda (Duchess Willow de Wisp) in a head-to-head challenge. 14
2000 Three Kings – The Hundred Years War Held the weekend of 11 November 2000 this sixth year of Three Kings was as equally epic as the war it portrayed! Here is the huge list of characters on the field that day, in no particular order. This might not even be complete, but tis merely what we can confirm from our sources: Edward III King of England (Master Richard Fairbourne) Queen Catharine (Duchess Larissa), King Henry V (Sir Duncan), the Black Prince (King Timotheous) The English's herald (Lord Timothy of Glastonbury) Queen of France, Isabeau of Bavaria (Her Majesty Allyson) France's Duke of Orleans (Duke Jean Richard) Mad King Charles VI (Ld. Armand Dragonetti) King Charles VII (Sir Asoph) King John II (Herr Erasmus Totengrabber) Duke of Exeter (Earl Alaric Drake) Duke of Somerset (Baron Llywelyn Gruffydd) Duke of York (Morgan Buchanan) Queen of England, Phillipa of Hainault (Lady Muriela de Clare) King Richard II (Baron Ulsted the Unsteady) Sir John Talbot (Sir Alexis) This year included equestrians and over 50 archers signed up ahead of time! During court that evening Herr Erasmus Totengraber joined the ranks of the Order of the Centurions of the Sable Star. Please note, the information contained herein is simply a compilation of notes gleaned from reputable sources such as Ansteorra’s Wiki History, the archived records of the Ansteorra List, and Armand's Photo Album on the Barony of Elfsea website as well as available back issues of The Thorny Truth and The Black Star. Cobbled together in this manner, tis certain there will be gaps in the information presented. If anyone with firsthand knowledge, photos, or other records of these events would care to step forward and share them, we would most humbly and gratefully add that information to our Shire’s Historical Record. Thank you, Master Richard Fairbourne, for sharing your personal remembrances of these earlyThree Kings! Théorie de Musique partie quatre Delphina de Champeaux ledwallace9@gmail.com 5th Line So far, we have learned the different notes (sound) and rests (silences), learned about a music staff 4th Space where we write the notes and rests and talked about pitches on the treble (or higher) clef. 4th Line Remember to always count the lines of a staff 3rd Space from the bottom to the top and we will name them that way too. This time we will focus on the bass 3rdLine clef, which is used to show the lower pitches. The 2nd Space lines are named G, B, D, F, A and the spaces are A, C, E, G. It often helps to think of the names of 2nd Line the lines as Good Boys Do Fine Always and the 1st Space spaces could be All Cars Eat Gas. 1st Line Don’t worry… you usually only read one or the other clef. The harpsichord would be one exception or if you want to change back and forth between the bass recorder and the other sizes. Here are some bass clef notes you can practice naming if you like. 21
Sonnets are the signature staple of the poetic world. They've been around since the 13th century when they were ostensibly created by Giacomo da Lentini, though they have been changed and adapted in style through- out the centuries. I thought I understood what sonnets were until I really started learning about them and realized that they are far more than their meter and rhyme. At their most basic, sonnets strive to juxtapose two things against each other, or propose an argument and provide a resolution. What those things are can be as varied as the number of poets writing sonnets. But whatever the things are, they are contrastive to each other in one form or another. Sonnets are exclusive in their length, being 14 lines long regardless of form. They contain somewhere in that length what the Italians would call a volta - that is - the juxtaposition point that contrasts the two central themes or provides the resolution. They are, incidentally, almost exclusively written in iambic pentameter. Edmund Spenser, a poet of the 16th century, was fond of creating his own poetic forms from Spenserian Verse to this sonnet form which is an adaptation of the stanza pattern from his signature The Faerie Queene. That pattern is a-b-a-b/b-c-b-c/c-d-c-d/e-e, if you look closely that’s three interwoven quatrains followed by a couplet. Just as the quatrains are interwoven, they traditionally consist of three interwoven ideas. The volta is at the couplet, however, Spenser often used the word “but” or “yet” at Line 9 (where the volta appears in the Italian Sonnet), which forms an infamous fake-out to the reader (but wait … there’s more!) Eglantine O soft sweet bloom of blossoms pink and white, Your apple scented petals sing of spring Where sparrows roost and chickadees take flight, The gloriously lauded Eglantine! Your bountiful branches a vast wellspring Of blossomed clusters, scented oh so fine; And from your hips each autumn do you bring A most deliciously flavored sweet wine. But oft you are thought as a weed maligned That plough and poison both are wrought to kill, Choking out pastures, crops, and wildlife. Oh Eglantine! No place for you but still — You are like Truth — oft sought to be suppressed, Yet from one seed you’re reborn with excess! 22
Eglantine ~ Rosa rubiginosa Family: Rosaceae Other Scientific Names: Rosa eglanteria Other Common Names: eglantine, sweetbrier, sweet briar, briar rose Middle English eglentin, from Old French eglantine, diminutive of aiglent, from Vulgar Latin aculentum, from neuter of aculentus, spiny, from Latin aculeus, spine, from acus, needle. Briar is from the Old English brer or braert and is a name for thorny shrubs. Eglantine has been so loved through the centuries that poets continue to write of it today just as Guillaume de Machaut, Geoffrey Chaucer, and William Shakespeare once did. There is no real mystery as to why Eglantine was so loved for this wild, rambling rose blooms in late summer and is known for its hooked prickles (thorns), fragrant leaves, pink flowers, and scarlet-red hips. Often described as a vigorous shrub with arching stems, it can easily grow six to nine feet tall, but has been known to reach up to fifteen feet high! The flowers may be solitary or in panicles of 2-3, or even up to 7 flowers, with each being 2-4 cm wide. The cupped blossoms have five pale pink petals with bright yellow stamens. When wet or crushed, its leaves have a sweet, apple-like fragrance much like its flowers. Like many wild roses, Eglantine spreads by suckering - the ability of a plant to send up shoots from its roots creating entire new plants. Suckering is why it makes an ideal hedge plant, too. Early each spring new plants emerge from the roots and as they grow into fully mature plants, they make the hedge denser and more impenetrable. Young leaves and shoots maybe eaten by livestock, or nibbled upon by passing deer and rabbit, but mature plants are protected by their numerous prickles. When left unchecked, an eglantine will become a massive briar patch of fragrant leaves with pretty summer blossoms and bright red hips (fruit) in the fall. 23
Pollinators love this plant, as do beekeepers, for the flowers produce plenty of pollen. The hips contain more than ten times the vitamin C of lemons and oranges. Not only can the fruits themselves can be eaten, but the tender young shoots can be candied. Like all roses, eglantine petals and/or hips can be used in making tea, wines, sauces, syrups, and jellies. Understandably, many English Colonists chose to bring this hearty rose with them to plant along their garden walls. Equally unsurprisingly, the eager and opportunistic eglantine did not hesitate to escape captivity and soon became naturalized. Because it is native to Europe, when grown in more temperate regions of the world it has a tendency to become quite invasive. In the last couple of centuries, it has spread across North America, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. For this reason, in some regions, eglantine may no longer be planted or propagated, and all trade in its seeds, cuttings or other propagative material is prohibited. Always check on-line, or with your state or county agricultural agencies, prior to introducing non-native plants to your garden. In areas where it is not prohibited, eglantine makes a lovely ornamental when grown in a sunny location along a sturdy fence or allowed to become a hedge. Taking advantage of its ability to sucker, eglantine is easy to propagate from soft wood cuttings in the spring. In late summer, after it is finished blooming, you can also propagate by layering. When grown in the hedgerow, eglantine does not require pruning beyond removing dead or dying canes. It is recommended that you prune before its leaves appear, but if you have difficulty telling dead branches from live it may be best to wait until the leaves begin to emerge to know which branches need be removed. As with all roses, it is also recommended that dead leaves, branches, or other brush be removed from underneath to prevent harboring insects or diseases, such as the dreaded blackspot. When grown on a fence, trellis, or arbor it is best to actively removing suckers and prune vigorously each spring to prevent eglantine from taking over the garden. Here comes the Sun ~ Celebrating St. Brigid In the SCA my persona is that of a half Norse woman living in the Danelaw of 10th century England. In reality I am 70% British and Irish as well as a convert to Catholicism who chose St. Brigid as her saint. I decided that for my article this month that I would examine the foods traditionally served on St Brigid’s feast day which coincides with Imbolc. Imbolc is the ancient Irish first day of spring as it falls halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox. . Now, I knew that St Brigid is in- extricably linked with the Irish goddess Brid and that finding something that was one and not the other was going to be impossible. So, I did what any good girl of Irish and Catholic heritage would do and adopted the trappings of the goddess of spring and life into the celebratory dish for my saint day. The foods and flowers associated with Brid (pronounced “breed” or “breej”) are those that bring the sun to mind---Dandelion flowers, chamomile, honey, egg yolks, and butter among them. Many of the foods served to celebrate St. Brigid therefore revolves around the same color theme. I decided to go with something simple-- a custard. The custard recipe I found calls it “milkmete” and is from 1450. It is a very simple recipe, relying on a bit of flour to thicken the custard up to a nice pudding consistency. But, this wee Irish girl is gluten intolerant so adjustments had to be made. In addition, I wanted to incorporate chamomile into my custard. Having read enough medieval “recipes” to realize that they are more guidelines than rules I got creative. The original recipe reads: Milkemete. Take faire mylke and floure, and draue hem thorgh a streynour, and sette hem ouer the fire, and lete hem boyle awhile; And then take hem vppe, and lete hem kele awhile/ And then take rawe yolkes of eyren and drawe hem thorgh a streynour, and caste thereto a litull salt, And set it ouer the fire til hit be som-what thik, And lete hit not fully boyle, and stere it right well euermore. And put it in a dissh al abrode, And serue it forth fore a gode potage in one maner; And then take Sugur a good quantite, And caste there- to, and serue it forth. I then followed the modern recipe provided by the person known as “SannieB” on the blog. Except that I started tweaking the recipe from the get go. The first thing was that I wanted to infuse the milk with chamomile so I heated the milk to steaming, removed it from the fire, dropped in a Bigelow Cozy Chamomile tea bag, popped on a lid, and went off to crochet for a while. When the milk was sufficiently cooled I added the Almond Flour I had substituted for the Wheat Flour, whisked it thoroughly, and started heating to a boil as instructed. Everything really went along swimmingly until I got to the “thicken” portion of the process. 25
Photos by Stormig av Sandkrok I returned my pot to the stove, added the two beaten egg yolks, and began stirring. And stirring. For 20 minutes. It was at that point that I decided that Almond Flour just does not thicken. If it hadn’t been for being out of Oat Flour, which could have theoretically been period, I would have grabbed some, but, alas! So I pulled out my trusty bag of Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1:1 Baking Flour (aka BRM). Something I’ve noted about BRM is that it expands. Rapidly. A lot. I added a tablespoon of BRM, whisked it well, and stirred. That worked well so I added a second tablespoon. And that did the trick. Within just a couple minutes I had a piping hot pot full of beautiful, thick, aromatic custard! And look at that color! St. Brigid would be thrilled! Despite the lovely aroma this custard is terribly bland. SannieB recommends up to 5 tablespoons of sugar. I used honey. It’s quite tasty with honey, but nothing at all like our modern puddings. It’s a bit lumpier (a linen sieve could fix that problem) and we tend to put vanilla in almost all of our sweets. However, I wanted to create something that my persona might have eaten (but still keep within my dietary restrictions). Immediately after preparing it I had a bowl of this custard hot with plenty of honey drizzled over the top. The next day I had it cold with peach preserves-- it was delicious! 26

Northkeep’s (Virtual) Winterkingdom - January 23 Lady Ysabel de Picard taught an Introduction to the Plucked Psaltery (lap harp). According to the class description, the psaltery is a “simple musical instrument that was very popular in a variety of forms during the Middle Ages.” As part of the class, Lady Ysabel included a little historical background about the psaltery as well as practi- cal tips on how to create historical music on this very accessible instrument. Lady Stormig av Sandkrok presented a class on Nålbinding: How to Make a Hat. For this project Stormig taught her class the Korgen stitch (Finnish 1+2) from a round start with a top-down configuration. She also gave instruction on two methods of joining yarn; one method for wool, the other for non-felting fibers. Several members of Rosenfeld also participated in this fantastic event by attending classes throughout the day. A few of the classes were recorded and are available at the Barony of Northkeep's Winterkingdom YouTube channel. Midyear (Virtual) Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium - January 23 Master Tostig Logiosophia presented his work on Testing the Armory Conflict Rules in SENA. The Camp Kitchen By Atli Karlsson Chicken & Mushroom with Wild Rice INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. boneless chicken Garlic Seasoning 1 lb. mushrooms (fresh) 12 oz water 12 oz frozen onions and peppers 32 oz chicken broth 1 stick butter 21 oz wild rice blend Cooking oil 22 oz Cream of Mushroom Soup (condensed) Kosher Salt For topping: Fresh ground pepper Parsley Flakes Italian Seasoning Feta or Parmesan cheese EQUIPMENT 12-inch Cast Iron Dutch Oven Small cast iron saucepan Charcoal briquets (about 50 pieces) Charcoal Chimney Starter (optional) A collapsible DIRECTIONS charcoal chimney Begin by heating 30 coals in your chimney as starter is perfect you gather your ingredients and supplies. for camping! While preheating the Dutch Oven with 20 coals on top and 10 on bottom, cube your 2 lbs. of chicken and coat with cooking oil, salt, and pepper. (Photo One) Once the Dutch oven has preheated, add in your chicken and cover. While the chicken begins cooking, melt the butter. I find that melting the butter on top of the oven in a smaller cast iron saucepan works well. (Photo Two) Photo One 28
When the butter has fully melted, stir the butter and mushrooms into the chicken and cover for another 5 minutes. Next add the two teaspoons of Italian seasoning and the two tablespoons of garlic seasoning, stir well, and cover for another 5 minutes. (Photo Three) Add in your frozen vegetables, stir well, and cover. At this point you will want to get 20 more charcoal pieces going in your chimney. (Photo Four) Photo Two After about five minutes add in your water, chicken broth, rice, and cream of mushroom soup. Stir well and cover. Add 15 heated coals to the bottom and 5 to the top of the Dutch oven. Continue to cook for about 30 minutes, turning your top and bottom 90 degrees in opposite directions every 10 minutes. (Photo Five) After the 30-minute mark, check to make sure your rice is fully cooked. If not, cook for another 15 minutes. Once the rice and chicken are fully cooked, serve topped with feta or parmesan cheese and parsley flakes. (Photo Six) Photo Three Photo Five Photo Four Photos by Lord Atli Karlsson Photo Six 29
Virtual Heralds Point Have you been meaning to get your name, device, or badge registered for ages, but for one reason or another just have not managed to do so? To the Shire of Rosenfeld, greetings! • Did you know that Ansteorra has its very own Wiki with over 800 articles? (Have you ever visited Wikipedia? Well, it's like that, but just for Ansteorra!) • Did you know that YOU can have your very own page on the Wiki? Nearly 300 Ansteorrans already do! (Visit http://historian.ansteorra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Category:People to see just who has.) • Did you know I would positively love the opportunity to assist you in either building a page on your own, or building one for you, complete with pictures, history, accomplishments, photos... whatever you want to share? So much of the SCA is a shared, communal experience, but so much of our history is lost, because it is not recorded. There are so many stories to tell - and the Ansteorran Wiki is a beautiful place to share them and preserve them. Rosenfeld has a page on the wiki -- but only a tiny smidge of information about its rich history. (http://historian.ansteorra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Rosenfeld) Won't you share YOUR stories of Rosenfeld's history and events - large and small - with the rest of the Kingdom? Contributing content to the wiki is much, much easier than you think. If you can type an email, you can contribute to the wiki. Content you could share can be as varied as snippets of information about those living or passed who have inspired you, "No (bleep), there I was!" stories, photographs, songs, poems... nearly anything you can imagine! Having your own page built on the wiki is as easy as filling out an online form (http://historian.ansteorra.org/submission.php ) and attaching a few photos (though please take a moment to ensure they are less than 1 MG in size first, or they won’t attach properly). I invite you to contact me at Zubeydah@gmail.com with any questions you might have about submitting information to the wiki – or how to set up your own user account and perhaps even build your first wiki page. Tell us your stories, Rosenfeld; we are waiting to hear them!! IMPORTANT UPDATE: Thanks to the thoughtful suggestions of Master Rene Damours, Ansteorra’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, and the labors of Ansteorra’s Webminister, Lord John Buchanan, the Persona Page Submission form now has a spot for individuals to provide Special Needs information -- mobility restrictions, allergies, In-Case-Of- Court instructions, etc. We also have a spot to provide information on your preferred pronouns. If you already have a wiki page and would like to add either pronouns or Special Needs information, please fill out the first three fields on the online form, and then only fill in the additional sections you'd like added. 35
