Foreword AAXO Chairperson ABOUT AAXO 2019 marks the fourth year since AAXO’s inception. What progress we have made! AAXO has been driving the exhibition industry forward, in collaboration with key stakeholders, media and associations. We have positioned ourselves as an Association with credibility through our continued ABC Accreditation and audits, initiatives such as our AAXO Badge of Approval for Organisers and now for Suppliers too, as well as offering a range of initiatives through which the industry as a whole can learn, network and do business. 2018 saw a year of transformation for the Association through the appointment of a new Board of Directors and the acquisition of new talent. We hosted the successful second edition of the Exhibition of Exhibitions as well as the AAXO ROAR Awards, in collaboration with EXSA’s EXSA-llence awards under the EIA (Exhibition Industry Alliance). We also saw huge growth in our Associate Membership and have embarked on a drive to attract organisers, suppliers and venues from the wider African continent. We hosted many successful networking and training events in Johannesburg and Cape Town and plan to continue these initiatives in the year to come. As a final highlight of the year past, we have re-initiated the Exhibition Industry Research, funded by South African Tourism, to refresh our knowledge of just how far the reach of exhibitions are and how much we contribute to the Southern African economy. With these and many more valuable initiatives in full force, 2019 is set to be an exciting year. As usual we kick of the year with our respected ROAR Awards and the Exhibition of Exhibitions. With training aimed at both our exhibiting clients, as well as organiser members, we plan to bring the entire industry together for a jam-packed week of learning and collaboration. Also, don’t miss the free-to-attend seminars held on the exhibition floor over the two days of the Exhibition of Exhibitions! The 2019 AAXO Directory is a compilation of valuable information on Africa’s exhibition industry geared towards assisting stakeholders in accessing information relevant to their business. In 2019 our focus will be on marketing exhibitions as the marketing channel of choice to Advertising and Media Agencies, Marketing and PR professionals and our existing client base. We aim to work in closer collaboration with our suppliers through new initiatives with EXSA and continuously provide platforms for learning and networking. AAXO Who We Are ABOUT AAXO AAXO was formed as a collective platform to represent the organiser industry at large by promoting growth and development while addressing the industry’s challenges. Its efforts are directed towards its mission of being the respected authority and representative of the exhibition organising industry responsible for governance, skills development and research while upholding world-class industry standards. This, in turn, is designed to be the engine that drives the African exhibition and organiser growth. AAXO representation transcends across many industry sectors and the organisation uses its wealth of knowledge and experience to address the unique challenges faced by organisers across Africa. Members are governed by an all- encompassing code of conduct that informs ethical behaviour in the industry. Additionally, this code of conduct guides the way exhibitions are conducted, the quality of exhibitions, and informs ethical interaction within the industry. One of AAXO’s key mandates is to empower the industry with skills and knowledge towards creating a professional industry that offers unparalleled service while creating value for all stakeholders. Much effort is invested into organising training activities for various skills gaps identified as necessary in running successful exhibitions. The organising community also stages events such as the Exhibition of Exhibitions to facilitate interaction between fellow members and service providers where opportunities to share ideas, network and create business relationships are created. The ROAR Awards have quickly become a celebrated industry staple... Creating a platform for organisers to receive recognition for their exceptional work, the ROAR Awards take place with the Exhibition Industry Alliance. AAXO leverages its vast network of partnerships with common interests, knowledge and expertise to advance the industry. These partnerships offer essential business networks and value to members. In upholding the African exhibition industry to world-class standards, AAXO keeps on top of developments in the industry and constantly investigates new technologies to improve the standard of exhibitions. In an ever-changing and extremely competitive environment, this is an important function for members who strive to grow their businesses by creating competitive advantage. 5 AAXO 2019 5

AAXO 2018 Overview ABOUT AAXO INSIGHTFUL RESEARCH In 2016, AAXO solicited the first ever South African exhibition industry research from Grant Thornton. The insights were released at a formal media briefing in early 2017, and case a light on the significant impact and contribution of the exhibition industry while also highlighting trends and opportunities. In 2018, with the funding of South African Tourism, we commissioned the North West University to benchmark the Exhibition Industry Research previously done. Key industry events among the trade, consumer and trade and consumer categories were earmarked and the research is currently nearing its final stages. We plan to release the research findings in another formal media briefing in early 2019. CELEBRATING ROAR-ING SUCCESSES In line with our mandate of being a champion for organisers and suppliers in the exhibition industry, AAXO held the second annual AAXO ROAR Awards in early 2018 – yet another glamorous event giving our members the chance to enjoy recognition for the innovative work that they do. Receiving an AAXO ROAR Award is a prestigious accomplishment, as members compete with the best the industry has to offer, and all shows entered could be audited through AAXO’s ABC initiatives. GLOBAL EXHIBITIONS DAY Not entirely new to the concept of celebrating Global Exhibitions Day (GED), AAXO proudly hosted events to underscore the importance of creating awareness globally, in conjunction with over 70 other countries. According to UFI, the event reached over 3 million people on Twitter alone. This year, our involvement stretched to include: • The Exhibition Games Held during Markex / MADEX on the 6th of June 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre, the race was on for member teams to collect clues and compete for a variety of amazing prizes. • Open Conversation On the morning of GED 2018, we hosted one of the our popular Open Conversations at Markex / MADEX, facilitating suppliers and organisers the opportunity to network and find solutions to the common challenges they face and ultimately work together to improve the industry as a whole. OTHER GROUNDBREAKING INITIATIVES • Association Membership Growth and Development This membership tier for exhibition venues and suppliers was established to open opportunities to venues and suppliers that were previously only available to organisers and to increase credibility in the industry as a whole because of the fact that all AAXO members have a strict code of conduct. For the almost 50 new Associate Members who have joined so far, the exclusive use of the ‘AAXO-Approved Venue’ and ‘AAXI-Approved Supplier’ badges put them in another league. • Organiser and Supplier Networking Events AAXO hosted several Open Conversations and Networking Events in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which was strongly supported by the industry and demonstrates the need for the industry to work together, despite strong but healthy competition. • AAXO Directory AAXO, with the help of Malachite Publishing, successfully published and distributed the 2018 AAXO Directory to members as well as through imperative networking events and at the AAXO ROAR Awards. • Exhibition of Exhibitions (EoE) The 2018 EoE showcased all the exhibitions to be held during the year and afforded visitors the opportunity to choose which events they will participate in and plan their marketing efforts better for the year ahead. The EoE will again take place at the end of January 2019 and is set to bring the industry alive with possibility. • Exhibitions as a Marketing Channel Through our collaboration with key media partners we are working towards establishing exhibitions as the marketing channel of choice, educating our exhibitors as to how exhibit successfully and using their success stories as the background for recruiting new exhibitors across our members’ portfolios. • Grow our African footprint To become an Association that offers the most value to our Members and Associate Members, we aim to grow our African footprint by recruiting members in other countries on the continent, focusing on venues, organisers and suppliers. • AAXO continues to be the authority and representative of the exhibition organising industry. By directing its efforts towards growing, developing and addressing challenges in the industry AAXO aligns with its mission. AAXO 2019 7
AAXO DIRECTORY Partnerships and Strategies AAXO PARTNERSHIPS AND STRATEGIES “Not in numbers, but in unity that our strength lies” – Thomas Paine AAXO (Association of African Exhibition Organisers) admits that our strength lie not just in the number of members we ABOUT have, but in the unity with key industry stakeholders. We are therefore committed to continuously work with our existing and future partners, and grow the industry as a whole. We understand the value that is magnified when 2017 AAXO several industry players come together, for the advancement of said industry. Although we will continue to run independently, we will collaborate with EXSA on many of the initiatives undertaken by AAXO over the next year. We will continue to run the AAXO ROAR Awards in conjunction with EXSA’s EXSA-LLENCE awards under the industry umbrella EIA (Exhibition Industry Alliance). We also undertake to continue hosting networking events in conjunction with EXSA and provide neutral platforms whereby venues, exhibition organisers and suppliers can get together and do business. We look forward to strengthening our partnerships with all our international counterparts and promote Africa as an exhibition destination that offers world-class events that can compete with the best of the best globally. AAXO is committed to collaborate with the likes of SAT (South African Tourism), SAACI (South African Association for the Conference Industry), The SANCB (South African National Convention Bureau), The EGF (Event Greening Forum) and SACIA (The Southern African Communications Industries Association) to ensure we influence markets beyond our immediate reach. AAXO looks forward to servicing the industry we all have a stake in, for the advancement of all. AAXO PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT • Increase membership base in South Africa & Africa – AAXO already represents more than 80% of the industry in South Africa. Our next step is to grow our African members. • Lobbying government in South Africa and Africa (DTI/SARS/Convention Bureaus/Embassies/High Commissions) – AAXO has numerous international partnerships. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the industry. • Address venue integrity in Africa – AAXO strives to ascertain agreements with venues to ensure competitive venue bookings are done honourably and does not threaten the survival of key industry events. • Speed dating for Organisers and Suppliers – an initiative to expand your professional network. • Develop partnerships in the Accommodation and Travel sectors – an example is Tsogo Sun, where members get a discount. • Industry Research – With the funding of SAT, we have commissioned NWU to refresh the research conducted in 2016. The research is approaching its final stages and we look forward to revealing the outcomes at a formal media briefing in early 2019! 8 AAXO 2019

Market Research DIRECTORY Exhibition market gears for growth in 2019 AAXO The 21st UFI Global Exhibitions Barometer report underlines what local exhibition industry stakeholders have believed all along – the days of the exhibition are far from over. Despite increasing competition, a dramatic change in the marketing channels available to industries and brands, and ABOUT an increasingly digitally-savvy market base, the face-to-face networking value and hands-on impact of exhibitions still cannot be beaten for return on investment. 2017 AAXO The UFI Global Exhibitions Barometer results indicate that the exhibition industry looks set to continue to grow as one of the most cost-effective marketing and sales channels available to business. The Global Barometer survey, which has been measuring the pulse of the exhibition industry since 2008, covered a record number of 312 companies from 55 countries in 14 major markets in the 21st survey. In this report, all four global regions reported a positive development simultaneously for the first time in ten years. Turnover was overwhelmingly reported to be increasing across the second half of 2018 – a trend that was expected to continue into 2019. Operating profits also looked positive, although profit expectations were not as high as those on turnover. Most companies maintained a good level of operating profit performance in 2018, with over 40% of companies from all regions declaring an increase of more than 10% compared to 2016. In South Africa, 68% of respondents predicted an increase in turnover in the second half of 2018 and 69% expected increased turnover in 2019. However, respondents were less bullish on profit: 30% said they expected increased operating profits over 10% in the second half of 2018 and 39% expected to increase operating profits by over 10% in 2019. 29% predicted stable of slightly downward operating profits in the second half of 2018, and 33% expected stable or slightly reduced profits in 2019. Globally, exhibition companies cited the state of the economy in their home markets (24%), competition in the industry (18%), global economic developments (18%) and internal challenges (17%) such as human resources as the main challenges impacting their business. In South Africa, the state of the economy had a greater impact on business, with 32% citing it as a challenge. 8% also said regulatory and stakeholder issues were a challenge. However, South African companies ranked lower than the global averages on the impact of issues such as competition in the industry (13% in SA vs 18% globally) and the impact of digitisation (4% in SA vs 10% globally). With digitisation accelerating in businesses around the world, the Global Barometer started a year ago to also focus on the state of digital activity in the exhibition industry. The results show that the majority of companies have responded to the accelerating process of digitisation in the exhibition industry. Digitisation of Marketing Strategy increased massively in global markets, but the Middle East and Africa seems to be following slower, with only 52% of companies adding to their digital services and products around exhibitions. Compared to Europe (73%) and the Americas (68%), we have some catching up to do. In South Africa, 44% of respondents said they had added digital products and services around their existing exhibitions, compared with 64% globally. Only 6% in South Africa (vs 23% globally) had developed a digital transformation strategy for individual exhibitions or products; and 11% in South Africa (vs 22% globally) had created a designated digital function in top management. In contrast, 67% in South Africa (vs 64% globally) had changed internal processes and workflows to digital processes. In an increasingly digital world, digital channels offer significant opportunities to expand the reach and impact of exhibitions, as well as to streamline workflows and make the most of scarce resources. But ultimately, ‘digital isolation’ is making face to face engagement and sales more important than ever before. No other marketing channel can deliver the engagement with all five senses that exhibitions can. As long as exhibition organisers continue to add valuable content, innovate and provide a lasting visitor experience, the exhibition industry will continue to thrive, despite external challenges. 10 AAXO 2019
Market Research B2B Events ABOUT AAXO Business to Business (B2B) events are consistently gaining popularity both in Africa and across the globe. As the most popular B2B events, exhibitions are perfectly positioned to leverage this increasing popularity to both enhance the industry as a whole as well as to drive growth across economies. That is exactly what AAXO seeks to achieve through our mandate of formalising and standardising the African exhibition industry. This is why we invest significantly in understanding not only the trends but also the impact of exhibitions. It is nothing new that B2B events like exhibitions drive growth. After all, that is why our industry exists. We see this growth in the amount of industry players, in the returns our organiser membership base show to their clients and/or companies as well as in the substantial contribution that the industry makes to both South Africa and Africa’s economies (you would have read all about this in our previous directory that detailed the results from the research into the impact of the exhibition industry in Africa, conducted by Grant Thornton). Just how much growth B2B events enable has always been a tad unclear, until now. Recent research shows some interesting trends, such as: • The amount of people from Africa who express interest in B2B events across the continent has increased by a substantial 20 times in the last four years (that is a 40% year on year growth). • The African countries with the most active exhibition industries are South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Kenya (with interest in South Africa and Nigeria’s exhibition industries literally doubling in the last four years). • Nigeria is a popular exhibition destination for people from South Africa, Kenya and Ghana, while South Africa is very popular among people from Botswana. • By contrast, South Africans travel mostly to Ghana, while Kenyans go to Uganda and Nigerians tend to look for exhibitions outside the boarders of Africa. • The United States of America, Canada and China are the top three countries Africans visit to attend exhibitions abroad. • There is a growing trend for Africans to visit North America for Agriculture, Forestry and Education-related exhibitions, while France attracts Africans interested in Fashion, Apparel and Textiles. China is popular for Industrial Engineering and Electronic exhibitions and the United Arab Emerates draws African delegates mostly for its Cosmetics, Medical and Pharmaceutical exhibitions. • Within Africa itself, different regions are also gaining popularity for different categories in the exhibition industry. Egypt, for example, has built a reputation as an attractive destination for Medical and Pharmaceutical exhibitions, while Kenya is known for exhibitions in Building and Construction. Nigeria has become a powerhouse in the Power and Energy-related exhibition space, while South Africa is breaking new grounds as a Food and Beverage exhibition hub. • The most inbound guests come to Africa from India, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Interestingly, people from Pakistan also show substantial interest in visiting exhibitions in Africa (more so even than Chinese people). • What brings the world to Africa? Exhibitions in Building and Construction, Food and Beverages, Industrial Engineering, Power and Energy, Agriculture and Forestry, Medical and Pharmaceutical, Hotel and Restaurants, Industrial Products, Education and Training and Apparel and Clothing are the most popular. In addition to the amount of growth that so many exhibitions can bring for organisers and local exhibitors alike, there is also real value in the economic impact that exhibitions have due to the fact that they invite hoards of people from all over the world. What better way to strengthen international relationships and trade than to show the world what Africa is worth through our fantastic exhibitions. AAXO 2019 11
Market Research DIRECTORY Africa: the new trade frontier AAXO Early in 2017, AAXO released ground-breaking industry-first research into the economic impact of the exhibition industry in South Africa. Since then, AAXO has set it sights on Africa as a whole – having extended our mandate to formalise and standardise the exhibition industry not just in South Africa but on the entire African continent. By acting as the champion for the exhibition industry in Africa and offering our diverse African membership base a platform to (1) ABOUT connect with other members, suppliers and exhibitors, (2) learn through our extensive and comprehensive organiser and exhibitor training days, (3) gain credibility by using our AAXO Badge of Approval and the ABC exhibition audits and 2017 AAXO (4) voice their needs and opinions in fdforums like the Open Conversations AAXO pioneered in 2017. With this new and improved mission to drive growth in the exhibition industry across Africa, AAXO has expanded our area of interest to Africa as a whole when it comes to conducting research. We quickly discovered interesting facts about trade in Africa: USA Brazil UK France Holland Germany Italy India China Japan AFRICA’S TOP 10 BILATERAL TRADERS AFRICA’S EXPORTS TO BRICS COUNTRIES AFRICA’S IMPORTS FROM BRICS COUNTRIES In addition to substantial trading between BRICs countries, Africa is also trading internally. So much so, that over the past 5 years, the intra-African exports average share of total African exports stood at 11%, with fuels and mining constituting two thirds of Africa’s total merchandise exports for 2010. 12 AAXO 2019
Market Research Africa: the new trade frontier ABOUT AAXO AFRICA’S MOST EXPORTED COMMODITIES There has long been debate about the African middle class: who they are, which countries in Africa have the biggest middle class demographic and how this group of the population can be grown to help drive Africa’s economic development as a whole. Research shows that Nigeria and Ethiopia are tied for the biggest middle class population (8.62%), followed by Sudan (6.87%) and South Africa (4.24%).
