The episode starts with narration from Dream and a fantastical visual treat. As the King of Dreams talks about the liv- ing and dreaming world, we see his raven flapping through the air and arriving at his Castle. Dream is in pursuit of a rogue Night- mare, something that Lucienne (the li- brarian from the comics for those keeping tabs on characters) reminds her master is a dangerous ordeal. Donning his mask, Dream heads off to find Corinthian, using his powers to get rid of his creation. We begin our first tale in 1916 England. Dr John Hathaway arrives at a massive mansion looking for Roderick Burgess aka. Magus. He greets Hathaway warmly, and the pair find solace in one another’s grief. After some chitchat, Hatahway presents the Grimoire; a book full of spells that can bring back the dead. And, also, imprison the Angel of Darkness. As the Order begin chanting and conducting their ritual, Dream fades from view before he can dispatch Corinthian. And as he appears at the mansion with Magus and the others, they imprison him, removing his mask and his clothes. 3
The Sandman Episode Guide Powerless and trapped in the waking domain, Dream’s capture causes devastation across London. The "sleepy sickness" affects nearly one million men, women and children in every town across the world. And that is, of course, as a result of capturing Dream. Corinthian shows up to see Magus and offers his help in keeping the Sandman locked up. He warns that Magus has captured Dream, but with his ruby and mask at hand, the Magus himself should be able to conjure up some of Dream’s powers. Not only that, but he also reveals the necessary tools to keep Dream locked up. This includes a glass cage and stimulants to make sure no guard falls asleep in his presence. Oh, and shooing away Jessamy, his raven, too. Magus confronts the Lord of Dreams and offers him a proposition — bring back his son in exchange for freedom. Dream though is a patient man and bides his time before he’s freed. 10 years later, Dream is still imprisoned but by now, his ruby, sand and mask have all brought youth and prosperity to Roderick and the others. The rest of the world though is suffering. After a decade, that young boy, Alex, has grown to a young man and he heads down to see Dream. He’s genuinely concerned and apologizes for the Magus’ actions. He pleads with Dream to follow Roderick’s wishes... but it turns out he’s actually listening from the wings. Roderick is blinded by paranoia and tasks Alex with killing Jessamy, that continues to lurk around the estate. Jessamy tracks down its master though in the basement and works to free Dream, pecking relentlessly at the glass... until Alex shoots the bird and blood spatters up the cage. So much for retribution and apologies; with tears stinging his eyes, Dream condemns the world ravaged by the savagery of man. Roderick’s undoing is not man but actually woman. Ethel Cripps, to be precise. After learning that she’s pregnant and Roderick demanding she get an abortion, she takes off with Dream’s possessions, including his ruby, the Grimoire and 200,000 in cash. With little other choice, Roderick decides to try and bargain with Lord of Dreamers. Dream remains silent. However, a scuffle with Alex sees Roderick bash his head on the cage and bleed out. In his dying breath, he promises Dream that he’s never getting out. 9 months later and Ethel Cripps gives birth to a son called Johnny. While watching over her son, the dancing flames of the fire in the background, she promises that no one will stand in their way to greatness. All the while of course, Dream is still confined and caged. Alex brings Paul, his lover, down to see Dream and offers to bargain. In exchange for freeing Dream, they want to make sure they’re both unharmed. After murdering his raven though, Dream is not in the forgiving mood. Time passes and Alex grows to a frail old man. One last offering and one last bout of silence; Johnny decides not to come down and see Dream anymore. Interestingly, as his wheelchair is wheeled away from the circle, the yellow lines are broken. And it’s just what Dream needs, as the security guard yawns and falls asleep. Awakening on a beach in Majorca, Dream shows up and manages to coerce him into shooting the cage, freeing the Lord from his chamber. Dream has a score to settle and eventually gives Alex a gift. The gift of eternal sleep. With Dreams and Nightmares running wild after all this time, Dream’s awakening means he’s back in business. And part of that comes from tracking down Corinthian, who is still out there. Un- fortunately, all that time in the cage has caused Dream to be weakened, so naturally Lucienne encourages him to head back into his castle. The trouble is, the realm is not how he left it. A desolate wasteland awaits Dream in place of a once-thriving Kingdom. He promises to bring them all back and remake his world as he sees fit. 4
The Sandman Episode Guide Imperfect Hosts Season 1 Episode Number: 2 Season Episode: 2 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Allan Heinberg Director: Jamie Childs Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine), Joely Richardson (Ethel Cripps), Niamh Walsh (Young Ethel Cripps), Sanjeev Bhaskar (Cain), Asim Chaudhry (Abel), Nina Wadia (Fate Mother), Souad Faress (Fate Crone), Dinita Gohil (Fate Maiden), David Thewlis (John Dee), Ansu Kabia (Ruthven Sykes), Graham Bohea (Hangman), Joe Corrigall (Sam), Crystal Yu (Jackie) Summary: Morpheus begins his quest to find his tools of power — his sand, ruby and helm — by paying a visit to a pair of notoriously dysfunctional brothers. The episode begins with Dream walking through the remnants of his old cas- tle. Lucienne admits that after he left, the library withered and disappeared. The royal librarian was confident Dream would return but there’s a certain poetic irony to a librarian staying loyal to a li- brary with no books. Dream is not at full strength, and without his belongings — the helm, the ruby etc. — that may not be possible in the foreseeable future. So there’s nothing to it but to find Ethel and track down his belongings. In order to do that, Dream first visits Cain and Abel, wanting to take back a gift he gave them a long time ago. And that happens to be their gargoyle, Gregory. Dropping to his knees and outstretching his hand, Dream absorbs the creature and that paves way for us to tumble through a trippy series of dreams to summon the Fates. Or, The Three as they’re more commonly known as; this trio of goddesses consists of the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. Through them, Dream learns that his belongings are scattered across various different areas. His helm was traded to a demon. The ruby happens to pass from mother to son (this is, of course, hinting toward Johnny and Ethel.) Finally, the sand belongs to Johanna Constantine. With some clues to go on, Dream prepares to track down his things. Dream sets his sights on Johanna Constantine first, deciding to head off to London and get his sand back. In his absence, Corinthian makes a brief appearance, warning Lucienne that Dream doesn’t care about her and soon or later, he’ll make that clear. 5
The Sandman Episode Guide Dream a Little Dream of Me Season 1 Episode Number: 3 Season Episode: 3 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Jim Campolongo Director: Jamie Childs Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine), Joely Richardson (Ethel Cripps), Meera Syal (Erica), Clare Higgins (Mad Hettie), David Thewlis (John Dee), Eleanor Fanyinka (Rachel), Hannah van der Westhuysen (The Princess), Stephen Odubola (Kevin Brody), Marcus Fraser (Agili- eth), Stevie Hutchinson (Alex Logue), Nina Galano (Astra Logue), Olu Adaeze (Armed Officer #1), Marcus Adolphy (Cab Driver), Joe Corri- gall (Sam), Sam Donnelly (Armed Officer #2), Laurie Kynaston (Alex Burgess) Summary: Morpheus tracks down the last-known person in possession of his sand — and receives an unexpected lesson on humanity. Ethel pays a visit to her son. The episode begins with Dream arriv- ing to see Johanna Constantine. After a rather lucid dream involving a guy called Logue summoning demons, she awakens in the back of a taxi. After paying her way, she steps out and is warned by an old woman called Hettie, telling her that Mor- pheus is back. Dream soon appears before her, telling Johanna that they have business. She shrugs it off though, more preoccupied by the exorcism she has to deal with. And it doesn’t take long for the demon to show itself, possessing a man called Kevin. After destroying its host, the demon turns on Johanna. That is, until Dream shows up. He recognizes the demon as Agilieth, who promises to show Dream where his helm is. Johanna refuses to listen though and exorcises him back to Hell. Dream tries to convince Johanna to hand over the sand pouch but it turns out she actually sold it a while back. Lucienne ignores Dream’s wishes and shows up with a raven called Matthew. Realizing he can approach Johanna in her dreams, Dream sees her darkest fears and waits for her to awaken. As the pair talk, Johanna realizes just where his sand may be — Rachel Moodie, her old flame. Johanna demands Dream stay outside and heads in alone to confront her ex and get the sand back. His raven, Matthew, also warns that humans aren’t trustworthy when he rocks up. Eventually Dream shows up and gets his sand back. Rachel is sprawled out on the bed, dying before their very eyes. The sand was the only thing keeping her alive. Dream points out that Johanna is responsible for this; after all, if she’d kept hold of the sand then her ex-lover would be fine. She berates Dream into submission, where he lets her pass gently, using the sand to give her a good dream. 7
The Sandman Episode Guide Meanwhile, Ethel approaches her son, wearing the Amulet of Protection that has kept her safe all this time. John refuses to hand it over though, pointing out that he’s altered it so it only works for him now. Ethel removes her amulet, deciding John should have it, trying to bargain with him for the ruby. This amulet has kept Ethel alive for 116 years but she’s done now. After hugging her son goodbye, she withers and passes before his eyes. John eventually up and leaves, only to be approached by the Corinthian outside. Meanwhile, Dream turns his attention to Hell, determined to get his Helm back. 8
The Sandman Episode Guide A Hope in Hell Season 1 Episode Number: 4 Season Episode: 4 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Austin Guzman Director: Jamie Childs Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer Morningstar), Sarah Niles (Rose- mary), Cassie Clare (Mazikeen), Martyn Ford (Squatterbloat), Munya Chawawa (Choronzon), Deborah Oyelade (Nada), Ernest Kingsley Ju- nior (Morpheus / Kai’ckul), Sam Strike (Todd), David Thewlis (John Dee) Summary: A lead on the whereabouts of his helm compels Morpheus to seek an audience with Lucifer. A confused John receives a helping hand from a good Samaritan. The episode begins with Dream and Matthew the Raven showing up in Hell. With cold winds swirling around them, they decide to follow the line of the Damned. There are certain protocols that come with entering Hell though, some- thing a demon called Squatterbloat is well acquainted with when he greets them at the gates. Despite berating Dream over his lack of a crown, the demon does agree to take him to the Morningstar. Lucifer Morn- ingstar, to be precise. Lucifer is far more powerful than Dream, and without all his trinkets, he’s more vulnerable than before. With a litany of jokes from Matthew for company, they press on. Eventually they arrive at the foot of Lucifer’s castle; a towering, imposing structure that stretches on to dizzying heights. Lucifer greets Dream, wanting to join their two realms together. Dream though ignores this and stays true to his mission, wanting his Helm back. So the only thing for it, is to summon every single demon to the gates. It doesn’t take long for Dream to realize the Helm belongs to Choronzon, a Duke of Hell. With the Helm under his arm, he bargains with the Demon. If Dream is to lose this, he’ll become a servant to Choronzon in Hell for all eternity. Meanwhile in New York, John ends up getting a lift from a kindly taxi driver where we’re repeated the story about Ethel’s thievery. After stopping at a gas station, Rosemary (the driver) stats to have second thoughts about this. She speaks to the cashier, urging him to ring 911. The thing is, John has the amulet, and when the cashier shows off his gun, things take a turn for the worst. A spatter of blood and John leaves once more with Rosemary. John bemoans trusting her and demands she drive him to the ruby. Back in Hell, Dream squares off against Lucifer. The former tells Matthew to head back and see Lucienne, informing her of his fate. Meanwhile, the duel between Lucifer and Dream takes place; a battle of wits and the mind. Matthew gives Dream some words of encouragement during a crucial point, with the Lord of Dreams eventually settling on "Hope" as his winning move. And with that, Lucifer is defeated and Dream is returned his Helm. 9
The Sandman Episode Guide "One day Morpheus, we shall destroy you," Lucifer promises. And with that, Dream turns and leaves Hell with his Helm, one step closer to regaining dominion over his realm. Meanwhile, John shows mercy on Rosemary and hands over his Amulet to her once he gets possession of the ruby. But when he leaves her, John promises one thing — to change the world. 10
The Sandman Episode Guide 24/7 Season 1 Episode Number: 5 Season Episode: 5 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Ameni Rozsa Director: Jamie Childs Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: Mason Alexander Park (Desire), Joely Richardson (Ethel Cripps), Ni- amh Walsh (Young Ethel Cripps), Vanesu Samunyai (Rose Walker), Emma Duncan (Bette Munroe), Steven Brand (Marsh Janowski), Lau- rie Davidson (Mark Brewer), Daisy Head (Judy Talbot), James Udom (Garry), Lourdes Faberes (Kate Fletcher), David Thewlis (John Dee), Sarah Quist (Lindy), Jennifer Armour (Traffic Report Terri), Kirsten Foster (News Anchor Annie), Jay Rincon (Meteorologist Mike), Georgia Goodman (Rebecca), Walles Hamonde (Jeff) Summary: With Morpheus caught off guard, John settles in at a diner to watch the people around him — and put his theory about truth and lies to a terrifying test. The episode starts with Matthew desper- ate to awaken Dream, who’s clearly ex- hausted and passed out from his or- deal in Hell. Meanwhile, John has pos- session of Dream’s ruby and shows up at a diner, where we spend the entirety of our episode. John sits and watches the drama be- fore him unfold. A guy called Mark tries chatting to a young woman, Judy, but she interprets this as flirting and immedi- ately replies to his greeting with "I’m gay." She also rattles off some rhetoric about Big Pharma too, tying into Mark, who is actually going for a job interview at a big company called Vanguard. Staying ever-watchful, John eventually speaks to Bette, the waitress. She’s actually a writer and consumed by her own lies. At least according to John. With the power of the ruby in hand, John decides to make her a more honest woman and promises that they’ll change the world together. Part of this change comes from John manipulating everyone in the diner to only tell the truth and reveal exactly how they’re really feeling. A couple on their anniversary end up disagreeing about food and their diet. Judy hasn’t heard from her girlfriend and worries it could be over, given they had a fight over jealous feelings. With John playing the puppet-master, the puppets all play their parts, with the strings of truth moving and contorting toward knives of justice. He watches everyone play their roles, speaking their harsh and destructive truths. Those truths present themselves in everyone kissing and giving in to lust... as well as fear. Garry attacks Mark after he sleeps with Kate. Grabbing him round the neck, Mark retaliates by stabbing him. This incident soon sees everyone turn on John and realize that he’s the one 11
The Sandman Episode Guide responsible for this. He shrugs off their threats, telling them that the truth is "a cleansing fire that burns away the lies we’ve told each other and ourselves." And this is the result — killing and destroying those inside the diner. With bloodshed all around, Dream appears and shows John the true nature of dreams and how these inspire people and keep them alive. If humanity is robbed of this and their hope, then man will be completely decimated. When Johnny suggests he rob the Dream Lord of his power, he ends up facing his nightmares and coming face to face with Dream inside the remnants of his castle. John is not deterred though, and is convinced that the Kingdom belongs to him, dead-set on taking this for himself. Destroying the ruby and letting the power release, Dream comes back in possession of his trinkets. He decides not to kill John though, given the ruby came to him through no fault of his own. Instead, he places him back to sleep in the psychiatric ward. Dream remains steadfast on healing the wounds inflicted on this realm and his own rebuilding is about to begin... but he’s being watched by his sibling, Desire. 12

The episode starts with Dream feeding pi- geons in the park. He reflects on his king- dom being destroyed and his mission of vengeance. Despite being more powerful than he has been in eons, he feels direc- tionless and lost. He feels nothing. Dream is approached by his sister, Death. They walk together, where the for- mer comments how good she is with hu- mans. Of course, she’s had a lot of prac- tice and that’s shown to us when she vis- its an old man called Harry playing the violin. Dream watches all of this play out in silence. Interestingly, we get this juxtaposition of a "nice death" against a "tragic death", com- ing in the form of a guy called Sam, who drowns while on his honeymoon. Death also makes a trip to visit a baby in its cot bed too. Dream ponders the nature of life and death, and how humans fear the sunless lands. "At the end, each of us stand alone" Death narrates, pointing out how there’s strength in companionship. 13
The Sandman Episode Guide After finding herself at a crossroads and unsure whether to continue on, Dream found purpose in being there for humans and realizing that she needs them as much as they need her. When Dream and Death head back to the park where they started, the two siblings part ways. A lot of this episode has been about Death and how that ties into the true nature of humanity. Part of that comes from seeing flashes, beginning in 1389 where we see Death and Dream enter into a wager. With a man at the table boasting about never dying, Death decides to grant him his wish. Dream is convinced that within a century he’ll be begging to die but Death is not so sure. Dream approaches Hob Gadling, the man whose wish is granted, and encourages him to meet in 100 years’ time in this exact same tavern. What follows are a number of meetings between the two every 100 years. From the highest of highs of 1589 to the lowest of lows in 1689; Hob’s life spirals out of control and he hits rock bottom. But even at his lowest, Robert Gadling (his new alias) refuses to die. In 1789, Johanna Constantine shows with two of her men and demands Death and Gadling join her. Dream uses his sand and blows it in her face, letting her see old ghosts from her past. However, Gadling and Dream continue to meet through the centuries, with Gadling convinced that Dream is lonely and is seeking friendship. Gadling is not deterred by Dream’s menacing words that follow, and he eventually decides to leave and not return. Still, Gadling continues showing every 100 years all the same, just in case they want to be friends... which leads us through to 1989. It turns out the pub is on the verge of being torn down and changed into flats. This comes about around the same time as Dream being imprisoned, which shows just why he was unable to show up and meet Gadling. Dream now shows up and sees that there’s a new inn that’s been set up nearby to the flats. And lo and behold, Gadling is there waiting for him. Dream smiles and apologizes for being late. Meanwhile, Desire has a plan to try and capture his brother. 14
The Sandman Episode Guide The Doll’s House Season 1 Episode Number: 7 Season Episode: 7 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Heather Bellson Director: Andrés Baiz Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: Mason Alexander Park (Desire), John Cameron Mitchell (Hal Carter), Asim Chaudhry (Abel), Vanesu Samunyai (Rose Walker), Razane Jam- mal (Lyta Hall), Sandra James-Young (Unity Kincaid), Donna Preston (Despair), Nina Wadia (Fate Mother), Souad Faress (Fate Crone), Dinita Gohil (Fate Maiden), Lloyd Everitt (Hector Hall), Andi Osho (Miranda Walker), Cara Horgan (Zelda), Lily Travers (Barbie), Richard Fleesh- man (Ken), Daisy Badger (Chantal), Jill Winternitz (The Good Doc- tor), Kerry Shale (Nimrod), Danny Kirrane (Fun Land), Sam Hazel- dine (Barnaby), Lisa O’Hare (Clarice), Ben Wiggins (Carl), Stephen Fry (Gilbert), Mark Hamill (Merv Pumpkinhead (voice)), Eddie Karanja (Jed Walker), Shelley Williams (Eleanor Rubio), Peter De Jersey (Mr. Holdaway), Aryel Tsoto (Young Jed Walker), Nicholas Anscombe (Merv Pumpkinhead (Body)), Aimee Cassettari (Flight Attendant), Angus Castle-Doughty (Devin), Kai Ismail (Teenage Waiter), Charlie Locke (Trey), Leo Munby (Pianist) Summary: Lucienne comes to Morpheus with disturbing news. Rose Walker goes in search of family. Admirers of Corinthians work scheme to get his attention. The episode starts with us diving through time to 2015. We’re in Cape Kennedy, Florida, and in the middle of a big fam- ily dispute no less. In the wake of a cou- ple breaking up, two siblings, Jed and Rose Walker, are separated from one an- other. It’s the most heartbreaking thing in the world, as Rose struggles to hold back tears. Meanwhile, Desire and Despair con- tinue to scheme, believing there’s a new vortex. As it turns out, this is actually Rose Walker. News of this spreads across to Dream’s castle. Lucienne feeds back to Dream that were are over 11,000 entities in the vicinity but three of the Major Arcana are gone. Gault; a shape-changing nightmare, the Corinthian and Fiddler’s Green. Dream blames himself, but shrugs off the vortex rumours, given Rose is no threat at the moment. So instead, Lucienne sends Matthew on to check on her. When we return to Rose, we’re in 2021 and she’s still looking for her brother. Unemployed and out of money (thanks to her mother spending everything on the apartment), Rose is reminded that she does have a job. Or at lest an opportunity. Rose has an interview off in London about her family history, in exchange for 250 pounds per day for 7 days. It’s not a bad deal, especially for someone out of options. 15
The Sandman Episode Guide Rose arrives in Sussex with Lyta Hall, where they rock up at an elderly care home and meet Unity. She has a dolls house in her room, which was a gift for her 12th birthday. However she never got a chance to play with it given she was asleep all that time. If you’ll remember, she was one of the affected dreamers while Morpheus was caged. Anyway, now that Unity is awake she has big news. She was actually pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl called Miranda Walker while she was asleep. Long story short, Unity is actually Rose’s great grandmother! Meanwhile, a convention for serial killers looks set to go ahead. However, there have been rumblings about the Corinthian showing up. He’s one of the more prolific killers out there but as of yet, no one has managed to get him to attend. So in order to convince him, one of the women suggests they enact copycat killings to get his attention. And that comes from taking the eyes of one’s victims. The thing is, The Corinthian is far more interested in Rose Waler, and he stops by her apart- ment trying to find her. With her life threatened, the Three arrive before Rose in a dream and warn her, urging the girl to be careful. Rose though is offered a job from Unity and that comes from trying to find Jed. She also meets her downstairs neighbours, Ken and Barbie, as well as Chantal and Zelda, her upstairs neighbours. It’s all pretty accurate to the comics, right down to Matthew watching from outside as Rose tries to find Jed. Rose soon meets Gilbert from Hal’s attic, who helps save her from a couple of thugs in the alleyway. Matthew happens to be watching and he feeds this back to Lucienne, who realizes that Jed is oddly missing from both the Waking and Dreaming world. Interestingly, Gault was the last nightmare Jed had and Lucienne theorizes that he may have been snatched then. However, they’re interrupted by Rose showing up, inexplicably appearing in the Dreaming. The Corinthian also shows up but not to see Dream and Rose. He’s seen the copycat killings and heads in to meet the serial killers. They implore him to join them at the convention and to give the keynote speech. Corinthian wants to bring a guess who can "take their shared dreams to a whole new level" and that is, of course, the vortex herself, Rose. As the episode closes out, we see that Jed is alive but not necessarily well. His guardians don’t take kindly to him and after he tries to run away, they catch up and bundle him in the trunk of the car. 16
The Sandman Episode Guide Playing House Season 1 Episode Number: 8 Season Episode: 8 Originally aired: Friday August 05, 2022 Writer: Alexander Newman-Wise Director: Andrés Baiz Show Stars: Tom Sturridge (Morpheus / Dream), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Patton Oswalt, Matthew the Raven (voice) Guest Stars: John Cameron Mitchell (Hal Carter), Lenny Henry (Martin Tenbones (voice)), Vanesu Samunyai (Rose Walker), Razane Jammal (Lyta Hall), Lloyd Everitt (Hector Hall), Sandra James-Young (Unity Kincaid), Sam Hazeldine (Barnaby), Lisa O’Hare (Clarice), Lily Travers (Bar- bie), Richard Fleeshman (Ken), Daisy Badger (Chantal), Cara Hor- gan (Zelda), Andi Osho (Miranda Walker), Ann Ogbomo (Gault), Ed- die Karanja (Jed Walker), Shelley Williams (Eleanor Rubio), Isla Gie (Child Zelda), Sacharissa Claxton (Officer Sandra Davis), Dan Mat- teucci (Armed Officer) Summary: As Morpheus closes in on one of his missing creations, Rose ramps up efforts to locate her brother — and unwittingly makes a friend’s dream come true. The episode picks up right where we left off, with Rose standing before Dream and Lucienne. She dreams her way into an audience with the King of Dreams, but he welcomes her and allows Rose to talk. Now, it would seem that Dream believes he’s partly responsible for the birth of a new vortex. When Dream mentioned Jed, this appears to have been the trig- ger to bring Rose there. Dream believes that his missing Nightmare, Gault, is the one holding Jed. Dream encourages Rose to continue looking for her brother, promising to help out in her dreams while she searches in the waking world. Now, Jed happens to be locked in the dingy basement of a nasty house, with Aunt Clarice and Uncle Barnaby keeping him under strict surveillance. They’re using him for his money, with Jed’s miserable existence made slightly more tolerable by some fantastical dreams about being a superhero called The Sandman, courtesy of Gault. Speaking of fantastic dreams, Lyta ends up dreaming of her husband, who builds her dream house and encourages her to stay with him. Lyta doesn’t though, and instead awakens and speaks to Rose. Determined, she’s printed out numerous Missing Person posters relating to her brother and wants Lyta’s help in putting them up. Rose first visits Ms Rubio — the woman working at the foster agency — and convinces her to visit Jed. Uncle Barnaby speaks to Jed when he finds out about the visit, demanding he be good and even offers to let him sleep in a real bed... but only if Jed keeps his mouth shut and follows orders. If not, then Barnaby will break every bone in his body. Ms. Rubio shows up and all is well for a while, but when Jed takes his leave and hugs the agent, he slips a note into her bag. Unfortunately, this backfires. Barnaby manages to infiltrate the letter and promises to make Jed pay that night. 17
The Sandman Episode Guide While Jed prepares for Barnaby’s wrath, The Corinthian finds Ms Rubio and kills her in his usual way, even eating her eyeballs while reading Jed’s file. Rose begins dream walking, accompanied by Dream who serves as her protégé. He encourages Rose to find her own path, as she wanders through fantastical dreams being conjured by all her friends. Eventually, she finds young Zelda in a graveyard and follows this young child through a doorway to Jed’s dream. Jed soon shows up before Dream, telling him that he’s the Master of Dreams. Dream is be- mused over this title, but everything is thrown out of whack when Rose appears. Dream shows Gault’s true form, which has shape-shifted from Rose’s mother into her celestial form. As for Rose, she urges Jed to tell her where he is... but the dream ends before he can say anything. Thankfully though, Rose figures out where Jed is being held and takes off, courtesy of the land- scape in his dream. As for Lyta though, she awakens from another dream with Hector to find out she’s inexplicably pregnant. Meanwhile, Dream dispatches Gault and banishes her to the darkness. Lucienne isn’t exactly pleased with this though, pointing out that Gault has changed and this Nightmare only wanted to dream and inspire rather than cause fear. Speaking of inspire, Jed awakens to find his house empty and a complete state. The Corinthian greets him at the basement landing, claiming to have been sent by Rose. With his guardians dead, Corinthian drives off with Jed, exclaiming that he’s looking forward to meeting his sister. 18

The episode starts with Rose approach- ing Lyta and telling her what’s been go- ing on. She brings up the dream walking, and how Jed spoke to her about where he is. Rose is taken aback when Lyta be- lieves her story... especially as she’s ac- tually pregnant. It would seem that Rose is weakening the walls between the realms so Matthew tells Lucienne, who decides to keep this from Dream. Lucienne is still annoyed that she’s being kept out the loop, not to mention the situation involving Gault, and encourages Matthew not to tell the King of Dreams given he’s in a bad mood. Instead, Luci- enne tasks Matthew with continuing to watch Rose. The Corinthian brings Jed to the Royal Empire Hotel, and rings Rose to let her know, imploring the girl to take her time. Of course, The Corinthian has actually shown up at the site for the Serial Killer Convention with Jed. The latter is unaware of exactly where he is, but Rose is 3 hours away and drives up to meet him as quickly as she can. Lyta hangs back and decides she may want to stay with her Hector in her dreams after all. Lyta is convinced she has no life and wants to live in this dream land for as long as possible. The thing is, cracks are beginning to show in that world. When Dream eventually finds out through second-hand sources, he approaches Lucienne and wants to assess the extent of the damages. Dream asks Lucienne for help and advice. Lucienne brings up that there may be something new in The Dreaming and Rose is the one responsible. 19
The Sandman Episode Guide Lyta’s presence with Hector is what’s causing these cracks so they have no choice but to stop their meetings. Dream eventually fades Hector from view, right in front of Lyta who watches on with horror, helplessly. Dream is quick to remind Lyta that this is a dream. However, her child is still going to live... but on a technicality. Dream matter-of-factly tells her that as the baby was conceived in the Dreaming then it belongs to him. He’ll come for it some time in the future. Although Jed is told to stay in the hotel room, he does no such thing and sneaks into the Serial Killer Convention. Corinthian is invited in and receives a rapturous applause when he steps up to greet the crowd. While everyone discusses the nature of killing, Rose shows up at the convention, unaware of exactly where she’s ended up. After checking out various rooms discussing the nature of killing, Gilbert notices The Corinthian and realizes that things are going to turn sour very fast. Gilbert hurriedly shows up to visit Dream, revealing himself to be Fiddler’s Green, hence why he recognized Corinthian. He also warns the damage this nightmare could do if he’s left unchecked. At the Convention, Corinthian teams up with several other killers to dispatch a pretender called Philip; a man pretending to be the Boogeyman. While they dispatch him in the kitchen, Jed happens to notice and rushes out in horror, However, he runs right into another killer, Fun Land, someone who has a dark history involv- ing kids. He holds Jed’s hand and leads him up to his room. Thankfully, the pair run into Rose en-route in the hallway. As Fun Land starts to chase them, The Corinthian catches up and kills the man in cold blood. As Fun Land collapses on the ground, the Corinthian grins confidently and promises that he’ll take care of the two from now on. 20

Morpheus con- fronts The Corinthian. The episode starts with The Corinthian confronting Rose and Jed in their hotel room. He promises to keep them both safe from Morpheus, but Rose knows ex- actly who he is and doesn’t fall for his lies. In fact, Rose decides to leave the hotel and head home. Corinthian offers an al- ternate plan — stay in the hotel and hang about, evading Dream’s ravens and work with him. Downstairs, Dream shows up before Corinthian during his keynote speech. With all the killers asleep, reflecting on their killings, Dream reveals that Corinthian has given them something else to fear. Unfortu- nately, Corinthian has grown in strength since their last meeting, and with Rose Walker at the center of his Dreaming, bringing the walls down between the dreaming and waking world, things don’t pose well for our protagonist. Like an angel and devil on either shoulder, Rose finds herself torn between the Corinthian and Dream, who both try to convince the Vortex to do what they feel is right. Given she has to choose one of them, Rose decides to raise the walls for now and choose her own path. Eventually Dream un-creates The Corinthian, destroying him and taking his skull. Dream promises the other Killers that their dream is over and from this moment onwards they will 21
The Sandman Episode Guide all feel the pain of those they’ve slaughtered, as well as grief for the fallen. Some killers call themselves into the authorities, while others commit suicide. One thing’s for sure though — the Serial Convention is over. With Rose and Jed leaving, en-route to the hospital, Lyta goes into labour. The whole family are there, minus Gilbert who claims he had to "go home". Rose is still concerned though and believes that Dream is going to kill him. Lyta encourages her to take control and suggests killing Dream in order to do so. That night, Rose ends up dreaming again but in doing so, a massive vortex opens and everyone she cares about ends up sucking inside. Dream shows up though and implores her to rationalize, pointing out that she’s caused a great deal of damage — but not anything he can’t solve. However, in order to fix this, Rose needs to die. Or at least the Vortex anyway. Fiddler’s Green shows and stands by Dream’s side. He encourages Rose to walk and visit him, as he embraces his true calling. Disappearing into a flurry of leaves and petals, he transcends this wasteland into a lush, beautiful backdrop of fields and meadows. Unity Kincaid suddenly appears though, deciding to take the Vortex herself. After belittling Dream, she wants to take the power for herself, which appears in the form of a giant ruby heart. With Unity now the rightful Vortex, Unity embraces her calling — sleeping peacefully in her bed but sacrificing herself so Rose can live. Unity believes she should have died a long time ago when Rose tries to argue against this. Before she dies, Unity points out that the father of her child had golden eyes. Golden eyes belonging to Desire. With Rose still alive and choosing to live with Jed and the others, Dream visits Desire in their chambers. Dream berates his sibling and their cunning plan, but Desire bites back, promising that next time they’ll draw blood. Back in his kingdom, Lucienne approaches Dream with big news. There’s a new book that’s appeared in the library written by Rose Walker. Her life is back on track. As for Dream, he’s changed and decided on a new age of Dreaming, including giving Gault wings and her true desire (no pun intended). He’s allowed her to become a Dream just like she wanted, rather than a nightmare. While Dream works, he tasks Lucienne with looking after the Dreaming for the time being. As the episode closes out, we jump back to Hell, where Lucifer is approached by Lord Azazel. The armies of Hell are at Lucifer’s bidding if they choose to attack the Dreaming. Then, by extension, the Waking World. With the Generals demanding action, Lucifer decides to act and do something to bring Morpheus to his knees and make God mad. 22
