Greenie Update: It was with sadness that we learned our ‘Greenie’ editor Megan was moving out of the district. As the communication medium for the Waiau Pa Clarks Beach Business Association, the Greenie is such an integral part of the Clark’s Beach/Waiau Pa area that a group of us felt we simply had to keep it alive. It may come as a surprise for readers of the magazine to know that it will take 8 of us to maintain what Megan did. We would also like to acknowledge Felicity Reber who works steadfastly looking after all things accounting on behalf of the Business Association. Fortunately Felicity is NOT moving and will keep the rest of us on track. Your new team is: Acting Editor Annette Lusk ann@sustainable-edge.co.nz Accounts Felicity Reber accounts@thegreenie.co.nz Advertising Linda Jones citropia@farmside.co.nz Community contributors Ros Campbell spoilt4c@xtra.co.nz Community information Julie de Boer julz.deboer@gmail.com Business articles Ann Andrews ann@annandrews.co.nz Distribution Jeanette Guy jeanetteguy4k@gmail.com Graphic designer To be confirmed Megan will still be helping us in the background until we are able to find a new editor. The Long White Ride By Toni Dolan (story and photos adapted from Stuff) Our very own Joanna Sharpe has just completed a cycle challenge from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to raise awareness of bowel cancer. She completed the more than 2,000km ride in under a week. Joanna is expected to have set a Guin- ness World record after becoming the first woman to complete the “Long White Ride” in which participants cycle the length of New Zealand almost non-stop. The reason for doing this was to raise awareness of bowel cancer and encourage people to get checked. Joanna had a bowel cancer scare herself, but caught it early, but her good cycling friend, Britt Mill, sad- ly passed away last year. The two cyclists formed a special bond and Britt had hoped to join Joanna on this ride. Joanna says she spent a lot of time on the ride thinking of Britt and believed she was with her in spirit throughout the journey. Joanna started pedaling from Cape Reinga at 6.30am on Monday 1 February and made it to Bluff at 4.19pm on the following Sunday. She squeezed in a 45 to 60 minute sleep each day and spent up to 20 hours in the saddle at a time. Only 4 cyclists have completed this ride and now we can add our very own Joanna from Clarks Beach to the mix and, as previ- ously said, the only female to ever do this. Congratulations Joanna. 18

Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire & Emergency Services Brigade Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire Brigade https://www.facebook.com/waiaupafire Call log There have been 19 calls since the last report. There were 5 Fire and Property and 14 Medical calls. This year has seen us busy with 26 calls 8 fire / property and 18 medical calls. A helicopter landed at the Clarks Beach Yacht Club to transfer a patient to hospital. Karaka has had an ATV and a car versus car accident. Both accidents used our First Responders to treat injuries. Home Fires Did you know a house fire can kill you in less than three minutes? In a fire, you’ll probably be scared and disorientated. Toxic smoke might make it hard to breathe and see clearly. You will only have 1 or 2 minutes from the sounding of the smoke alarm to when your life is seriously threatened by fire or smoke. Build your escape plan https://www.escapemyhouse.co.nz/. Medical Response St John has an agreement with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. This means fire stations person- nel may arrive prior to ambulance personnel. Instances such as heart attacks are life threat- ening and the earlier the intervention the better. Earlier intervention aids the recovery process considerably.
