CLOSING THE GAP - TEACHING AND NURTURE IN THE POST LOCKDOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL Thursday 7 January 2021 09:45 – 15:30 Presented by: Jonathan Smeeton & Katie Skinner, Meadowfield STLS Susan Cassingham, Meadowfield STLS ISA Workshop objectives Students who withdraw from the classroom often have a profound impact on their peers, teacher time and their own wellbeing and morale. This one-day workshop will present a range of strategies and ideas to support professionals who work in primary settings to further develop their nurture offer, both in the classroom and specific provision, in order to further support wellbeing and success. Workshop content The practicalities of setting up a primary nurture group Using assessment tools such as Boxall to baseline wellbeing, measure progress and plan specific and effective intervention Practical suggestions as to how to support those who choose to withdraw How to support staff with their own understanding of the importance of nurture The role of neuroscience and attachment to support understanding of possible behaviours How to develop nurture within the classroom and support effective transition back to class The importance of teaching social skills alongside academic skills Understanding the key risk factors and how to apply protective factors How to support students to understand, identify and name emotions in order to better articulate feelings, improve self-regulation and be willing to seek and accept support. DOWN SYNDROME Friday 15 January 2021 09:45 – 15:30 Presented by: Sophie Cartwright, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives This one-day workshop focusses on understanding what Down Syndrome is and the associated learning profile. Participants will consider the strengths and challenges presented by the learning profile. Participants will be given strategies to support learning, behaviour and social and emotional development. Workshop content This workshop will: Raise participants’ awareness of Down Syndrome and the associated specific learning profile Look at the various challenges and strengths that this profile can present as children grow and develop Include opportunities to consider what good practice in the classroom might look like and specific learning strategies that could support progress Look at some aspects of social development and positive behaviour strategies Target Audience All staff working in Early Years settings, primary and secondary schools. PHONICS FOR BEGINNERS Monday 18 January 2021 13:00 – 16:00 Presented by: Sophie Cartwright, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives To develop participants’ phonological awareness. This half-day workshop will provide participants with an overview of phonic development and how to implement phonics in the classroom. DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY Friday 22 January 2021 09:45 – 15:30 Presented by: Katie Skinner, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives It is increasingly common for children to self-identify as “anxious” “stressed” or “overwhelmed”. In this workshop we will explore the impact of anxiety on engagement and learning in young people. We will explore positive, practical strategies and approaches that can be used in school settings to develop emotional literacy in children and encourage the development of personalised coping strategies. LEGO AS AN INTERVENTION Two-part course on: Friday 26 February 2021 09:45 – 12:15 Friday 26 March 2021 13:30 – 15:30 Presented by: Katie Skinner, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives In this practical two-part course, delegates will gain an understanding of the theory and practicalities for the use of LEGO kits with children who have communication and interaction difficulties, as well as guidance and feedback on setting up and running LEGO groups in school. Workshop content Originally devised in the U.S. as a therapeutic intervention by Daniel Legoff, there is now a growing interest amongst schools in the use of LEGO kits to promote the development of communication and interaction skills in children and young people with ASD. The format and structure of a LEGO group session combined with the inherently motivating and engaging aspect of using LEGO kits to build a model, has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the development of key pro-social skills. We will also consider how other toys and games can be adapted to suit the LEGO intervention model to ensure it is engaging and motivating for all young people, including adaptations that can be made for very young children. PLAY & FRIENDSHIP SKILLS Friday 5 March 2021 09:45 – 15:30 Presented by: Katie Skinner, Meadowfield STLS Susan Cassingham, Meadowfield STLS ISA Workshop objectives The skills of play and friendship are an integral step in developing healthy relationships and learning to turn take, share and collaborate. Some children, including those with social communication difficulties, may need additional structure and support to develop and generalise these skills. Workshop content This one-day workshop will provide a breakdown of the range of skills necessary to establish and maintain a friendship and offer strategies for their application Participants will consider the normal development of friendships and how supporting pupils at their correct developmental stage is preferable to placing expectations on outcomes by age. Participants will consider the value of play as a method of relieving stress and anxiety amongst children. Participants will consider when, where and how friendship skills programmes can be delivered so that there is a measurable impact on learning, behaviour and wellbeing for pupils Participants will consider what the structure and content of a friendship or play skills group might be, in particular regard to children and young people with social communication difficulties. Participants will receive a range of practical resources and strategies including: A two-part friendship skills pack that may be used to deliver a friendship skills group for children and young people with social communication difficulties. A play skills pack that may be used to support staff to develop inclusive playtime practices and provide structures and ideas for developing supported play as well as supporting children to develop confidence with their peers and on the playground. Target Audience This workshop has been designed for staff working with primary aged children but will have some relevance for older pupils. FINE MOTOR SKILLS, DEVELOPING HANDWRITING & ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF RECORDING THE PRIMARY CURRICULUM Monday 8 March 2021 09:45 – 12:45 Presented by: STLS Physical Disability Team Workshop objectives This half-day workshop will help teachers develop an understanding of the impact of fine motor difficulties in access to the curriculum and how to overcome them. For some children their handwriting difficulties may impact on their ability to make progress in English and other written subjects. Alternative methods for recording of their understanding and knowledge supports teacher assessment and pupil self- esteem. For some young people, the use of assistive technology may be the way forward and we will look at when to consider introducing it and what sort of adaptations may be helpful. ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF RECORDING THE SECONDARY CURRICULUM INCLUDING ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY KS2-KS4 Monday 8 March 2021 13:15 – 16:15 Presented by: STLS Physical Disability Team Workshop objectives This half-day workshop will provide ideas and strategies for a young person has failed to develop effective handwriting to meet the curricular needs going into upper KS2 and into secondary school. Some students may benefit from intensive handwriting interventions while others will benefit from alternative paper-based methods of recording because their handwriting is only functional. We will consider alternative ways of recording understanding and knowledge which are not paper based, as well as the use of assistive technology and its implications for public examinations. MAKATON LEVELS 1 & 2 This workshop will take place over 4 evenings: Thursday 11 March 2021 Thursday 18 March 2021 Thursday 29 April 2021 Thursday 6 May 2021 18:30 – 21:00 Presented by Makaton Regional Tutors: Sophie Cartwright & Ruth Smith, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives Participants will learn the principles underlying the use of signing and symbols. They will learn signs and symbols for stages 1-4 and additional of the Core Vocabulary. Workshop content The Level 1 and 2 course provides a practical introduction to the Makaton language programme. Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work Participants will learn the signs and symbols for Stages 1-4 and additional of the Core Vocabulary Participants will consider what signs and symbols are relevant for them and plan for how to establish and maintain an inclusive signing environment You will receive two course manuals, which include the signs and symbols that you have learnt and you will also be given a certificate of attendance. CHILDREN WHO JUST SAY NO! Thursday 18 March 2021 09:45-12:45 Presented by: Katie Skinner and Jamie Elliott, Meadowfield STLS Workshop objectives As toddlers, children quickly learn to say ‘No!’. For some children, ‘No’ becomes and remains a coping mechanism, a simple but effective default answer for any situation they perceive as challenging. This workshop will enable participants to recognise and support children who have difficulties with managing demand and consider a range of practical approaches to support the development of positive coping strategies within the mainstream school setting. This one-day workshop will look at the causes of this, what assessments might be helpful in early identification and how we can provide effective intervention to improve the outcomes for learners who can read but not understand. Workshop content The day is split into four distinct sessions so that the information and ideas shared are age appropriate for the child that you are supporting, but you are welcome to attend the whole day if you feel that would be beneficial. It will incorporate not only the theory behind the condition but also practical step by step strategies that can be followed to help reduce the child’s symptoms. As educators we seek to support children experiencing obvious trauma, to lessen its impact on their learning and their long term wellbeing. Participants will consider how we support young people for whom trauma is part of their everyday lived reality. We will look at how can we seek to create environments that enable children to develop coping strategies that will reduce their vulnerability to common adverse experiences including divorce, deprivation, prejudice and bereavement. PERCY Percy is the STLS Wellbeing Support Dog. In his role he visits Early Years settings and mainstream primary and secondary schools. Percy visits schools as part of pupils’ personalised curriculums, as a reward for pupils and quite simply to add a feel good element to the children and staff’s day. In 2019 Percy qualified as a Pets as Therapy (PAT) dog. Percy is now two years old and has been a valued part of the team since he was 12 weeks old.
