Dear Colleague, I first want to express my deep condolences to everyone who has lost family, friends, colleagues, or any loved one to this pandemic. I want to share with you my vision for moving TPA forward into the new year. I sincerely hope that my vision for 2021 aligns with your vision and the reasons you are considering TPA membership. I can summarize my vision with two words. Advocacy and Engagement. I think of advocacy in two ways. First, advocacy for the profession and second, advocacy that uses the science of psychology for the social and community good. TPA has long been the only organization in Texas advocating for psychologists both legislatively and on regulatory matters. Many psychologists became active in TPA in order to engage in this type of advocacy and the 2018 Strategic Plan identified advocacy for the profession of psychology as the number one priority for TPA members. So, it was a bitter pill to swallow when our efforts did not prevail during the consolidation battle. But we went on and we go on. Importantly, Jessica Magee and Kevin Stewart have moved us beyond years of animosity between TPA and the associations of the other behavioral health boards to forge alliances that have the prospect of fighting encroachments on our professional identities and ethical standards of practice. This is evident in our recent combined effort to roll back changes to the SW rules regarding ethical protections for LGBTQ and disabled clients. We are gearing up right now for the legislative session and anticipate some important work to be done regarding telehealth and other practice and regulatory issues. This is a great opportunity for advocacy by our membership. But advocacy isn’t only about protecting the practice interests of psychology. Advocacy is also about using the science of psychology to advance social justice issues in Texas. This type of advocacy was also identified as important to TPA members during the strategic planning process. Social justice advocacy, I would argue, is the responsibility of psychologists in carrying out the psychological ethical principle of justice. The second word of my vision is engagement. Successful advocacy requires engagement. I increased my engagement with TPA significantly several years ago in order to advocate. You may have heard others quote the late TPA President Lynn Rehm as saying “TPA is whoever shows up.” When I first heard this statement, it explained perfectly what I personally was doing at this place and time in TPA. I had shown up. Something else we learned from our Strategic Planning Survey is that TPA members want to be engaged. The pandemic and the racial justice movement have spurred psychologists into action. It is the responsibility of TPA leadership to make opportunities for engagement available and accessible. We can continue to build upon Dr. Mooney’s Inclusion initiative to keep saying you are welcome at TPA, we value and respect the talents that you bring, and to please show up. And for those of you who have been disappointed in TPA in the past but have found your way back, I welcome you. I would like to end with an observation that Advocacy and Engagement require teamwork. Teamwork requires valuing each other’s opinions and diverse talents and always showing respect for individuals. I have always believed that the science and practice of psychology is one that values collaboration. In psychology we build upon the work that others have done before us. When we find mistakes, we are humble and seek to correct them. Let’s keep that process going in TPA. We stand together to keep moving toward something bigger than we can achieve alone. So please bring your talents, your knowledge, your energy and passion and join me in Advocacy and Engagement for TPA. Fran Douglas, PsyD 2021 President, Texas Psychological Association
