Gymnopédie No. 3
Joanna MacGregor presents an evening devoted to the eccentric genius of
Erik Satie, godfather of Minimalism and the inventor of ‘furniture music.’
From the elegantly mysterious Gymnopédies to the tender vocal monologue
describing the death of Socrates, Joanna MacGregor explores Satie’s
profound impact on the twentieth century. The programme also features
John Cage’s Cheap Imitation, the mirror-image of Socrate, the crystalline
beauty and silences of Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli style, and in Stravinsky’s
jazz-inflected Sonata.

The pianist is joined by Stephen Pratt whose narration brings life to the shrewd social satire of Sports et
Divertissments, and the mezzo-soprano Vanessa Williamson in Mort de Socrate. Joanna MacGregor also plays live
to Satie’s seminal (and very funny) film collaboration with surrealist René Clair, Entr’acte.

Strand [2014]
Choreographed & performed by Joan Laage (Kogut Butoh)
Music by Dmitry Artamonov
Costume by Sarah Damm

Strand is inspired by the culture of hair and by the choreographer’s
personal journey from waist length hair to shaven head and how
hairstyle became an integral part of her performance. Control
of one’s hairstyle is a source either of autonomy or degradation.
Given hairstyle’s link with an individual’s identity, what might be
the significance of a single remaining strand of hair, both to the
performer and the viewer? Strand premiered in Seattle in December
2014 and was created especially for K.R.O.P.P., a performance series
in Uppsala, Sweden.

Visual Piano is a shape-shifting project where piano music and visuals meet and
interact. It is a captivating and enjoyable journey inside contemporary music
which includes original compositions by Francesco Di Fiore, alongside pieces by
Douwe Eisenga (Netherlands), William Susman (USA), Neil Campbell (UK),
Matteo Sommacal and Marco Betta (Italy). The programme presents these
contemporary compositions alongside music from the Baroque era composed by
composers such as Couperin, Galuppi and Domenico and Alessandro Scarlatti.
Francesco Di Fiore, pianist and composer, was born in Palermo in 1966. He
studied in Austria with Harald Ossberger, in the Czech Republic, at the National
Academy of Music, with Peter Toperczer and in Italy with Eliodoro Sollima and
Bruno Canino. In 1986 he started his concert career performing hundreds of
concerts worldwide. He appears regularly at international festivals presenting his
compositions and also music by other contemporary composers.
