AFAM ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI VERONA - AOO - PR. U. N. 0000086 DEL 15/01/2021 - P.1 Annex B THE RESIDENCY 7– 20 June 2021 Verona, Italy The residency is promoted by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Verona and, thanks to the collaboration with Canoa Club Verona, is hosted in a symbolic place of the city, the former Dogana di Fiume (River Custom), which together with the Dogana di Terra (Earth Custom), was the historical custom of the city, today a Documentation Center on the river and one of the headquarters of the Canoa Club of Verona. Theme of the residence is EARTH. It considers the Adige River that crosses the city and its historic River Custom House as a privileged space of investigation on the theme from the material point of view (soil, stones and sand as natural and artificial matters, solids and surfaces), political (homeland, land of landing, border), social (ground for meeting, sharing and conflict) to explore the languages of public art and, transversally, of art in the natural environment, for which the Accademia di Belle Arti di Verona has many years of experience in research and production. The residency is aimed at the research and production on site of an artistic work/intervention on the theme EARTH and alternates theoretical and creation moments, visits to institutions and organizations of contemporary art in the area, exploration of the context, meetings with students of the Academy and studio visits with professionals. The residency is connected to the activities and spaces of the Academy and the School of New Tech- nologies for Art, which has its headquarters near the former Dogana di Fiume (River Custom House). At the beginning of the residency artists will attend a new 4 days workshop on “Mapping projections & immersive experiences” with experts coming from New Technolgies for Art School of Accademia di Belle Arti di Verona and from the reasearch center MaxLab of AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts and Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. At the end of the residency there will be a public presentation of the works in which the students of the Academy will also participate. The works remain the property of the artists. It is the responsibility of the artists themselves to set up and dismantle the works before leaving at the end of the residency. If Canoa Club Verona and the artist agree, the artist may donate the work to Canoa Club of Verona for the former Dogana di Fiume (River Custom House) venue and its Documentation Center. Throughout the project, the artists selected for the residency will be called to exchange and interact with a group of young people from the "Z Generation" of Verona, before online by presenting their work, then during the residency by being supported in the production, and after the residency by di- scussing the processes of digitization and distribution of works.
AFAM ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI VERONA - AOO - PR. U. N. 0000086 DEL 15/01/2021 - P.1 VERONA For its urban peculiarities and its artistic and cultural heritage, Verona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Favored by a strategic geographical location, the city played a role of primary importance in Eu- ropean history, as a meeting place of arts and peoples, armies and cultures. A Roman colony in the first century BC, the city enjoyed its moment of maximum splendor under the rule of the Scaligeri in the fourteenth century, and then passed under the rule of Venice in 1405.
AFAM ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI VERONA - AOO - PR. U. N. 0000086 DEL 15/01/2021 - P.1 THE CUSTOM HOUSE It is under the dominion of the Venetian Republic that two customs houses were erected, one on land (Dogana di Terra/Earth Custom House) and one on the river (Dogana di Fiume/River Custom House), one in front of the other, near the center of the city, which testify to the primary role of Verona for trade and the main port, after Venice, of the Serenissima Republic. The Dogana di Fiume (River Custom House) was a warehouse for goods traveling along the river and remained active until the beginning of the twentieth century. It was the burchi - flat-bottomed boats up to thirty meters long - that brought goods from the Far East and the Americas from Venice to Bol- zano city. Then the railway and the spread of the motor replaced river transport. At the end of World War II, a bombing raid burned and destroyed the roof, which has not been rebuilt since then, so much so that it is the last surviving testimony in the city center of the destruction of that period. Since the post-war period, the Dogana di Fiume has become one of the headquarters of the Canoa Club of Verona and today, in addition to remaining a space for sports activities and a symbolic place for the city, it is a documentation center on the river and its history. The adjacent Dogana di Terra, however, is now the seat of the Superintendence of Verona. MORE INFOS HERE Ex Dogana di Fiume, ph Caterina Parona
