While we are still wearing masks in worship, we actually sang (behind masks) for the first time in over a year! The congregation is reading their responses. It is feeling a little more like what “normal” used to feel like - in worship and in the world about us. And to top it off, our new Brother in Christ, Sho Kawakita, was baptized by immersion! We still have some work to do on the pump in the baptistry, but Jim Butkus filled the baptismal pool with a garden hose and got it warm enough that it wasn’t too bad at all. (I teased him about it being cold, but it wasn’t really) Experiencing a baptism by immersion was very meaningful to our congregation. While no one seems to remember when the last one was held, it was long enough ago that no one seems to remember when the last one was held! In the Methodist tradition, infants are baptized and later confirmed. In the Baptist tradition, infants are dedicated and later baptized. Then there are those who are new to the faith or who just never were baptized and they get the choice of baptism by “sprinkling” or by “immersion” – and I am blessed to be in a congregation that performs both! And there is just something about a baptism by immersion. I guess that is the Baptist in me that feels that way. And I think everyone in the congregation was moved by the experience. Especially on Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit; when we remember the Spirit of God lighting on Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan River; when we think of God’s words to Jesus and to us – “This is my beloved; the apple of my eye. With him I am well pleased!” We continue to see new faces in worship. The Spirit of God is moving in our midst; moving us to invite our friends and acquaintances; moving us to a deeper sense of spirituality and service; moving us toward the arc of justice, equity, unconditional love, and the peace of Christ that passes all understanding. Spirit of God, continue to move among us. With your wind, blow us into new avenues of service. With your fire, reignite our passion for ministry and mission in this place. Come, Holy Spirit, Come! Peace! Pastor Rick + 1
From the Moderator The Church Council has begun laying plans for the celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the merger that formed Tully United Community Church. Several celebratory events will occur the week of September 12 to 18, 2021 including a memorial walk from the old Baptist and Memorial Churches to our current home. No celebration would be complete without a community dinner and a community worship service. A commemorative booklet will trace our history through words and pictures. Discussions of other possibilities continue including consideration of a community service day with intergenerational teams working on community improvement projects. Please mark this week on your calendar in red and if you have suggestions about other activities to honor our heritage and community contributions, email them to tullyunitedcc@gmail.com.
