The Pavilion The Future Now Pavilion is a large-scale robotically built earthen structure based on research into rapid clay formations. It is built in the park of the Casa Firjan in Rio de Janeiro – Botafogo using locally sourced clay of different natural colors and is assembled with the in-situ fabricator (IF): one of the world’s first mobile construction robots. The result is a large scale pavilion made from up to 40 tons of material within a building area of 10x10 meters. Reusable Building Material from a Local Clay Pit Using only reusable local clay that is ground and mixed with sand and a cement-free sustainable additive to enhance strength, the robotically controlled construction technique demonstrates a radical take on sustainable construction whilst expanding the aesthetic vocabulary of architecture. One of the First Context-Aware In-Situ Fabricator The in-situ fabricator is one of the first context-aware mobile construction robot for fabricating directly on construction sites. Its integrated on-board sensing and computation system enables the autonomous repositioning and adaptation of fabrication data according to unforeseen material behavior and fabrication-related tolerances – precisely translating the virtual design into the real world. As a generic robotic platform to which different end-effectors can be attached, the IF is the first step towards building entire buildings by digitally controlled mobile machinery directly on site. Gramazio Kohler Research together with the Agile and Dexterous Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich developed the mobile construction robot in-situ fabricator (IF) as part of their collaboration within the Partner Presentation The Future Now Pavilion by Insight Architecture & ETH Zurich at the UIA 2020 Rio de Janeiro NCCR DFAB research program. 10
The Occasion: UIA 2020 Rio The International Union of Architects UIA organizes every three years its world congress in a different city. In 2020, Rio de Janeiro will host the 27th World Congress of Architects, the “UIA 2020 Rio”, July 19th-23rd, one of the world's most important architecture forums. The congress will be the largest event in Rio de Janeiro since the Olympics. It is expected to receive about 15,000 architects, urbanists, engineers and policy makers from around the world. “All the worlds. Just one world. Architecture 21” is the event’s topic and aims to reflect contemporary issues in urban areas. The Master of Advanced Studies ETH Run by Gramazio Kohler Research The Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture and Digital Fabrication is an intensive twelve-month postgraduate program run jointly by Master of Advanced Studies and Gramazio Kohler Research. The curriculum combines two of the most rapidly developing fields in architecture: digital and robotic fabrication. It equips students with the technical, intellectual and artistic skills to master the digital chain from computational design to full scale building tasks. The second term of the MAS program is split into two consecutive full-scale design and fabrication projects. The group of students works collaboratively on all aspects from computational design to the digital and Building ETH, Faculty of Architecture; Team Digital Fabrication robotic fabrication of their one-to-one scale structure.
