Hillside Cemetery William H. Inman was born in June 1842 and was raised with 7 siblings in Clarendon, NY. His father was a farmer. I have written about Mr. Inman before but this time I have other information to share. I was recently given some old documents by John Campbell of Rochester and among them were two documents relating to William. The first document is one notifying William of his being enrolled as liable to do Military duty in the Orleans Regimental District, dated June 24, 1864. The second document is form 303, certificate of exemption on account of having furnished a substitute for a period of three years, dated September 28, 1864. There was a fair amount of men from Clarendon that served in the military during the Civil War. Only one other person I know of furnished a substitute and consequently the family was practically destitute because the man lived to be paid a sum of $1,000. That money today would be $16,500! William married Eva May Allen of Clarendon on June 29, 1904, they never had any children. William spent his life farming in Clarendon. In 1883 William served on the Orleans County Board of Supervisors as a Demo- crat. The board was comprised of seven Democrats and three Republicans. In 1911 William was named to the board of directors of the Holley State Exchange Bank. His brother Darwin was the president of the First National Bank of Vermil- lion, South Dakota. The Inman family were all very dedicated to education and they funded scholarships for individuals and set up scholarships at different uni- versities. William gave money to provide books for a library in his Town of Clar- endon. The library in the Holley Elementary School was named the William In- man Library. In 1913 there was an article in the Holley Standard that described a massive sarcophagus of the finest Westerly granite was placed on the lot of William H. Inman. Today that monument is surrounded by many graves of relatives of William Inman. On January 10, 1920 William died. The newspaper article that was printed said: ORLEANS’ RICHEST MAN WILLS ENTIRE ESTATE TO CHAR- ITY. After the will was contested and eventually settled, his heirs accepted small settlements and the rest distributed to many Rochester educa- tional, religious and charitable institutions. The estate was worth $1.5 million which would be almost $20 million today. 5
