January 2021 Page 3 A word from the President ... What an amazing time to serve as President! Covid crisis, masks, separation, isolation, quarantines, families enduring food and TP needs, vaccine tiers, and political change. Opportunity for anxiety, depression and fear to reign. And yet...our 529-household community is experiencing many of our greatest days! Our Board has transformed our community in the last four years...building improvements and beautification, IT and security improvements, fiscal stewardship, parking lot resurfacing, lighting, and safety accommodations, and persuasion for our city to provide traffic safety bumps. A great time to serve as President! This past year has been characterized by adjustments to be faithful to our greater community health and safety concerns, resulting in pools without furniture, restrictions on usage, absence of social gatherings, and creative “drive-through” celebrations. You...we...have wonderfully responded with cooperation and understanding. A great time to serve as President! Thank you! Photos by Dave Going into 2021, let’s make three commitments to one another: 1...ENJOY! Realize we are in a protected environment, most of us interacting with the greater Fort Lauderdale community only as necessary for work, shopping, and worship. We have a helpful staff, many volunteers, a great library, and safe and sanitized facilities. Our grounds are beautiful. Our neighbors are nice. Enjoy...this time and this place. 2...ENCOURAGE! We are all aware of fear factors. And many of us have compromised health and are a bit older. But we can encourage one another...greetings, phone calls, doing errands for one another, and just plain neighborly checking in on one another. Celebrate our community privilege. Encourage...the very word implies the follow-up...”one another”. 3...EMBRACE! “It is what it is”. “This, too, shall pass”. Stay safe. Wash your hands. Wear your masks. Practice six-foot distancing. Be vigilant. Get the vaccine. Hang in there. This is what community does. This is who we are. We will once again enjoy Mainlands 1 and 2 to the fullest. Page 4 January 2021 2020 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Notwithstanding the complications of the Covid-19 Pandemic placed on our community and the world, this Board of Directors managed to accomplish much while maintaining a holding pattern on life in general. We started out well enough with preparations going forward to conduct the 2020 Census which keeps Mainlands 1 and 2 certified for being a 55+ community. This project was chaired by Marie Vales and door-to-door distribution of forms was done by Pam Bushnell and Nancy Major. The Reserve Study was approved and chaired by Nancy Major and is used as a valuable tool in ensuring our community has the funds to maintain or replace the elements present in all buildings and areas of our common grounds. The Committee chaired by Ruth Richard to review and or revise our outdated By-laws and Restrictions continued throughout 2020 and finished their work on both documents in the month of December. The revised editions, which included a proxy to allow for voting, were mailed to all homeowners and a meeting was scheduled for January, 2021 to conclude this very important project. In March of 2020, Covid-19 made the cancellation of all normal activities necessary. Brunches, dinner dances, Monday movies, entertainment, weekly Bible classes and games, the volunteer party and Mainlander deliveries were all placed on hold. Broward County mandated that all pools be closed if certain requirements could not be met. Since we were unable to provide a monitor for the pools during normal operating hours, we were restricted to only allowing the pools to be open if we removed all seating from the deck, locked the washrooms as they could not be sanitized after each use, and posted signs that said no children or guests were allowed in the pools at any time. In May, Ruth Richard took on the task of writing a weekly Blast to residents which provided information on Covid-19 Testing Sites and where free Food Distribution Sites were located. This Blast was emailed to all whose addresses we had and hard copies were placed in all bulletin cabinets for those who did not have access to the internet. This Blast became an important and welcomed means of communicating with residents about all that was going on in the community. There were 36 Weekly Blasts done during the year due to the diligence of Ruth and the input of Board Members and residents. We instituted the drive-through Barbeques for July 4th and Labor Day since we were unable to host our normal events and meals were either picked up or delivered to many grateful residents. We took advantage of the lack of activities by having all parking lots repaved and restriped. We hired an IT company to connect our buildings with internet and security cameras. This company also cleaned up our tangle of computer wiring, updated our phone system and increased our file back-up capability.
January 2021 Page 5 We purchased new lateral file cabinets and purged all homeowner’s files of unnecessary papers that were cluttering most all of them. In October, we allowed 2 Bible classes and the Monday Movies to begin again under the rules of Covid-19 where the 6’ social distancing and the wearing of face masks must be maintained. In November, Manuel Thomas chaired a Food Drive where the concept of “Give if you can, take if you need it” was established. Homeowners were extremely generous in their donation of non-perishable items and two days were dedicated to giving out 37 large bags of food to residents. The Board approved the hiring of a management company to take over the handling of the application process, the monthly maintenance payments and the violations in the community that require more attention than can be adequately taken care of by volunteers. It was felt that this was an important step to take for the future success of Mainlands 1 and 2 and worth giving it a try. The last official improvement to be made was the purchase of a pop-up Covid-19 Changing Room Tent to accommodate those using the pools who wanted to change into dry clothing before heading home! We honored our two employees who were leaving on December 31st and know that Mary Lou McMillen and Pennie Winland will be missed by all. Their work has been much appreciated. So, at the conclusion of this very strange year, many thanks go to my fellow Board Members for their continued service to Mainlands 1 and 2 and for all they did to make this community a better place to live.
