Texas Association of Basketball Coaches PO Box 2886 Sugar Land, TX 77478 office@tabchoops.org www.tabchoops.org Phone: 281-313-8222 Vol. XLIII No. 3 Good Luck With Your 2020 Season Optimism is sky high this time of year as we begin our basketball seasons. Coaches and players have worked extremely hard with aspirations of winning district titles, qualifying for the playoffs, and ultimately earning a trip to the state tournament! From my high school days when only one team per district qualified for the playoffs to nowadays where up to four teams punch their playoff ticket, the excitement is palpable. Many district races come down to the outcomes of games on the last day of the regular season. Still, other districts’ playoff reps are determined via tie-breaker games. Rarely does any season go smoothly without some form of adversity. As coaches, we need to right the ship for our team when the going gets rough. Players look to coaches for direction in navigating these turbu- lent times. We, as coaches, are at our best when providing leadership and guidance for our student-athletes. May you all have healthy successful seasons! Best Swishes, Mike Carrabine, 2020-2021 TABC President TABC is happy to announce that the 2021 clinic will remain in San Antonio and move into the beautiful Dub Farris Center where speakers will be able to do their presentations on the court and providing plenty of space for coaches to socially distance. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 4 TABC in association with the Texas Athletic Directors Association is again offering complimentary membership to Texas Athletic Directors, Principals and Superinten- dents. Many of these people are former coaches and friends of basketball. We wel- come them and would like their input on how we can help their basketball programs. If your administrators would like to join TABC, we need their e-mail address, a mailing address and phone number so they can receive our newsletter and we can create their new membership card and mail it to them. Please share this information with ad- ministrators. We would like to say welcome to those who have already joined. We appreciate your support. Milestone Awards TABC presents Milestone Awards to Texas coaches who reach their 300 th varsity win and each multiple of 100 thereafter. If you reach one of those milestones during the sea- son, please let TABC know immediately so that we can order your plaque. Plaques com- memorating 300 and 400 wins can be picked up at the TABC clinic or it will be mailed to you. Plaques for 500 and subsequent milestones are presented during a halftime ceremo- ny at the UIL state tournaments. We must send a list of all coaches who will participate in that ceremony by February 1, so please don’t wait until after your season is over to let us know about your achievement. Please e-mail TABC at office@tabchoops.org when you reach your 300th, 400th, 500th and subsequent century marks. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 5 Hoops for Hope - Texas Style TABC would again like to encourage our members to send us any news on activities in which your teams participate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other dis- eases. We have called our coordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to in- clude the many causes for which you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to provide assistance for, or in honor of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs. Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear bas- ketball shoes during their game. Others have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” Please send TABC news and pictures you have from your events dur- ing the season. They serve to give you and your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ideas on how they might be able to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it. Stan Wilkins, longtime TABC member and Houston area basketball coach passed away suddenly on October 23. A native of Michigan, Stan played college basketball at Southeastern Community College and Mississippi State University. After college graduation he relocated to Houston working for St Luke’s hospital. In 1992 he began his coaching and teaching career at Fort Bend ISD as an assistant coach at Dulles, Elkins, Marshall and Ridge Point with a short tenure at North Shore HS with his good friend Gary Nichols. Stan was married to Cheryl Tumble in 1989 and they had a daughter, Court- ney Renee in 1996. Stan was truly a friend to all and will be greatly missed. He was 65 years old. On November 1, while riding his mountain bike in the Hill Country near his home, D.W. Rutledge crashed and sustained serious injuries including a concussion, shoulder injury, collapsed lung, 10 broken ribs, a broken sternum and broken ver- tebrae. After 5 days in the hospital he was allowed to come home to continue healing. D.W. was an All American line- backer at Texas Lutheran University and coached at several colleges with Coach Jim Wacker, his college coach, before settling into his legendary career at Converse Judson where he won numerous states championships. He is a past presi- dent of THSCA and was the executive director for 20 years. His wife Kathy, always his #1 cheerleader, is now his head nurse. Matt Embry, former Lubbock HS boys’ basketball coach, died November 9 of liver and kidney failure after being airlifted to a San Antonio hospital. He had contracted COVID earlier but his wife Allyson indicated that his doctors said there is no indication that the virus caused his organs to fail. Matt had been at Lubbock HS since 2016 after 4 years as head coach at Pampa where his teams were 74-34. A graduate of Canyon Randall HS he played for TABC past-president Les Broadhurst before graduating from West Texas A&M. He began his coaching career at Westover MS in Canyon before moving to Pampa as an assistant and later head coach. He is survived by his wife and 2 children. He was 37 years old. The 29th annual South Padre Island Basketball Clinic is set for April 30 and May 1, 2021. Once again it features some top college and high school speakers, plus a weekend on the beautiful South Padre Island seashore. Please see the flier in- cluded in this newsletter for more details. San Antonio Lutheran boys coach Bruce Biedinger is starting his 24 th season with Mustangs and opened the season by coaching in his 800th game at Lutheran. A native of Ohio, he coached in Tennessee, North Carolina and Illinois before moving to San Antonio where he met his wife and stayed put. The TABC board member is closing in on career win #500 with a good nucleus returning from a 24 game winner. Former TABC board member Rusty Segler had heart surgery in late October to replace a valve and the surgery, done in Houston, went well. Rusty retired last year after a long successful career at Liberty Hill, Concordia University, A&M Con- solidated and Little Elm to name a few. He and his wife moved to College Station where he continues his battle with can- cer. Keep him in your prayers until he gets the “all clear”. Elevating Your Potential is a new book written by former SMU athlete Jeremiah Gaines. A guide for student athletes tran- sitioning to college sports, it gives helpful information about everything from grades and testing in high school to transfer portals in college. Go to www.elevatetoelevatellc.com to find out how to order. It is worth the $15 and the price goes down if you want to order copies for your athletes.
