CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT IN NEW ZEALAND Industry Focus Construction management is a sub-specialisation of Civil Engineering that prepares the building and construction managers to plan, control and co- ordinate civil engineering or building projects, and the resources and people involved. Construction managers are supposed to be skilled at building methods and materials, interpreting drawings & architectural plans, understanding building standards, quantitative knowledge, understanding quality control systems, administrative and business skills. Employment for construction managers can be based on their degrees in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Sciences and Quantity surveying qualifications. There is a high demand for construction managers in New Zealand as they come under the skills shortage list. Construction is the fifth largest sector in New Zealand’s economy, employing just over a quarter of a million people. Employment in construction has grown consistently since 2012. This has been a result of a severe shortage of residential housing and heavy government investment in infrastructure to modernise existing assets. Construction is one of the highest paying sectors in New Zealand with individuals earning between $80K-$170K per year. Great career-building opportunities and good pay make construction management a promising career in New Zealand. You can study UG & PG degrees in Construction related subjects at institutions like - the University of Auckland, AUT University, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington and a number of Institutes of Technology in New Zealand.
