SCHOOL CAPTAINS’ REPORT Hello everybody, Thomas and Abbey here. This past week as been a good week because we are just over two weeks away from school holidays, and maybe remote learning 2.0 being done and dusted. We would also like to say that we have done an exceptional job during remote learning 2.0. On Wednesday 9th September we have our 100 years of ENPS celebration (yay!). We would like you to dress up as if you were alive 100 years ago, so you can play the part. In Year Six over the last two weeks we have been learning about human rights and the rights of a child and society to make the world a better place and keep everyone happy. Have a great weekend. Thomas and Abbey PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE While this year certainly has not panned out the way we predicted, and definitely not how we expected to celebrate our school’s centenary, it is undeniable that there is still a wonderful sense of pride and anticipation building as we head into ‘birthday week!’ In the coming week, our school will turn 100 years old. What a moment to celebrate, embrace and be proud of, regardless of COVID-19! Please join with us across the coming week, and especially on Wednesday 9th September, to commemorate this special birthday with us. All students will receive special mail to be opened on Wednesday. We will have a special celebration day of activities on Wednesday, including a ‘100 years’ dress up theme and special whole school assembly. We hope that you can celebrate (and dress up) with us. Staffing With uncertain times still ahead for us all, we have begun planning for Term Four and a (very hopeful) return to onsite learning and teaching for all in the coming months. We obviously await government announcements and anticipate that any return will be staggered. I can however outline the following staffing developments and changes as we prepare for the term ahead. It has been with a very heavy heart this week that Julianne Scott has announced that she will not be returning to ENPS for the remainder of the year. Julianne will take personal leave for the duration of Term Four and will then be taking Long Service Leave in 2021 until her retirement mid-way through next year. Julianne has had a long and wonderful career in education, and had a lasting impact on so many at ENPS over her time with us. We will certainly make sure we have a celebration in her honour in 2021! We all wish Julianne the very best. With Julianne’s news, we are now making arrangements for 4JS and also 4EG for Term Four. Nicki Bilby will continue in 4JS and Emily Gosden will begin her family leave in the first week of the new term. Once arrangements are finalised we will be communicating with 4EG families and announce the home group teacher for 4EG. In Term Four, Connor Smith will be returning to 6CS for two days a week to work alongside Mori Milholland. Connor will continue in his role as Acting Assistant Principal with a focus on student engagement and wellbeing. Mori will then move to 4CB for two days to release Angela Collins in her Learning Specialist role. Angela will be working closely with teaching teams during these days to build teacher capacity in literacy teaching across the school. Alice Stephens will also step out of the classroom for the term in her Acting Assistant Principal role. Alice’s role is to focus on student data, assessment and reporting, supporting teaching staff across the school with the return to onsite teaching and learning. We already know our Semester Two reports will once again be significantly impacted by remote learning and it is important to us that we address the individual and collective learning needs of our students across the school. We are currently finalising arrangements for 5AS and will communicate with 5AS the outcome of a new appointment to this role. With the potential return onsite, we also anticipate that Sue Elsbury will be able to return to her PE role, alongside Craig Mather. In happy news, we are excited for Adrian Jones and his wife, Kim, who are expecting their first baby in the new year! Steve Biddulph – Parent workshops in Term 4 We are excited to announce that we have once again been able to secure internationally acclaimed author and family psychologist, Steve Biddulph, to work with our families early in Term 4. Steve will be providing two online evening presentations; Raising Boys on Wednesday 7th October and Raising Girls on Wednesday 14th October. ISSUE #13 PAGE 2
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE CONTINUED Steve worked with us in 2016 with tremendous reviews. As a part of our parent education commitment, we will subsiding our ENPS families to attend. See the Compass message and further in this newsletter for booking details. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself or the school office. 2021 Planning It is hard to believe but it is also the time of the year that we begin planning for the next year ahead! We ask that if you and your family are planning on leaving ENPS at the end of 2020, please let the school office know as soon as you are in a position to do so. (This excludes Year Six students). Downloading Reports from Compass Later in this newsletter, there is also information for downloading your child’s reports and learning updates from Compass. Please understand that when families leave the school, they also lose access to Compass (and therefore access to these reports if not previously downloaded.) This includes our Year Six students leaving at the end of this year. Happy Father’s Day Wishing all our ENPS community fathers, grandfathers and father figures a very special Father’s Day this Sunday. It is extra hard this year for many as we can’t be with our fathers, grandfathers and father figures. I know that my own father lives in a small country town in Queensland and I haven’t been able to see him anywhere near as much as I usually would this year. Happy Father’s Day to all our ENPS dads! Thank you again for your ongoing support. Please stay safe and look out for each other in our community. Fingers crossed there will soon be a light at the end of our lock down tunnel! Take care, Kate Barletta Principal COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS (CIS) At Essendon North Primary School we are currently preparing for our upcoming evaluation visit, due to be conducted in March 2021. A key component of the evaluation process is the school’s self-study. Historically, this survey data has been utilised in a variety of purposeful ways and created real change for our community. Our last CIS Survey provided opportunities to: • review school wide approaches to student wellbeing and welfare • develop consistent Guiding Statements to influence decision making • refine our communication of student learning and growth • identify the needs of our English as Additional Language (EAL) Learners • improve our access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and our approach to digital citizenship • refine our collective definition of International Mindedness and Global Citizenship • support our Child Safety Practices and documentation of inclusive practices • and much more! As a school we value the perspectives of all stakeholders and would appreciate your support to complete the community survey. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You should complete one survey per child enrolled at ENPS. We hope you can spare some time to support the school in our desire to collaboratively improve. The survey will be available for the next two weeks and we require a 90% completion rate to provide a comprehensive overview of family perspectives. Each survey response goes into the draw to win a prize! To access the survey, please click on this link. If you have any questions or need support, please contact the office. Thank you very much for completing the survey. ISSUE #13 PAGE 3

We talked about how the school has changed in the last 100 years and shared connections that our own families have with the school. Mrs Barletta shares her mother’s class photo from ENPS Virtual Incursion Experiences NGV - Marking Time The NGV gave Year Two students the chance to explore Indigenous artwork and learn more about Indigenous culture. ENPS HISTORY…SHARED MEMORIES Last newsletter we took a look back at the 2000s…. This week we look back on the last 10 years at ENPS, from 2010 – present. We asked our staff to share some of their fondest memories from the last decade, and here’s what some had to say… I have wonderful memories of accompanying Lucy Lapira and a group of choir students to take part in the Victorian State School Spectacular in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Spectacular is an annual event that showcases the talents of state school students in the areas of performing arts. Our students were part of the mass choir with rehearsals at the City Town Hall. The final performances were held in front of thousands of people at Hisense Arena and televised! – Julie Schenk A few years back the Specialist team which at the time consisted of Mina Stephens, Marilia Mi, Amanda Kingsley, Nicki Myszka and myself participated in Wakakiri, an Australian performing arts competition. Our story was based on Jonathon Welch, the founder of Choir of Hardknocks (who I have worked with previously) and who attended our rehearsal at The Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds. It was our first time in the competition and we made State Finals. This is something we were extremely proud of. The story was about the reasons why people become homeless, and Dr Jonathon Welch who decided to be proactive and create a choir in which they have a place to belong. The choir still exists though Jonathon has taken his career in a different direction. Another Performing Arts highlight was one of our fabulous students winning the huge role of Matilda. She performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne CBD for months on end with stellar performances. I myself went to see her 5 times. – Lucy Lapira How can you go passed the events of last year which led to the new oval in 2019? We also had four students make it all the way to the state finals for athletics (relay team) in 2019, first time ever! (Kirk K, Isa M, Thomas L and Ares S). – Craig Mather I started working at ENPS back in 2010. I started my role as Education Support Staff working in Angela Collins' class when she was a Foundation teacher. Gordon, our school crossing supervisor, worked doing maintenance around the school with a man named Jike. Fay, Leslie and Joy were our wonderful front of house administration team. Over the past 10 years I have worked with the majority of teaching staff at ENPS, helping out in their classrooms and in other areas of daily school life. I have been on excursions and camps and have enjoyed the time I have spent taking on new and adventurous activities over the years. The gymnasium had recently been built when I began working at ENPS and there was a cubby house in the Foundation area. We have had play areas added, and shade sails to keep the children undercover when they play. The long jump and sand pit were a popular attraction. There has been the removal and addition of portable buildings to the school, adding extra class space for the ever growing numbers. The library used to be located in the Year One learning area, the TLC, and has moved several times during the past 10 years. Linda was the Librarian, then the role was taken over by a lady named Nina. Julie would come in to help Nina and once she left Julie became the face of the library. A lot has changed since that year. We have seen many great staff members move on to other schools. Kylie Baxter was the Assistant Principal. She moved on to become a Principal at another school. There were very few Education Support Staff back then, only around three or four of us. Over the years our team has been as large as 13 people, helping and giving extra support across the school. – Becky Haynes Some of my best memories at ENPS in recent years include Student Led Conferences, Footy Days, Foundation excursions, Story Time with Kate from Niddrie Library and our Mother’s Day celebrations! – Ashlee Williams ISSUE #13 PAGE 7
OFFICE NEWS STUDENT ABSENCES AT ALL TIMES INCLUDING REMOTE LEARNING If you have received an absentee letter and would like to amend your child’s absence on the form, we kindly ask parents/carers to please sign the form and email either a photo or scanned copy of it to essendon.north.ps@education.vic.gov.au as soon as possible, and the office will amend your child’s form accordingly. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to call the office. Schools are requested by the Department of Education to upload attendance/absence data on a daily basis, and the data is provided to the Department of Education. It is important that if your child is not attending school that you enter this into Compass the day before or even on the morning of the student’s absence. Your child’s class room teacher marks the roll in the morning and afternoon daily. If you have any concerns you can email your child’s teacher directly via Compass. Please be aware that if you do not enter your child’s absence on Compass your child’s teacher will mark the student as unexplained and you will need to update this soon as possible. Please call the office if you have any concerns or require assistance. This is applicable for all students from Foundation to Year Six. Please see the step-by-step instructions on page ten on how to enter an absence in Compass. If you are unclear on how to complete this please call the office and we will talk you through this process. It is the parent/carer’s responsibility to enter your child/ren’s absence on Compass (not the teacher or the office). VISITORS ON-SITE AT ESSENDON NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE There will not be more than 3 people (visitors) in the school’s office at any given time. A face mask must be worn by anyone entering the school. • Visitors to Essendon North Primary School’s grounds will be limited to those delivering or supporting essential school services and operations (e.g. student health and wellbeing services, specialist curriculum programs, maintenance workers). • Given the current circumstances parents will only be able to enter the school grounds when essential to do so. If your family circumstances have changed we would kindly ask for you to contact the school’s office to arrange to update your child enrolment form so it is reflective of your family circumstances, and that both parents have their own login to Compass. This is also important as when your child moves from one government school to another over any year level and when they transition into a government high school, we transfer your child’s information across to the next Victorian government school. During these uncertain times we are following Department of Education guidelines and we thank you for your time and patience in, we know it will be difficult for everyone. STEP 1: On your home page, select the “View Academic Reports” beneath the child you would like to look at. STEP 2: The search will bring up all of the reports uploaded to your child’s record. MANDARIN – FOOD LANGUAGE AND COOKING Our Year Five students experienced making Chinese dumplings on WebEx! They even made their own dough from scratch. Year Three students have also been learning different vegetables and the benefits of certain vegetables. They practised Chinese Mandarin at a supermarket with me on WebEx and virtually experienced how to use the learnt language in everyday life. Mì Lǎo Shī LOTE (Mandarin) Teacher Órlaith, 5LH Estelle, 5BL Mì Lǎo Shī LIBRARY NEWS The 2020 Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now drawing to a close. Could all completed books be added to your child’s online reading list no later than Monday 14th September. Although the official closing date is 18th September, I will need a few days to verify all books and complete the administration work before submitting the final report. This year has presented many problems and made it extremely difficult for families to gain access to books, so it’s completely understandable that not all students will have read the required number of books to complete the Challenge. Please don’t despair and reassure children that the Premiers’ Reading Challenge runs every year and the 2021 Challenge will begin again during Term One. Just a friendly reminder that families have access to the ENPS Book Place via the daily learning schedule – just follow the link to extra activities. Keep up to date with all the latest news of new books being published and listen to/watch videos of books being read aloud. All videos are created by the ENPS library with new videos added each week.
