The Educational Plan of St. Theresa School in the Classical Tradition A Catholic Classical School in the Diocese of Bridgeport 55 Rosemond Terrace Trumbull, CT 06611 Anno Domini 2020
Saint Theresa School “Focused on Christ as we seek Truth, Beauty and Goodness” Michelle C. Rowe, Curriculum Director Catholic Classical 3 Year Transition Plan 2020-2023 The foundation for the new Catholic Classical curriculum is based on The Educational Planof St. Jerome Classical School and supported by the ICLE. The framework for the three yeartransition plan is based on Associate Superintendent, Stacie Stueber’s outline. The goal is that by the end of the three year transition plan 2023-2024, Saint Theresa School will be afully integrated Catholic Classical school/ academy. Year One: K-2, 2020-2021 Lower Grammar Stage, Grades K-2 Overview: Grades K-2 will see the greatest shift as they begin to fully embrace the Catholic classical approach. The most notable change will be in the area of social studies as we begin to have students understand history in chronological order, focusing on western civilization and salvation history. Language acquisition in the lower grades, we will integrate a phonics approach. Additional changes in year one are a greater emphasis on classical literature, handwriting for grades 1-4, implementation of Saxon Math K- 3, Latin Instruction PreK-5, and Sacred Music Pre K- 8. Classical Music Appreciation for Grades K- 2, along with Art will focus on the historical timeline for each grade. Technology class for Grades PreK-2 will reinforce google classroom skills for remote, distance learning. All technology usage will be Christocentric, virtuous and thoughtful. In all grades, students will see an increase in devotional activities, and an increase in activities to form them in the Catholic faith to help create in them a sense of wonder and awe so they begin to recognize Truth, Beauty and Goodness.

Year One: Grades 3-5, 2020-2021 Upper Grammar Stage Overview: Grades 3-5 will see a moderate shift. This will be most evident in the areas of History and Literature. Each grade level will focus on a specific period of history and this becomes the anchor to which literature pieces are tied. For example, students will no longer use a traditional textbook for reading assignments which often contain only excerpts, but whole pieces of literature to fully engage in students thoughtful examinations of those writings. Classical whole works of literature have been introduced, however the Reading Street Series 2007, Scott Foresman continues to be used as a “textbook reader” with corresponding grammar, spelling and vocabulary workbooks. The new History Curriculum, The Story of Civilization has been implemented. Classical Music Appreciationfor Grades 3- 5 along with Art will focus on the historical timeline for each grade. The greatest shift may be seen in literature pieces read, and discussed as teachers will try to enhance students’ ability to interpret literature through careful reading, understanding and insight. Whole, classical works of literature with an emphasis on reading primary documents has begun to be implemented as well as the new History Curriculum, The Catholic Textbook Project in Grades 6-7. Sacred Music instruction along with an Introduction to music theory is also being implemented. *Edmentum/ exact path, personalized computer based learning will be used for math and reading skills and assessment only in technology class or for a maximum of 45 mins/ 1 class period per week in grades 6-8. All technology usage will be Christocentric, virtuous and thoughtful. Art class will focus on the corresponding historical topics and themes assigned to each grade. Memoria Press nature studies curriculum materials will also be incorporated to help guide the teacher in lesson planning. Technology class will also transition to oral tradition/ recitation class which places greater emphasis on language acquisition and handwriting; two critical development milestones in the lower grammar stages. Studies show that handwriting 13
facilitates language acquisition and critical thinking. Lastly, there will be a gradual shift from the Reading Street 2007, reading program to Sing, Spell, Read and Write, Pearson (Christian books), with greater focus on Fairy and FolkTales, Rhymes and Verse. Year Two: 3-5, 2021-2020 Upper Grammar Stage Overview: Grades 3-5 will see an increased immersion into the classical curriculum. Grammar will become an integral part of the curriculum as students begin to analyze and diagram sentences. Memorization of math facts becomes an important skill as students grow in understanding of concepts. The Saxon Math Program, which focuses on memorization of math facts and “spiraled learning” will be implemented in grades 4-5. Science will inspire a deeper connection to everything as God’s creation and thus students will observe the world through that lens. The Science curriculum will transition to Nature Studies focusing on God’s creation, and will be supported by Anna Botsford Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study, which contains instructions for the teacher on how to approach nature studies (pp. 1-24) as well as lessons and other resource materials. Memoria Press nature studies curriculum materials will also be incorporated to help guide the teacher in lesson planning. The Delta Science Modules will provide hands-on experiments and related workbook activities. This combination will provide an observation and experimental approach to the study of nature that is deeply human. The Reading Street 2007, LA series will be replaced with whole work of classical literature, and supplemented by LA curriculum from Memoria Press. Technology class will also transition to oral tradition/ recitation class, which places greater emphasis on language acquisition and handwriting; two critical development milestones in grades 3-4. Studies show that handwriting facilitates language acquisition and critical thinking. Technology class will continue to be taught in grades 5-8. All technology usage will be Christocentric, virtuous and thoughtful. Key boarding skills will be taught in grade 5 with an emphasis on typing written compositions.
