OCTOBER, 2021 5782 THE NORTHERN LIGHT On Friday, October 1, we will celebrate Simchat Torah, a holiday of joy and Torah. Our celebration will be a couple of days late according to the Jewish calendar but it will be no less sweet and joyful. Simchat Torah is not in the Bible. It is an invention of the rabbis that emerged in the 10th or 11th century, probably due to the two different Torah reading customs at the time. Reading the Torah used to be completed over the course of three years instead of one. But once the method changed to a yearly cycle, concluding the Torah and restarting it again immediately was considered cause for a party. Rabbi Michael Strassfeld wrote, “Because there was this sense of ‘Oooh, look, here’s a great thing. We’re finishing Deuteronomy and starting Genesis again. We’re showing the cycle is an unending cycle." We come back to the same words every year, but we show up to hear them and learn about them in a different way each year. I’m the same, but I’m different. The Torah is the same, but it’s different. On this holiday, we read the final words of the Torah, Moses’ death, and immediately go to the beginning to read about Creation. There is some sadness at Moses’ dying without going into the Promised Land but then there is great joy in beginning our sacred story again. Everyone is invited to participate with an Aliyah (being called to offer Torah blessings) on Simchat Torah. It reminds us that the Torah is available to everyone. “Where is there in the world a people that love a book so much that they dance around with it? It’s a celebration of the biggest book club in the world,” writes Rabbi David Kalb. I hope you will join your community, outdoors, in-person, for this joyful celebration. Rabbi Janice

OCTOBER, 2021 5782 Aiden Ramsdells' Bar Mitzvah Project I have chosen to work with SHOES THAT FIT as my bar mitzvah project because of the positive impact it has on the lives of kids and because I like shoes! I think all children should be able to have shoes that fit and are comfortable and I want to help that happen. I have elected to support kids from my alma mater, San Benito Elementary School in Atascadero, CA. Please help me to help them by donating (any amount will help) and sharing this page with family and friends. My goal is to raise enough money to buy at least 60 pairs of new shoes at $30 per pair. At the end of the fundraising period, Shoes that Fit will work directly with San Benito Elementary School Staff to purchase new athletic shoes for students in need of this support. You can donate directly to my project by clicking on this link: https://connect.clickandpledge.com/Organization/shoesthatfit/campaign/AidensBarMitzvahProject Or you can write a check to “Shoes That Fit” and send it to COT c/o Jackie Ramsdell. We will send in all funds collected at the end of November. THANK YOU for your generosity! Shoes That Fit is a 501(c)3 non-profit, whose mission is to tackle one of the most visible signs of poverty in America by giving children in need new athletic shoes to attend school with dignity and joy, prepared to learn, play, and thrive. The Blochmans, Cerfs, Goldtrees, Greens, and others came from as far away as Russia to make their homes on the Central Coast, creating the community we recognize today. This exhibit will highlight the stories of constructing the People's Wharf in Avila, the High Holiday services lead from the Grand Mason's building, and the longest- serving Mayor of San Luis Obispo's work to keep anti-semitism out in the 1920s. Opened September 20, 2021
