Contemporary Piano Series 3 Joanna MacGregor Wednesday 14th January, 7.30pm £11.50 (£6.50 concessions) Joanna MacGregor - piano Vanessa Williamson - mezzo-soprano (Socrate) Stephen Pratt - narrator (Sports et Divertissements) Satie - Gymnopédies Nos 1 & 2 Pièces froides Sports et Divertissements Arvo Pärt - Für Alina; Für Anna Maria Stravinsky - Sonata for piano Satie - Music for Entr’acte (dir. René Clair) (film screening + live performance) Cage - Cheap Imitation I Satie - Mort de Socrate (Part III from Socrate) Gymnopédie No. 3 Joanna MacGregor presents an evening devoted to the eccentric genius of Erik Satie, godfather of Minimalism and the inventor of ‘furniture music.’ From the elegantly mysterious Gymnopédies to the tender vocal monologue describing the death of Socrates, Joanna MacGregor explores Satie’s profound impact on the twentieth century. The programme also features John Cage’s Cheap Imitation, the mirror-image of Socrate, the crystalline beauty and silences of Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli style, and in Stravinsky’s jazz-inflected Sonata. The pianist is joined by Stephen Pratt whose narration brings life to the shrewd social satire of Sports et Divertissments, and the mezzo-soprano Vanessa Williamson in Mort de Socrate. Joanna MacGregor also plays live to Satie’s seminal (and very funny) film collaboration with surrealist René Clair, Entr’acte.
