Lower Grammar Stage, Grades K-2

Overview: Grades K-2 will see the greatest shift as they begin to fully embrace the Catholic classical
approach. The most notable change will be in the area of social studies as we begin to have students
understand history in chronological order, focusing on western civilization and salvation history.
Language acquisition in the lower grades, we will integrate a phonics approach. Additional changes
in year one are a greater emphasis on classical literature, handwriting for grades 1-4,
implementation of Saxon Math K- 3, Latin Instruction PreK-5, and Sacred Music Pre K- 8. Classical
Music Appreciation for Grades K- 2, along with Art will focus on the historical timeline for each
grade. Technology class for Grades PreK-2 will reinforce google classroom skills for remote,
distance learning. All technology usage will be Christocentric, virtuous and thoughtful. In all
grades, students will see an increase in devotional activities, and an increase in activities to form
them in the Catholic faith to help create in them a sense of wonder and awe so they begin to

Year One: Grades 3-5, 2020-2021

Overview: Grades 3-5 will see a moderate shift. This will be most evident in the areas of
History and Literature. Each grade level will focus on a specific period of history and this

whole pieces of literature to fully engage in students thoughtful examinations of those
writings. Classical whole works of literature have been introduced, however the Reading

corresponding grammar, spelling and vocabulary workbooks. The new History Curriculum,
The Story of Civilization has been implemented. Classical Music Appreciationfor Grades 3-
5 along with Art will focus on the historical timeline for each grade. Saxon Math has been

devotional activities, and an increase in activities to form them in the Catholic faith to help

Year Two: 3-5, 2021-2020
Upper Grammar Stage

Overview: Grades 3-5 will see an increased immersion into the classical curriculum.
Grammar will become an integral part of the curriculum as students begin to analyze and
diagram sentences. Memorization of math facts becomes an important skill as students grow
in understanding of concepts. The Saxon Math Program, which focuses on memorization of
math facts and “spiraled learning” will be implemented in grades 4-5. Science will inspire a
deeper connection to everything as God’s creation and thus students will observe the world
through that lens. The Science curriculum will transition to Nature Studies focusing on God’s
creation, and will be supported by Anna Botsford Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study,
which contains instructions for the teacher on how to approach nature studies (pp. 1-24) as
well as lessons and other resource materials. Memoria Press nature studies curriculum
materials will also be incorporated to help guide the teacher in lesson planning. The Delta
Science Modules will provide hands-on experiments and related workbook activities. This
combination will provide an observation and experimental approach to the study of nature
that is deeply human. The Reading Street 2007, LA series will be replaced with whole work
of classical literature, and supplemented by LA curriculum from Memoria Press. Technology
class will also transition to oral tradition/ recitation class, which places greater emphasis on
language acquisition and handwriting; two critical development milestones in grades 3-4.
Studies show that handwriting facilitates language acquisition and critical thinking.
Technology class will continue to be taught in grades 5-8. All technology usage will be
Christocentric, virtuous and thoughtful. Key boarding skills will be taught in grade 5 with an
emphasis on typing written compositions.
