St. Francis of Assisi Parish Humphrey, Nebraska The Tau March 2021 Volume 13, Number 7 Dear Parishioners, When compiling a list of potential vacation destinations, I don’t think many of us would rate “the middle of the desert” near the top. After all, most of us don’t find searing daytime heat followed by chilling nighttime cold to be the ideal vacation weather. Of course, if the weather in the desert doesn’t bother us, the availability of food probably would. Who in their right mind would want to spend their vacation in the desert? The answer is, of course, Jesus Christ. Having just been baptized in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist, Jesus is now looking for a little time to rest and relax before beginning the three years of His public ministry. So, where does Jesus go for His vacation? You guessed it - the desert to be tempted by the devil. What I find curious, however, is that the devil tempts Jesus in the same way he tempts us. Recall the devil’s first temptation of Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to gluttony by challenging Him to change stones into bread. Jesus responds to this temptation by quoting from the book of Deuteronomy, “Man does not live by bread alone.” This response is brilliant. You see, our passions are only a part of who we truly are; and a lesser part at that. As lesser powers, these passions are designed to be ruled by the powers of reason and free will. Man’s reason and free will are fed, not with bread alone, but, as the rest of the quote from Deuteronomy reads, “by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” It should be clear, then, that the devil is tempting Jesus no differently than he tempts each one of us. He wants us to exchange the lesser good of instant gratification for the higher good of the Word of God. But, how is Jesus able to resist this temptation so easily? Simple. He has perfected the practice of fasting. Through the practice of fasting, Jesus is now liberated from one of the most powerful of all human passions; the passion of hunger. Unencumbered by the demands of His emotions, Jesus is freer to pursue the true good. Next, the devil tempts Jesus with pride. This he does by mocking Jesus. “If you are the Son of God,” Satan jeers, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written, ‘He will command His angels to guard you.’” Notice how the devil quotes scripture to strengthen the power of his lie? Of course, a loose translation of what is really said is, “I triple-dog dare you.” Of course, Jesus is not about to be goaded into a foolish display of power. Rather, Jesus simply dismisses the devil saying, “You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.” After failing in his first two attempts, the devil brings out his sinister one. After all, the entirety of the human race is now in the legitimate possession of the devil. Thus, when the devil offers the world and its kingdoms to Jesus Christ, he is making an extremely cunning maneuver. He offers Jesus just what He came to earth
for; the liberation of His people. Most tempting of all, Jesus could win this liberation by avoiding the pains of the cross. But, think about it. If Jesus were to listen to Satan. He would be putting more trust in Satan’s promise than in the Word of God. This is a problem because, as we all know, the devil is a liar. Even if Jesus takes that quick and seductive path of avoiding the cross, the devil isn’t going to keep His promise. Yet, how often do we seem to think he will? For, just like he did with Jesus, the devil wants us to choose the quick and easy path that avoids suffering. Of course, we are not as free as Jesus Christ. Thus, we focus on the disciplines of prayers, fasting and almsgiving more deeply during Lent. We can focus more on prayer by going to daily Mass, even if only occasionally, attending stations of the cross, reading one chapter of the gospel each day or even each week, praying the rosary instead of listening to the radio while driving or simply saying extra prayers every day, even something very simple like one Hail Mary. We can practice fasting by giving up some pleasure we really enjoy like a food or drink or even something like the snooze button or a television program. We can practice almsgiving by contributing to our favorite charity, giving more to the collection or helping a relative, friend or neighbor with an anonymous gift. What we do is not as important as doing something. For the only way we can allow Jesus into our hearts is by making room for Him. Then, Jesus can free us from our disproportionate desire so that we can become the people He is calling us to be. In Christ, Rev. Eric Olsen

BWN Committee Meeting Minutes February 3, 2021 7:00 PM in Rectory I. Prayer: Missy Braun opened the meeting with prayer at 7:05 PM. II. Roll Call: Present were Missy Braun, Beverly Zach, Crystal Harper, and Danielle Bender. Absent were Jarod/Keisha Podliska, Dan Fehringer, Sam/Emily Zach, Andy/Alison Reigle, and Tyler/Marie Larson. III. 2020 Wrap-Up The event financial report was looked over and discussed. Our net income was $56,791.53. The meals as a take-out went very well. We received a lot of positive feedback on the meal and that it was still hot. Filling boxes as people came to pick up meals worked better at keeping food hot and fresh verses pre-packaging them. We discussed allowing this to happen in the future, as we did get some new tickets purchased with to-go meals. There were only a couple minor problems we need to address for the future; one being there is no delivery. A lot of people were very happy to get the bottle of wine, as they didn’t expect that. It was a nice ‘gift’. The online auction went very well for the first year. We encountered a few minor issues but overall were very happy with the auction. We were very thankful to Lori Wegener and Michael Wegener Implement for the software program and assistance in the online auction. After the event, one bigger problem was that people thought, when the night was over, it automatically charged their registered credit card for purchases. Several buyers had outstanding bills and we had to contact them to get payment. Now that we know how this works, we can include this in the information we share before the event. Overall, positive feedback on the online auction. We wouldn’t need to open the auction a week before, maybe just a couple days before. However, we thought being able to see the auction items before bidding opened was helpful. It was suggested we needed more auction items. We were a little hesitant this year with it being online, but we could have had more items. We didn’t
have a lot of smaller items/baskets, so, once the price was too high, it took away some bidders that still wanted to support the event. The mystery box was a huge hit. Many board members were asked what was in the winning box. This year it contained a wallet with cash and lottery tickets. Next year we will consider doing both a male and female box. We could also look at the mystery box and add to its value once it hits certain bid increments (i.e. $500 add, $750 add, or $1,000 add). Still some concern about the Wi-Fi in the Community Center. Katie Krings had told Missy Braun we could get the guest password so people can place bids while at their tables. There was some disappointment in the alumni activity with the event. We may need to do a better job of soliciting them as both donors and bidders. Committee members are already beginning to look for auction items for 2021. IV. Board Members This was Tim and Beverly Zach’s last year. We thank them for their service. We discussed a couple replacements and will reach out to them. Next year several members will be going off, so, if couples are interested in joining, it is a three-year term and we really appreciate the help. If you are interested in joining our committee, reach out to a current board member or Missy Braun at the parish office. Closing Prayer: Missy Braun closed with prayer. Missy Braun, Secretary

St. Francis of Assisi School Board Minutes February 4, 2021 The St. Francis school board met on Thursday, February 4, 2021, in the St. Francis rectory. Members present were Fr. Eric Olsen, Mrs. Jennifer Dunn, Todd Preister, Lisa Geilenkirchen, Brandon Morfeld, Lindsey Kosch, Brenda Foltz and Ethan Bruland. The opening prayer was led by Lisa Geilenkirchen. There were no guests attending. The January minutes were approved. MONTHLY REPORTS: School: Humphrey and Lindsay Catholic school students attended a March for Life in Norfolk, NE. These students from both schools traveled together. There has been a lot of positive feedback, and we hope to participate again in the future. Mrs. Dunn and Mr. Bishop helped organize this, and it was great to see the 7 – 12 grade students come together for a great cause. Catholic Schools Week began with rolls and reading of Bible stories with Bible buddies on Monday. Tuesday, the high school traveled to Holy Family and Holy Family elementary traveled to St. Francis for a prayer service focusing on the Presentation of the Lord. Wednesday was student appreciation day, and each student was able to win prizes and enjoy some ice cream and cookie bar. Thursday was a snow day and Friday there was a K-12 free throw contest. NSAA sports post season guidelines have no major changes. Capacity is still at 50% of that specific location. Tim Hassenstab and A&H donated $5,000 to the school and thanked the administration and staff for all they do for the community. We, as a parish and school, greatly appreciate their generosity. Parent/teacher conferences are being held the 2nd week of February. Prom is still a go at the moment, and CDC guidelines will be addressed as they change. Humphrey St. Francis has possible teacher positions available in the upper elementary and is advertising for a 7-12 Religion teacher. Finances: No major finance changes in the last month. The school did apply for the second round of the PPP loan.
President’s Comments: Fr. Olsen was very edified through Catholic Schools Week and the March for Life with the schools interacting together. Adoration has been a great experience with students, and Fr. believes this practice will impact their Catholic lives for years to come. It was also mentioned to bring in seminarians to speak to our students. It has a great future impact seeing what a Catholic education can turn into. January Business: High school classes are looking for alternative fundraisers outside of the regular Sunday morning breakfasts. Due to Covid our options are limited, so any input would be helpful. Prom and graduation costs will not be any lower than prior years; therefore these fundraisers are essential for the junior and senior classes particularly. Expenses usually run around $60 per student for prom alone. We discussed the school website and what we can do to regularly maintain the site. Teacher bios and visuals of our students are key. The next meeting will be held on March 9, 2021, at 7 PM. The closing prayer was led by Todd Preister. Ethan Bruland, Secretary
St. Francis of Assisi Parish Finance Board Meeting Minutes February 16, 2021 The meeting of the finance board opened with prayer led by Fr. Olsen at 7:04 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Vice President, Kevin Small, called the meeting to order. Those present were Fr. Olsen, Duane Kosch, Ashley Krings, Lisa Krings, Todd Preister, Paul Ramaekers, Kevin Small, Tim Werner and Carol Wemhoff. Dan Fehringer and Bryan Reichmuth were excused. Financials The financial reports for January 2021 were reviewed, discussed and approved. Pastor’s Comments Fr. Olsen presented the board with a detailed income and expense proposed budget report for 2021-2022. A lengthy discussion was held on staff benefits and wages. It was the consensus to approve a 3% wage increase for staff for the upcoming fiscal year. Benefit costs continually increase year after year. Providing solutions to balance the budget remains a constant struggle and concern. Additionally, it was approved to increase the 2021-2022 tuition for Kindergarten to $1,975 which is still lower than the cost for the pre-school program tuition. All other grades will not have any increase for 2021-2022. Fr. Olsen thanked the board for their input and thought process in making these decisions for the school and the parish. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at 7:00 PM. The meeting closed with a prayer and blessing led by Fr. Olsen at 8:55 PM. Respectfully Submitted, Carol Wemhoff, Secretary
