Introduction Around the globe, transport is a dangerous industry, and the UAE is no exception. There were 675 deaths on the road in 2015, and the figure actually increased in 2016 to 725. Esitmated road traffic death rate (per 100.000 population) Country 2013 India 16.6 Philippines 10.5 Saudi Arabia 27.4 United Arab Emirates 10.9 United Kingdom 2.9 United States of America 10.6 As a result of the need to improve safety standards on its roads, the UAE government have chosen to promote road safety and is committed to the reduction of traffic accidents and deaths, drawing inspiration from a decade-long global plan developed by the UN Road Safety Collaboration of World Health Organization. There is an apparent intention to implement new legislation for both businesses and the general public alike, and encouraging those in the transport and logistics sector to take a more proactive role in monitoring driver behaviour, vehicle maintenance and load management, and developing skill sets with relevant training. The aim is to keep our roads safe for all users; current statistics highlight that there are 5.5 deaths on the roads per 100,000 people, and the aim is to reduce that to three per 100,000 by 2021 - (UN formula). Around the globe, other governments are introducing or expanding on existing legislation to meet similar goals. In Australia, The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) make it quite clear that everybody, from business owners and managers to employees, contractors and suppliers, is part of the Chain of Responsibility. If a driver is involved in a serious incident, ignorance will not be an adequate defence. How do you ensure that each link in the Chain of Responsibility is meeting their obligations and keeping your business compliant? Everybody with responsibility for the safe operation of your fleet must be aware of their duties and obligations. Resilience EngineeredTM • restrata.com

According to RTA, accidents in Dubai now cost the economy more than Dh1.8 billion annually, with more than 50 per cent of traffic jams being triggered by road mishaps. Dubai saw a 48 per cent expansion of its road network between 2006 and 2014 but the number of vehicles also doubled during the same period from 740,000 to 1.39 million.

A preventative maintenance schedule based on running hours, or tied to specific dates, will ensure you never miss a service, reducing the risk of serious faults when out on the road.
