Introducing the wonderful Alfie Burke! Temple Street – ‘part of our village’ As June is Apert Syndrome Awareness Month, we would like to introduce you to Alfie! Alfie is a happy 3-year-old – the youngest of Sarah and Gavin’s three gorgeous children. Immediately after Alfie’s birth, his parents knew he would have different needs. Alfie had Apert Syndrome which causes premature fusion of the skull, face and limbs. It requires surgery to improve hand function and skull surgery to make sufficient room for brain growth. His mum, Sarah, knew that Temple Street was where Alfie needed to be. He was placed in Michael’s B ward, where he was treated in style like a VIP to his own room! “The nurses were wonderful, and we knew Alfie would be loved and cared for like he was their own.” Over the first worrying days, Alfie’s parents met with lots of doctors, specialists and multi-disciplinary teams. But Alfie’s main team would be the Craniofacial team. Alfie’s parents were informed that Alfie would need to have multiple surgeries before his 18th birthday. This came as a shock to both Sarah and Dad Gavin, but they were reassured by the team that Alfie would be expertly cared for. Sarah recalls that emotional time: “One of the most challenging things about your child having extra medical needs is acceptance. Accepting the new normal that becomes your life, that attending the hospital for regular check-ups is part of your life now. But all that is made easier by all the friendly staff.” To date, Alfie has had multiple hand operations and surgeries to expand his skull. He will have more surgeries throughout his life, but Sarah knows he is getting the very best care: “Every person in the hospital plays an integral role, from the cleaning staff, admin staff and of course all the lovely nurses on the day ward who hold a special place in our hearts – they are so supportive and a great comfort to us when Alfie’s gone Alfie’s loving care for surgery. They say it takes a village to raise a child and we feel and treatment lucky that all the Temple Street staff – and of course, the hospital’s wouldn’t be possible amazing donors are part of our village.” without your kindness. Thank you Conditions like Alfie’s require very specialised care, technology and facilities. so much! You make all of that possible. Thank you so much!
Rosie Connolly’s handbag post that nearly broke instagram In December, influencer Rosie Connolly took the internet by storm and raised a fantastic €287,636 for both Temple Street Foundation and CMRF Crumlin. The massive sum was raised in less than two weeks, after Rosie published an Instagram post offering her followers the opportunity to win a designer handbag. All that was required was to simply donate a minimum of €5 to the cause. Rosie massively exceeded her expectations, with her original goal being to raise €5,000 for the charities. We are overwhelmed by the support from Rosie, from every single person who has donated to the fundraiser, and to all of you who shared it with your friends and family. You are all truly incredible! Every donation received will make such a big difference to our little patients in the hospital. Rosie’s brave journey One-week-old Rosie had suddenly begun to cry. She was in obvious distress. Rosie’s parents, Susie and JP O’Brien, knew she was in trouble. It was a bank holiday Monday, their GP wasn’t available so they took Rosie straight to the Paediatric Unit in the A&E in Mullingar. The diagnosis was a serious one – Strep B Bacterial Meningitis. Rosie was immediately sent to Temple Street by ambulance, with her parents following behind in their car, completely in shock. By the time they arrived at ICU in Temple Street, Rosie had already been seen and her treatment had started. That night Susie and JP slept in two reclining chairs in the family room. Susie will never forget the experience: “I use the word ‘slept’ but we didn’t. We were very worried obviously, but the staff were incredible and doing their best to reassure us. I knew she was in good hands. The one-on-one care around the clock Rosie got was just fabulous, it meant that me and my husband could leave her cot-side temporarily and know we weren’t leaving her on her own.” Susie recalls the stressful moment when Rosie had to go for her MRI scan. She had to be sedated. Susie waited outside, her heart in turmoil. Once the scan was completed, Susie got to hold little Rosie again. It was good news. The MRI was all clear. You can imagine what a huge relief it was for her family. It’s your Behind every child’s story in Temple Street is a lesser known story – generosity that the story of how your generosity directly connects with little patients allows us to like Rosie. It’s the story of the vital equipment and upgraded facilities care so well that your donation makes possible. Crucial improvements that make for wonderful every patient’s and family’s journey less stressful, more comfortable patients like and more positive. And thankfully, Susie tells us that Rosie is doing Rosie. great: “She’s a happy and hilarious little woman, who’s getting set to start primary school next September. She’s practically perfect, if she wasn’t such a fussy little eater!” Coincidently, Rosie’s birthday is April 24th – which is also World Meningitis Day. Two very important and memorable events!

licia’s Mum - Siobhan Smith Little Alicia Smith: a two-and-a-half year-old superhero Mum, Siobhan Smith, describes her daughter Alicia’s serious health challenges from birth and her deeply-felt thanks to Temple Street’s wonderful supporters. “ On July 8th, 2017, our precious girl, Alicia, came into our world. Little did we know the dramatic journey that lay ahead and the wonderful expert loving care she would receive in Temple Street. Alicia was born in Cavan General Hospital and within an hour she was rushed to Temple Street where she was diagnosed with a condition that required her to have a colostomy bag fitted. At less than one-day-old, Alicia went for her first surgery. We spent three long and difficult weeks in the High Dependency Unit where the staff were amazing. They taught us incredibly well how to care for Alicia, so that we could bring her home. To our great joy, Alicia was discharged at three-weeks-old and it was amazing to be home – but her journey wasn’t over. In less than a year, Alicia had three more surgeries, with the last of them being a colostomy reversal. Alicia had also been diagnosed with Developmental Bilateral Hip Dysplasia and other difficulties, which would also need treatment and surgery. In August 2018, Alicia had major surgery on her hips and she was placed in a Spica Cast for three months, and then into a Rhino brace for four weeks. Unfortunately, we got the news that this had been unsuccessful, and that both hips were dislocated again. This meant that little Alicia would need to undergo the same major surgery one more time. It was at this time that family and friends decided to do a fundraiser, ‘Raise & Shave’, for Temple Street to try and give back a little for all the amazing help and loving care we had received. The support we received from the community really blew us away – we ended up raising an incredible €14,107.22 for the hospital. Today, we know that our journey with Temple Street is far from over– but we also know we have the doctors, nurses and staff there to thank for how far Alicia has come in her short life. Each time Alicia travels the same journey down to theatre is just like every other time. We are treated with such care and compassion. “ “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the amazing staff at Temple Street – and all the selfless people who donate money – for the extraordinary care and support Alicia receives.” Gifts from people and companies – no matter how big or modest

David Mc Intyre, alo How kindness delivered a with his w ng ife Diane, develope d the Cub bie calm new sensory world Sensory H ub. The Sensory Cubbie Hub Temple Street is the proud first home for the Cubbie Sensory Hub – a new, imaginative environment for people with autism and related conditions. The Cubbie Sensory Hub was created after David and Diane McIntyre’s daughter Ava was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. David remembers the early inspiration for the idea: “We met other parents and started to hear about the barriers they faced. It was at these meetings that we decided to try and help people with Autism.” David and Diane embarked on years of research and came up with the Cubbie concept, a sensory system that promotes participation and inclusion to all people with sensory processing needs. They demonstrated the cubbie to Temple Street for World Autism Day in 2018. As Orla Heaney, our Autism Nurse Specialist recalls: “It was clear that the cubbie could be an asset to the patients – a system that fits in any space and adapts to meet the sensory needs of each person. We found a great sponsor in KPMG so we now have the hub installed in our outpatient department and we’ve had amazing feedback from families.” You can be part of Temple Street’s wonderful Circle of Care Volunteer Volunteer your time Make a and help at one of Donation Temple Street’s events or Every gift helps to change the collections. life of a sick child.
