C AM P O LSO N YMCA THE BIRCH LOG Volume LXI A Newsletter for the Camp Olson Family Spring 2019 Camp Olson YMCA 65th Anniversary Reunion “Carry On” Friday, August 30 - Monday, September 2, 2019 Please Join Us and Register Soon! “One man may not live to see him dreams come true but his institutions carry on”. E.O. Olson Whether you have gone to camp one year or ten years, attended family camp, served as a summer staff member, provided support for our mission or are just a fan of what we do at Camp Olson then this weekend is for you. A celebration of MEMORIES, FRIEND- SHIP, TRADITIONS, SUCCESS and a time to CARRY ON. Regardless of the reason you may attend, we know that we have been Sharing the Spirit of the Northwoods now for over six decades. We have been creating memories that last a lifetime for three generations of campers, families, staff members and volun- teers! Come and join us for all or part of this 4-day celebration as we “Share the Spirit of the Northwoods” together as one family, the Camp Olson Family. Schedule and registration information is available on pages 14 and 15 or the Camp Ol- son website www.campolson.org. Saturday’s Lumberjack Jack & Jill themed day will send us all back in time. Dress in your, bibs, & flannels and boots as we will celebrate with a cookout and lumberjack games on the athletic field. We will be prepared rain or shine to sing the night away with the music of Jim McGowan. Jim will be with us the entire evening and there will be plenty of time for open mic. Jim is an uncle to three of our long time campers and has visited Camp Olson and jammed with us before. He also works for the YMCA in Gov- ernment Relations. Jim performs an engaging mix of acoustic, folk, rock, Irish, roots & blues, Jim’s musical influences include John Prine, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, John- ny Cash, John Denver, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Doc Watson. Tommy Makem, the Clancy Brothers and many others. Prepare for a good time...and to sing along! You can learn more about Jim at www.mcgowan.rocks or visit his facebook page, Jim McGowan Music. Did you know that you can do- nate directly to Camp Olson YMCA thru Facebook. 100% of all gifts donate go directly to Camp Olson YMCA, Facebook does not charge a processing fee.
Page 2 The Birch Log President’s Message ~ Michael Holmes As I write this letter there is over two feet of snow in my yard and more predicted for the weekend. Hmmm, maybe the coping strategy of thinking of warm thoughts is part of what is driving enrollments at Camp Olson, after all the camp is at 80% of capacity already. Then again, maybe it’s because each year Camp Olson continues to build on it past success, evaluate and correct its weak spots, and strive to be true to its mission. One significant change from last year is that the resident professional staff of Russ Link, Lindsey Abrahams, Aiden Windebank, and Amy Johnson have added a fifth member to the team, Assistant Camp Director Demi Kapler whom you will read more about in this issue of the Birch Log. Bringing on Demi is an indicator of how much Camp Olson has matured as an organization. The sound financial foundation that Camp Olson operates on, the ever increasing numbers of campers served, the growth in leader- ship programs, and the critical capital improvements that have been made over the years are evidence of that maturity and makes this the right time to bring another person to the team. So what is Camp Olson going to do now that this position has been added? Well one thing is for sure, they are not going rest. By adding that fifth person it means there are two more year-round hands to move Camp Olson forward. Ongoing Camp Olson board activities have focused on making improvements to our new member on- boarding process and bringing the “rule book” (our policies) up to date to improve operations, address diversity and inclusion, and maintain the safety of our campers and staff. Our Nominating Committee has been active and will continue to be so as we plan to replace 3 to 4 board members next year. When you come to Camp Olson this summer, one change that you will notice is a new staff lounge located just north of the White Palace. Camp Olson demands a lot from its summer staff and if they are doing the job right it can be exhausting. Providing an adequate space for staff during their time off was missing. This new staff lounge corrects that and gives them a nice place to relax and recharge, exchange ideas, and share experiences. It is another piece of what helps them deliver at the high standards that are expected of them. If this is your first experience with Camp Olson as camper or guardian of a camper we would like to thank you for choosing Camp Olson and joining a family of participants that has been growing for 65 years. We hope you have a wonderful time and that this is the beginning of a lifelong affiliation with Camp Olson. Speaking of 65, Camp Olson is planning to celebrate its 65th anniversary over Labor Day Weekend , I hope you can join us. I think E.O. and Bella Olson would be pleased with what their gift has grown into. Take care, Mike Holmes CAMP OLSON YMCA 2019 Board of Directors President Michael Holmes – President – Rochester, MN 6th year Dave Rogers – Vice President - Chillicothe, MO 5th year Michael Collins – Winnetka, IL 4th year Marisa Capezzuto – Winona, MN 1st year Julianne Davis – Duluth, MN 6th year Megan Frank – Rochester, MN 5th year Nancy Huizenga – St. Paul, MN 6th year Lori Jonason – Minneapolis, MN 5th year Bridgit Jordan – Minneapolis, MN 3rd year Erik Julsrud – Duluth, MN 6th year Sean Kempke – Duluth, MN 5th year Jenny Sall – Minneapolis, MN 1st year Michael Titus – Elizabeth, CO 5th year Jeff Van Straaten – Duluth, MN 1st year Andy Wood – Rochester, MN 6th year
The Birch Log Page 3 Meet our newly elected Board Members Camp Olson has been a part of my life since I was 8 years old when I first attended as a camper. I attended every year until I was 17, including taking a trip to the BWCA! After being a camper, I worked for several summers as a counselor and as one of the first LIT leaders. Camp Olson has helped me find an incredible group of lifelong friends and a place that feels like home. It has also helped me develop my leadership skills, fostered my love for the out- doors and has created more joy in my life than I can put into words. After my freshman year at Northland College, I went on to serve in the Wisconsin National Guard as a mechanic, then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Environmental Policy, Planning and Law. After graduation, I lived in the Portland, OR area as well as Phoenix, AZ for over 9 years. As soon as I moved back to Minnesota, I knew I wanted to get more Marisa involved with camp and ensure that future campers can enjoy camp for many Capezzuto years to come. I work from my home for Colliers International Valuation & Winona, MN Advisory Services as the Administrative Manager for the Southwestern United States. My love affair with Camp Olson began in 1977. It was my first year as a camper. I continued to go back the next several summers. In 1981, my Mom suggested that I apply to work at Camp instead of getting a “normal” job for the summer. I had no idea how life-changing that would be. The next four years on staff where some of the best summers of my life. The things I learned and the people I met there were invaluable. It instilled in me a love of the outdoors, helped me to become a stronger leader and a more com- passionate human being. I feel very blessed to be a part of the Camp Olson family. Both of my kids, who are now in college, were also long-time camp- ers. Over the years, it has been amazing to see how camp has changed, yet also stayed the same. I look forward to giving back to this place that means Jenny so much to so many. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the Univer- Sall sity of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. I have been in the Graphic Design field for Minneapolis, MN 30 years. Currently, I am a Creative Director at Post Consumer Brands (the cereal company) in Lakeville, MN. My brother Mike got me started working at Camp the summer of 1990 as a dishwasher. From there, I spent the next 8 summers counseling, directing Program Areas and leading the Homestead project. These were the best, most formidable summers of my life. I took my camp experience and built a career of guiding extended wilderness trips for incarcerated youth in New Jersey. Lat- er I received my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology in Seattle, Washington and moved back to Duluth, Minnesota to take a job as a Psychotherapist for a residential wilderness therapeutic program. Presently I am a stay at home dad managing our two children Elizabeth and Brooke with my wife Aimee. It is so wonderful to live closer to Camp. We have attended Family Camp for Jeff VanStraaten many summers and for the first time our oldest daughter will be attending Duluth, MN kids camp on her own. The Camp Olson YMCA Board of Directors with gratitude extend their heartfelt thanks for your past, present and future support for youth, leadership and our camping programs. Camp Olson YMCA Board Members volunteer their time and talents to support the achieve- ment of our mission. If you would like more information or have an interest in becoming a board member, please contact any of our current board members or Russ Link, Executive Director 218-363-2207 or russ@campolson.org

The Birch Log Page 7 The 2018 Financial Review Camp Olson YMCA is pleased to report that the fiscal year ended on September 30, 2018 with a small surplus. This was due in part to continued increased financial support, re- stricted support, significant in-kind donations by alumni and friends which help to offset costs related to our operations, and capital improvements. Page 12 The Birch Log Camp Olson’s Newest Full-Time Staff Member Demi Kapler Over the past 17 years, camp has doubled in size in the terms of numbers of campers who come through our doors. In that time our staffing structure has not changed at all and our team of four has continued to take on a little more work each year. We’ve finally reached a point where we need an extra set of hands and have created the position of Assistant Director. After a Na- tionwide search and reviewing over 40 candidates we were pleased to offer the position to one of our own, Demi Kapler. Demi’s has been coming to camp since 1994. She was a camper for years and ultimately ended up as one of our esteemed staff. Demi worked as a counselor and Corral Director from 2010-2014. In 2014 she also gradu- ated from the University of Minnesota - Duluth with degrees in Psychology and Outdoor Education. After graduation Demi spent 5 years in Utah where she continued to gain valuable skills and experience in her work as a field- guide, program coordinator for special needs youth, as a case manager for youth and their families, and solo backpacking 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. Demi is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Equine Assisted Mental Health from Prescott College. Demi will be joining the team in early April and we are thrilled to have her skills and expertise as we prepare for another successful summer! 2019 Summer Management Staff We are fortunate to have Bailey Adkins returning to us as the Pro- gram Director for her sixth summer on staff. Bailey has worked at the boathouse for much of her time at camp and brings an immense amount of knowledge with her as the Captain of the U of M sailing team. Bailey will be graduating from the University of Minnesota with her degree in Education. In addition to her time at the boathouse, Bailey has also been a CIT Leader and a counselor. Bailey is camper focused and has a lot to teach the next generation of staff about working with kids and running a successful program area. Of course she is a favorite at family camp! Patrick Joyce will be returning for a second summer of Management Staff, this will be Patrick’s 6th summer on staff. In all of his years on staff Patrick has served as a Counselor, CIT leader, Nature staff and much more. This spring he will be graduating with his degree in Social Work from Winona State University. It’s hard not to get along with Patrick and his unexpected humor. We know he will do a great job this summer for us as the CC. Wel- come back Patrick! Margret Raasch will be joining us as the LDP Coordinator for her 7th summer on staff. Margret has been a Counselor, Waterfront Director, Fishing Director, LIT and CIT Leader. She is excellent at inspiring youth to take on leadership roles. Margret has an infectious personality and campers gravitate to her. She has a lot to teach our CITs about mak- ing connections with campers and helping them to be their best selves while at camp. Margret is an early childhood/special education para- professional in the WHA School District.
The Birch Log Page 13 Two-Thirds of My Life Sarah Fudge is returning for her sixteenth summer in 2019. Eight as a camper and eight as a staff member. This will be her third sum- mer as our Girls Counselor Coordinator Few people dedicate as many summers to camp and we are thrilled to have such a stellar per- son back. Sarah is a graduate from Missouri State University where she received her de- gree in psychology. At camp she has worked as a CIT Leader, Corral staff, and much more. She is excellent at establishing connections with campers and staff alike. We are thrilled to have Sarah back on the team this summer. She is AMAZING! At least once every summer someone asks me, “Is this your last summer?” I never quite know how to answer. Whether that is because I’m not sure where I’ll be living, what job I’ll have to leave to come back, or whether I can realistically afford to work at camp all summer, the answer that comes out tends to be an optimistic, “We’ll see.” The truth is, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to leave. Camp helped raise me. As a camper, it taught me that being away from my family wasn’t the end of the world. It taught me to be tenacious with my goals; striving for my wrangler, my skipper, Crafty Queen, or the top of Carlton Peak. It taught me the thrill of adventure and exploration on trips to Big Fork, Voyageurs National Park, and the Superior Hiking Trail. Camp fanned the flames of my love of the outdoors with overnights, the bog, horses, and Leo, the tiger salamander. Camp nurtured my creativity in the craft shop and my sense of responsibility as an LIT and CIT. Camp gave me a family of strangers who changed my life, and gave me a place to go where I know I will always belong. Camp taught me a lot as a counselor too. Through long nights of being woken up for everything from trips to the bathroom, to troublesome sleeping bag zippers, to bad dreams and chatty sleep walkers, I learned patience (and the value of a good siesta). Through homesickness and cabin drama and long power-up lines I learned how much it means to spend just five minutes really listening to someone. Through cabin-only holidays, late night talks on the athletic field lying on a parachute, and sitting close around a campfire singing Country Roads, I learned the impact that a single week can have on a camper has just as much impact on the staff. I learned to choose my battles, to take a break, to garden, and that sometimes the best way to teach someone is to let them fail. Two years on management have taught me the beauty of opportunity. They’ve taught me that being a kid is often much harder than it looks. I’ve learned time management, people management, and how to take care of myself while making sure things are going well all over camp. I’ve learned that problems never cease, but neither do the rewards of hard work and dedication. I’ve learned kids give back tenfold what they are given in encouragement. I’ve learned little signals that someone needs some time off, and when to step in versus when to be silent moral support for a counselor who doesn’t need anything other than the confidence to try something, and I’ve gained confidence myself in the process. I have never gone to camp and come home the same as I left. I go to camp and I learn things about myself and the world around me. I learn new methods for dealing with issues, but I also learn about what it’s like to be someone that kids and staff look to for support and guidance. I keep coming back because I know I am part of something truly amazing; something more than just a bunch of kids spend- ing a week or a summer in the middle of nowhere. I keep coming back because I know there will always be more, this place, and the people who make it what it is, has to teach me. I’m just trying to give some of that back. 2019 Summer Employment Do you know if some interested in working at camp? Please have them visit our website or contact Lindsey at lindsey@campolson.org.
