Texas Association of Basketball Coaches PO Box 2886 Sugar Land, TX 77478 office@tabchoops.org www.tabchoops.org Phone: 281-313-8222 Vol. XLIII No. 6 Congrats to All and See You at the Clinic... What a year! Congrats to all on completing the 2020-2021 basketball season. With a myriad of challenges over- come, this challenging season indeed tested our resilience as coaches and leaders of young men & women. In true serv- ant leadership fashion, Texas basketball coaches once again came through in a BIG way. I had the privilege of witnessing all 12 UIL state championship games in San Antonio. All 24 teams participating in the state finals were outstanding! Congrats to all of our state champions!! I can say with certainty that Texas high school basketball and our coaching fraternity have never been better. As we inch closer to normalcy, please make plans to attend the in person annual TABC clinic May 13-15 in San An- tonio. We’ll again have outstanding speakers from some of the best programs across the nation. I know the ideas I’ve gleaned from the TABC clinics in the past have been invaluable in coaching my teams. I also enjoy meeting with Texas coaches informally at the clinic to catch up and make new acquaintances. Sign up early & I’ll see you all in SATX!! TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 6 TABC presents Milestone Awards to Texas coaches who reach their 300 th varsity win and each multiple of 100 thereafter. If you reach one of those milestones during the season, please let TABC know immediately so that we can order your plaque. Plaques commemorating 300 and 400 wins can be picked up at the TABC booth at the clinic in May. Plaques for 500 and subse- quent milestones are presented during a halftime ceremony at the UIL state tournaments. We must send a list of all coaches who will participate in that ceremony to the UIL by February 1, so if you feel you will likely get your 500 th or subsequent century mark victory this season, let us know NOW. Please don’t wait until after your season is over to let us know about your achieve- ment. E-mail TABC at office@tabchoops.org with documentation of your record when you reach your 300th, 400th, 500th and subsequent century marks. Milestones Each will receive a plaque from TABC commemorating their achievement. Since we were unable to hand out plaques for 500+ wins at the state tournament, all plaques will be mailed. 1200 Rhonda Farney Georgetown G 1000 Chuck Darden Shallowater G 900 Mark Myers Lampasas G 800 Richard Hoogendoorn Schulenburg B San Antonio Antoni- 700 Rudy Bernal an B S A Veterans Memo- 700 Christina Camacho rial G 700 Pam Crawford Clear Springs G 700 Jim Forbes El Paso Andress B 700 Russell Perkins Argyle B 700 Tobin Reid Porter B 600 Leslie Broadhurst Canyon Randall B 600 Darrell Hagemann Round Rock McNeil B 600 Tim Kaman Fredericksburg B 600 Jill McDIll Sunnyvale G 600 Billy Mack Steed Paris B 600 JD Sullivan College Station B Continued on page 7

TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 8 People, Places and Things In January Keldyn Schubert of McLeod broke the state career assist record held by Elgin Katt of Cross Plains with 1,142. He ended the season and his career with a final total of 1,182. As a freshman (2520 and sophomore (338) he played at Avinger for his father David Schubert. His junior (388) and senior (205) years he played for Steven Lambeth at McLeod and the Longhorns were region II-2A quarterfinal- ists. His state record could have been even higher without the shortened Covid season. James Crawford of Aransas Pass scored 2,039 points in his high school career for Coach Glen Hayes in spite of being injured for 12 games during this shortened 2020-21 season. He was a part of 105 wins and also added 611 assists. Rytis Petraitis of Arlington Oakridge School scored 2,016 career points for Coach Andre Walker’s Owls. This season he averaged 24.6 points per game while leading Oakridge to a 14-2 record (4-0) in winning the SPC North Zone championship. Due to Covid concerns SPC had no playoffs. Rytis will play basketball next year for the Air Force Academy. The Timberwolves of Beaumont United (David Green) brought home the boys 5A state championship with a thrilling overtime win over Dallas Kimball (Nicke Smith). But, it was not Coach Green’s first ro- deo. It is every basketball coach’s dream to make the Final Four and Coach Green has led 5 different schools to the Final Four including Kountze, Beaumont Central, Fort Bend Hightower, North Shore and now United. His last two trips have produced state championships. Terrance Arceneaux, a 6’7 junior on 5A boys state champion Beaumont United, made a three point shot at the buzzer to force overtime in the final against Dallas Kimball. As the overtime period was rapid- ly coming to a close and the Knights holding a two point lead, Arceneaux ends up with the ball in the cor- ner and launches another trey, this one a game winner. Beaumont United 71-Kimball 70 was one among many of the exciting final games at the recent boys and girls state tournament. Several players we tracked earlier maintained their scoring averages and are among the best in Texas. PJ Haggerty of Crosby (Edwin Egans) 33.5 ppg, Landon Condiff of Callisburg (Shad Reed) 32.8 and Ceasar Reyes of Sabinal (Rodger Clark) 31.1 are top boys scorers. On the girls side Kaiya Wynn of Fos- ter (Savitria Williams-Smith) ended up with 29.0 ppg. If you have leaders in 3 point and / or free throws don’t forget to nominate on the TABC website. TABC Camp of Champs Returns We are in the process of finalizing a location for our TABC camp and should know something soon. The dates are pending but our target is mid-June. For safety pur- poses, we are looking at a day camp rather than an overnight camp. Although it will be slightly different from years past, we are very excited to bring back the TABC Camp of Champs with the incredible staff and camp experience that separates us from other camps. Check the TABC website (www.tabchoops.org) for the latest camp information.
TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 9 Hoops for Hope - Texas Style TABC would again like to encourage our members to send us any news on ac- tivities in which your teams participate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other diseases. We have called our coordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to include the many causes for which you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to pro- vide assistance for, or in honor of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs. Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear basketball shoes during their game. Others have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” Please send TABC news and pictures you have from your events during the season. They serve to give you and your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ideas on how they might be able to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it. Bells & Leonard Hoops for Hope Event 2021 Bells and Leonard’s Basketball teams participated in raising money and donated it to the local foundation-Women Rock. Our participating coaches and student athletes raised $2,000.00 for Women Rock and their foundation. We appreciate all the support and contribu- tions our communities gave. Every donation made a difference. We hope to continue the Coaches vs.Cancer Basketball game annually and look to grow our contribution. Together our communities can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
