From the Pastor's Desk
                                John The Baptist on 63
I saw John the Baptist again the other day. And once again, people swore at him. There he was with his
bright green vest and his bright green hard hat holding a sign that said STOP on one side and SLOW on
the other. Roads were being repaired – low places being made higher and high places being made lower
and rough places being made smoother – all for our benefit. Why, when someone is helping such a good
thing to happen, is he treated so poorly? The road is for everyone. Everyone has to stop or slow down.
Why do some take it so personally? Why do some feel that road construction should only happen when
they are not around? Why do some think they should be exempt from the inconvenience of the world
being made better?

John the Baptist was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord. Makes His
paths straight.” John gave the same message to all people, from humble to great, but some people were so
important that John’s call to repentance was personal. For some people, it is all about them, and any
challenge that indicates they are not the bright center of the universe is resented. We have always had
them with us, and we probably always will.

As the driver got out of his car and berated the John the Baptist of US Highway 63, I felt like coming to
John’s defense and saying to the hemorrhoid with a strong opinion, “That’s right, pal. The federal
government, the state highway commission, the public utility, and the construction company all knew
that you would be here at this precise moment. Months ago, they called a meeting and said: “At 2:30 pm
on a Thursday near Trego, Emil Slobbowitz wants to get to the Rice Lake Menards faster than AJ Foyt.
Let’s mess with his mind!” Of course, I didn’t. ‘Emil’ looked big and scary and humorless, and I felt like
making retirement someday. But when ‘John’ turned the sign to SLOW, I did take a weird pleasure in
driving around ‘Emil’s’ car before he had a chance to run back into it. But he passed me at a pretty good
clip well before I reached the Mobil station as he saluted me with the universal salute that indicates an IQ
of 1.

‘John’ is a good person simply doing his job to make life safer and better for everybody – why do so many
people take it personally. It cost the first John the Baptist his head. Why? STOP signs, speed limits, road
construction, utility improvements, and even mask mandates are for everyone equally and make the world
better and safer. What is so personal about that?

Do I have an intrinsic desire to be happy? Do I see everybody fulfilling their niche in society to make
society a better place, and because I see so many people faithfully doing their job, am I happier than
others? I appreciate the Walmart greeter. I appreciate the city worker. I appreciate the volunteers at the
food pantries and at Habitat for Humanity. I hold politicians in high regard, too. There are tons of people
simply doing their jobs, myself included. Most people are trying to make a better world, a better
community, a better workplace. There are John the Baptists in all of them.

I say God bless them.

In Christ,

Pastor Joel

Council Notes
Let all that we do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14
Council met on May 10, 2021, and the following are some of the main items discussed.

$4203.64 was donated via the Lenten special offering folders. Council had voted earlier to send
this special offering to Luther Park Bible Camp. A very generous donor is matching all
donations to the camp during 2020 and 2021 up to $500,000, so our gifts have a double
impact. Thanks for your continuing support.

Council voted to make the wearing of face coverings optional on church premises effective
immediately.

Before starting the lighting project for the sanctuary, there was interest in replacing the pew
cushions. That project was put on hold to get the lights done first so that we would not damage
the new cushions with the lighting construction. Council approved the formation of a task force
to reopen that process and solicit proposals and pricing for the cushions. This task force will be
operating in conjunction with the Music & Worship Committee. There is an estimated $4000
balance in the Sanctuary Improvement Fund after completing the lighting, which can be used
toward this.

Considerable time was devoted to discussing our recommendations on allocating some of the
surplus funds we now have due to COVID relief funds we received in 2020 and 2021. Some of
those funds have already been allocated by the council. Council decided to propose the
balance of the allocations to the congregation for approval at our Congregational Meeting on
July 25, 2021, following the 10 AM worship service.Details of that proposal will be published in
the information we receive in the 30-day letter for the Annual Meeting.

As you know, we have been working on formulating a long-range plan for some time. That
process derailed due to COVID and is now back on track.Three informational meetings were
scheduled to gain more comments and input from members. This will be another item for
consideration at our July congregational meeting. We will have a written ballot regarding the
long-range plans and will vote yes or no on an item-by-item basis. The recommendation is each
idea needs the support of 60% minimum votes for inclusion in the final plan. To be clear, this
will be a list of goals and overall objectives. However, each item included in the long-range plan
will still need congregational approval on an item-by-item basis once details and specific costs
are determined.

                                         Simply Giving
With the Simply Giving Program in place at First Lutheran, some congregation members have
elected to use this electronic transfer opportunity. It saves you trying to remember if you have
written a check or turned it in your envelope. You select when the funds are withdrawn each
month and the amount each time. If you need to make changes to your Simply Giving, you
can log into your account and make the changes, or you can see Jeannette for a form to sign,
and I will make any changes you direct. For additional information, please contact Jeannette in
the church office.

Memorial & Endowment Notes:
Plant your seeds now and trust in the Lord that these seeds will bear

fruit even when you are gone.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever
sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your
heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

We are truly blessed with the ability to provide financial support to so many worthy projects, and
individuals, through both the Endowment and Memorial Funds.
As a reminder the FLC Endowment Fund was established to receive memorial or honorary gifts that
are invested in perpetuity. That means we can use the annual earnings to provide funds while the
fund continues to grow. The Fund has provided for over $10,000 in just this last year solely from
earnings. Please consider a gift to the endowment fund. It will be a gift that will keep giving to many
for years to come. Flyers can be found in any of the pews or in the church office. There are very
informational.

The Memorial Fund continues to receive gifts that can be spent currently to meet the special needs
of the congregation not being met by the church’s annual budget.
2021-2022 funding requests and forms can be directed to the committee through the church
office. Requests should be turned in 10 days before the quarterly meeting so the committee can
review and understand.

Northwest Synod of Wisconsin - Synod Assembly Update
Five Main Resolutions Passed at Assembly
Hunger Resolution: In addition to the support of food pantries and meals, the assembly
encourages all congregations to take time on a regular basis to call awareness to the problem and
collect a special offering, and to set aside a Sunday to reflect on the problem and bring awareness.
We set a goal of $1,000,000 by Synod Assembly 2024.

Racial Justice Resolution: Basically with the realization that we are a primarily White
denomination and our Synod is predominately White, we resolved that the synod offer at least one
Racial Justice/Anti-Racism Training workshop every year and recommend that all rostered leaders
attend and that church staffs and lay leaders set aside a time each year to reflect on how racism,
implicit bias, and privilege impact their own life together.
LGBTQIA+ Resolution: Discussing suicide rates with these individuals and the prevalence of
bullying ask at least 25% of the congregations to intentionally discuss the process of what it means
to be a Reconciling in Christ congregation by the end of 2022, realizing that some congregations
will choose not to participate. If a congregation does it is asked that it be reported to the bishop.
We should also work towards inclusivity.

Creation Care Resolution: This was to support energy conservation and recycling. It encourages
congregations to celebrate a four-week Season of Creation in the fall with the synod providing
worship resources and provide confirmation curriculum.
Gender Justice Resolution: This discusses the inequality of compensation for women pastors,
lack of women senior pastor positions, inappropriate comments to female pastors, and sexual
harassment. The synod will curate and provide training materials for synod staff, candidacy
committee, call committees, councils, and congregations on equality for compensation and
benefits. The synod will also provide materials and assistance to congregations regarding sexual
harassment.

To learn more about these resolutions, to watch the introductions, discussions, or votes of these
resolutions please go to the Synod Website: http://nwswi.org/2021-synod-assembly

AN EVANGELICAL MINUTE
                       Hope Springs Eternal
For me, our monthly copy of Living Lutheran is one of the most informational and thankful
gifts as a member of our congregation. For in it, I learn of the myriad of ways in which today's
ELCA churches are carrying out the work of Our God. The people are caring for others with
love. Men and women are pastors. You learn of worship programs here and abroad, helping
people in so many different and caring ways.

We recently received the latest letter from our ELCA Ministries wherein, if we are able, we can
join in to help support some ministries featured in our magazines. Thus, because this came
to mind, I include this, for I understand that due to the COVID-19 outbreak, their efforts have
been of greater importance.

We don't forget our ongoing appeals here in Hayward and thus at First Lutheran: the local
Hayward Food Shelf has experience extra heavy need due to economic pressures, including
job losses, volunteer needs abound (both around our church and locally), and we just
completed a large effort by our youth to gather items for Personal Care Kits to send overseas
to help others. How proud we are of our Youth! We can be on the lookout for opportunities
to be of help regularly. There's a phrase our greater church has had for some time now that
says it all, and so I'll close with it:
God's Work. Our Hands.

Heavenly Father, we are so blessed, and because of this, we want to do all we can and, with
Your help, be there for others in need. For it is only right for us to love others as You have
loved us.

In Christ, Amen

                                                        To my First Lutheran family,
Your prayers have once again carried me through what could
have been a dark time, but due to your love and support and
God’s blessings, it was not – and I thank you so much. Thank
you for the many cards, flowers, rides, phone calls, emails,
and Facebook messages. I consider myself blessed to
worship in the company of so many kind people. Thank you
to the staff, my family, congregation, and friends. My surgery
was successful and as I write this, I am down to one week and
one day of radiation and have done very well. May you all be
                                     blessed.
In prayerful appreciation, Carol Mooney Williamson

backs are made and need to be tied and sew the edges. Material needs to be cut in squares to use for
tops or sew large pieces together for the backs. Plenty to do. Great way to reach out to other people
 throughout the world.

Anyone who wants to donate material (it needs to be washable and not a light color) can leave it in the
quilting closet. Old sheets are great as long as they are not white. Anyone can come in and get material
to work on at home. Thank you to all the quilters for their faithfulness.

Invitation: Where are you?
A message from your Youth & Education Director
Have you ever wondered what the purpose for our narthex, our nave, and our
sanctuary meant? How about the meaning of good works? Without much surprise,
Martin Luther wrote a sermon on these questions. The purpose of each part of a
church can also shed focus on our Christian faith's life choices and actions.
In biblical times, churches were less of a building and more of a tent or tabernacle. A moveable
place for worship, sacrifice, and blessings. There were three main parts: the courtyard, the holy
place, and the holy of holies. The locations or areas of these places were, historically, only allowed
access by certain people. The courtyard is the area of listening. Anyone is welcome in this area. The
holy place is for the select 'members,' those offering a sacrifice or paying the dues. The holy of
holies was only for high priests. It was the most holy place, closest to God. In Exodus, the holy of
holies is the Ark of The Covenant.

The sections would be a narthex, a nave, and a sanctuary in today's church buildings. The narthex is
the gathering and fellowship place as one walks through the doors of the church. The nave is the
pew area, where people sit and worship; we tend to call this area the sanctuary. However, the
sanctuary is the altar, the place where pastors give the words and sacraments.

As Luther explains, one can think of these parts in the context of their own home. What types of
people do you allow in each of these parts: the front yard, the house's main rooms, your bedroom?
The front yard is where people stop and ask for directions, delivery people drop off packages, or a
new neighbor introduces themselves to the neighborhood. In this area of your home, you meet
new people and interact with the community. This is the narthex of the church. This is where
visitors come to meet new people and venture a feel of the church atmosphere. Those in the
narthex look to the external elements of worship, people, and activities. The narthex is the
appearance and spectator arena.

Our new neighbors' invitation comes to our kitchen tables for a more personal conversation, maybe
over a meal. This is the nave of our church. Receptive engagement transpires to this level. The
invitation from the wondering in the narthex to the nave extends from the works of God. People
entering this space come to seek the peace and gentleness of God's love. Here, we start on the
road to heaven. In the nave, sinners realize that they are, in fact, sinners. The appearance of the
outside does not matter. The matters of the heart begin of God's work. When we invite someone
into our homes, we hold comfort in this person's value and have an eagerness to develop a
relationship with them.

Our bedrooms. The private placement of our personal belongings. The place that we only allow
access to those we are closest to. There is a sacred space where we are most vulnerable. The
sanctuary, or altar, of a church holds this same sacredness. The altar is where the Holy Spirit is
given to us, the sacrament of Holy Communion and Baptism are performed. Luther describes the
sanctuary as the place "where we deny ourselves" and give ourselves to God in its entirety.
There are people in our lives that fit every place of the church. The invitation and relationship
development heightens this experience. A welcoming conversation in the narthex can lead to an
embraced prayer-sharing moment in the nave, through relational development and a deepening
connection to God, neighbor, and life. A friendly hello can lead a stranger to a family member of
Christ.
An invitation is a powerful task. When we welcome and invite someone to our space, we make a
personal investment in them. When it comes to church space, an invitation is extended in multiple
steps. It starts with an event, asking a neighbor to a cookout or potluck in the churchyard. As the
relationship builds, the invite turns to a special worship service. "Will you come to Easter breakfast
and worship?" The movement from the narthex into the nave. A small step accompanying both
parts. These actions can take some time to build. Relationships take care and nurture. The deeper
the connection gets, the more God moves in and through the people. Finally, this neighbor is a
friend that kneels next to you every Sunday morning while receiving the sacrament of Holy
Communion. Whether in the narthex, nave, or sanctuary, the extension of our relationship with God
comes to others in the form of invitation.

Blessings~
Tiffany Chipman

Women of First Lutheran

It was only yesterday we celebrated the New Year, but to me, June is the month that God makes
all things new. From the theme song from the Broadway musical "Carousel," "June is busting
out all over," written and composed by Rogers & Hammerstein. Our trees are bursting out with
new green leaves, the robins are back, and the mornings are full of the music of the songbirds and
the lakes with the sound of the loons. Our wonderful God opens the rivers, lakes bring back the
birds and flowers, and gives us longer, warmer days of summer. We are excited to get into the
greenhouses and see the plants as we prepare our gardens, plant the seeds, and watch them grow
and wait for the harvest. June is the new year for me in Wisconsin. The excitement is in the air
after the winter of darkness and confinement.

We at First Lutheran had a Refurbishing Jubilee during the dark days of COVID and the long
winter months; we nourished our church, preparing it for the new year when we could sow the
seeds on "good soil" and wait for the harvest. We have done so much here so that we could better
serve this congregation and our community. We have a new state-of-the-art kitchen that serves
and enabled us to offer take-out meals. The offices have new flooring. The computer systems so we
can Zoom and share our services online, through Facebook. We lit up the sanctuary with new lights
and new letters and symbols in the Narthex, welcoming guests. And during this time, we sent care
packages, and the quilters made 14 quilts to send to Lutheran World Relief. Many of the ladies
worked at home and made and tied the quilts, they made blankets for the hospital nurseries,
prayer shawls were knit and handed out to those grieving or going through tough times, and the
youth sent dry goods to the food pantries. We also hosted some of the days for COVID
inoculations. This was our winter of refurbishing and service.

God has led us through the dark days of winter and COVID, and now God leads us forth with new
energy and into June. First Lutheran is ready to serve God's people by opening our doors and being
a welcoming church, as God gives us this new month of June with the promise of long hazy, crazy
days of summer. We pray that He gives us a healthy community and our energy back to welcome
strangers, friends, and family. We thank our God for June. It is planting time. We can plant seeds of
love and welcome and nourish our guests with God's Word, and we pray for the harvest of healthy
fruit planted on "good soil" in God's garden. May God bless this planting season,

Linda Gordon Pres. FLCW

                          "Day 1" Radio Ministry
“Day 1”, a voice of mainline Christian Churches, presents messages by
clergy representing mainline Christian faiths, including those of the
ELCA. Peter Wallace, host for each broadcast, facilitates discussion with
clergy on timely topics. This radio ministry reaches our shut-ins, visitors
to the area, and others for whom regular worship and Church affiliation
are not a part of their daily lives. The cost per broadcast is $30.
We have First Lutheran members sponsor the “Day 1” weekly segments
on radio station WRLS-FM (92.3). These segments air at 8:30am every
Sunday. The sponsorship of a broadcast may be in honor of a person,
or special occasion, or in memory of a loved one and is open to all.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
                               God's work. Our hands.
We are a Church that is deeply rooted—and always being made new.
If anyone is in Christ...
We are deeply rooted. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is still comparatively new as a
Church body, and yet our roots are much deeper than our 25 years together. The taproot of our
life extends through the histories of predecessor Churches in the United States, through the
formative witness of the 16th century evangelical reformers and their confessional writings, to the
Scriptures and the word of Christ. Our life is in Jesus Christ. We are deeply rooted in his word of
forgiveness and the promises of God’s steadfast love and mercy. The word of Christ dwells in us
richly. God nourishes us as one body in Jesus Christ with companions from around the globe who
meet us at Christ’s table of grace.
…there is a new creation
We are being made new every day. In Jesus Christ we are not unchanged. What God does in Christ
is as radical as the death and resurrection of baptism, where new creatures in Christ rise to live “no
longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.” God is bringing that new
creation to life among us in the ministry of reconciliation. In that service we no longer see each
other as we did before. We are no longer strangers, competitors or enemies to each other. We are
beloved companions in one body, restored to a communion where the rich diversity of our
experiences, wisdom and abilities serve the common good in Christ. The new creation in Christ
rises to life among us every day.

Our Deepest Sympathies

Lucille J. Ackley, age 84, of Hayward, WI passed away surrounded by the
love of her family on Monday, April 26, 2021 at Fairview Southdale Hospital
                        in Edina, MN.

Lucille was born July 21, 1936, in Ashland, WI the daughter of James and
Helen (Gorud) Hamblin. She was raised in Hayward, WI where she
attended school. She graduated in 1954 from Hayward High School where she was very active in
all things musical, band, choir accompanist, and girls ensemble. She also earned the honor of
being valedictorian of her class. Lucille went on to college at the University of Wisconsin, Superior,
and earned a degree in education. After college, she returned to Hayward to work as a teacher for
several years. On August 6, 1957, Lucille was joined in marriage to Florian “Fritz” Ackley in
Hayward. Fritz was playing professional baseball and Lucille would travel with him when she
wasn’t teaching. After their fifth child in five years was born, Lucille became a homemaker while
Fritz continued his baseball career. In 1967, they purchased and began operating Chip-A-Flo
Lodge on the Chippewa Flowage. They operated the resort for 13 years and over that time Lucille
was also a substitute teacher for the Hayward School System. Lucille’s main passion in her life was
her family. She lived for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her kind heart,
patience, willingness to listen, and strong Christian faith made her children feel blessed to have
her as a mother. She was so positive, she made everyone she met feel important. Lucille loved
dancing and filled their home with laughter. As it said in her senior yearbook and is still true today,
“Lucille always let her light shine without turning the spotlight on herself”.

Lucille is survived by her six children, David (Carol) Ackley of Hayward, Kathy (Chuck) Groth of
Hayward, Douglas (Lois) Ackley of Oshkosh, WI, Sheila Dubois of Superior, WI, Sharon (Dan) Shea
of Superior, WI, and Janna (Hugh) Duffy of Center City, MN; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Fritz.

A funeral service celebrating Lucille’s life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7th, at First
Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Bacon officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the
time of service at the church on May 7th. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in
Hayward.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, PO Box 346, Hayward, WI 54843.
