GLORIA – A Mass for Congregations 3
OPENING PRAYER Please be seated. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness. The Word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 29 L.MAYERNIK SECOND READING Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7 Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Please stand. 4
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION D. HURD Verse: John said: One mightier than I is coming he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. GOSPEL Lk 3:15-16, 21-22 Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. All: Glory to you, O Lord. The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Please be seated. HOMILY 5
Please stand. THE PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. (all stand) For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS ANTHEM Come, Holy Spirit S. Decasare ORATE FRATRES Presider: Pray brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a personal devotional that anyone can pray at any time to express their love for Jesus Christ and their desire to be united with him at that moment, but where circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion. We invite you to pray this prayer by St. Alphonsus de Liguori: My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. 8
