A Conversation with Carroll France By Yvonne Garza This month is a special treat for me as the Resident Spotlight writer. Carroll France taught history and coached football at my high school in Hayward (Go Falcons!) when I was a student there. And, yes, it was quite some time ago. I have only pleasant memories of him. When Carroll’s name appeared on the list of new residents, I thought “hmm, I had a teacher by that name.” Yes, it’s him, we reconnected during one of his morning walks and had a chat about memories of our shared time at Sunset High. Granted, we have both changed somewhat since the last time we saw each other! Carroll is a Carlton returnee, having spent respite time with us this past early spring. I guess he likes us enough to come back. When I went to request Carroll’s approval to write the spotlight about him I visited him at his apartment and was surprised by the window of memories he has. In Carroll’s garden window, he has mementos of his professional past. Photos and awards from the schools he has taught at (Sunset and Alhambra High School in Martinez), his Park Police patches are framed, and his time with the California Boating Safety Officers Association are all there. Carroll is a Martinez native as is his wife Susan, and their now adult children Julie and Steven. As usual regarding the Resident Spotlight, I handed over a list of questions to Carroll to make the process easier and so I wouldn’t have to annoy him repeatedly looking for more information. So let’s meet Carroll... We already know Carroll is a local guy, not only are he and his wife from the area, Carroll’s parents were also born in Martinez. Carroll had one sibling, a sister who has passed. Carroll has pleasant memories of his youth: trips to Disneyland, hiking, fishing at Feather River and the adjacent streams. Moving into his adult life, aside from being married now for 53 years to Susan, there was a bit of travel. Carroll has been to Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Portugal, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Aulani Disney Resort at the Hawaiian Islands. I think it’s a fair statement to say he’s a bit of an adventurer. When I asked about his education and career choices, Carroll went to Diablo Valley College, Cal State Hayward (now Cal State East Bay), St. Mary’s College and the University of San Francisco where he majored in history. This led into his working years of teaching and becoming a vice principal as well as coaching football and wrestling. Carroll was my history teacher but I also remember the coach: They are two different fellas. As an educator, he was easy going and always
willing to set time aside to answer questions for any student. As an observer, it was odd hearing the coach's persona shouting plays at the boys during football practice as I always experienced his easy manner in the classroom. I didn’t attend the wrestling matches, but my male friends on the wrestling team had nothing but respect and praise for “Mr. France.” During summer breaks, Carroll worked for the East Bay Regional Parks as a Reserve/Seasonal Police Officer. When asked about an alternative career from teaching, the Parks Police Officer is the answer. As is apropo for a football coach, his favorite season is the fall, because it’s football season. As I mentioned before, Carroll is a walker and this is what he did to stave off boredom at the height of the pandemic. He also spent time in front of the TV, as we all did, in particular to watch sports. As Carroll is on the quiet side but I asked the usual question: What do you like about living at Carlton? His response was short and sweet, “the kindness and care demonstrated by all of the employees on a daily basis.” Now, I typically try to have two full pages of facts about your new neighbors, but this time I left a little space for quotes from a few of Carroll’s former players and students. When I reached out to fellow alumni I received responses quickly: “Coach in his own way taught me about being respectful of everyone, at the time it wasn’t something I was good at.” -Student 1981 “Coach would be yelling at me to ‘get the lead’ out at practice, then I’d look over and see him smiling because he knew I had heard him with the helmet on.” -Student 1985 “Mr. France made it easy to pay attention in class by keeping it interesting and not just dry facts out of a book.” -Student 1984 “As a teenage girl, watching Mr. France who politely in- stilled manners in the boys who were too cool to show good manners, was entertaining; as an adult it’s a pleasant memory.” -Student 1983 These are only a few of the statements I received, but we can all see the pattern of this former educator. On our alumni web page there are hundreds more. While all of you may get to know him as Carroll, to me he will always be “Mr. France.”

TAKING YOUR BODY WHERE YOUR MIND WANTS TO GO Five Ways to Rehydrate Quickly Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body requires water to function. Water helps regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, transport nutrients, remove waste, and circu- late blood. That means your body can’t prop- erly perform these functions if you’re dehydrated, which happens when you lose more fluids than you take in. Certain popula- tions are more prone to dehydration than others, including children, older adults, and ELK GROVE people with certain medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disease. Here are the five ways to rehydrate quickly: Water - For most people, drinking water is sufficient for rehydrating. If you’re a salty sweater, be sure to replace both the sodium and fluid you lose through sweat, preferably through a balanced diet. Coffee and Tea - Contrary to popular belief, drinking moderate amounts of coffee and tea have similar hydrating properties as water. Milk - Skim and low fat milk can be used as an effective post-workout or general rehydration beverage if you don’t have lactose intolerance or a milk protein allergy, of course. Fruits and Vegetables - Due to their high water content, both fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables make excellent hydrating snacks. Oral Hydration Solutions - Oral hydration solutions contain water, elec- trolytes, and sugar. You can make your own simple rehydration solution at home.
