This trip was specially prepared to find out more about the Amazon Biome and visit research centers and companies that carry out sustainable forest management in the region. The Amazon is an important biome with territory that corresponds to 6.9 million km² and covers nine countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Peru and Suriname. The Brazilian part is equivalent to 4,2 million km², being the largest Brazilian biome. In addition to its vast territory, another characteristic that impresses 2
is its biodiversity. In the Amazon there are approximately 2,500 species of trees and about 30 thousand species of plants, of the 100 thousand that exist in all of South America, constituting, therefore, a genetic reserve of world- wide relevance. The Amazon rainforest is considered the largest tropical forest in the world. In addition, in terms of water resources, the water produced by the Amazon basin accounts for approximately one-fifth of all the planet’s surface runoff, and its forests act as an important carbon 3
sink, absorbing hundreds of millions of tons of greenhouse gases annually. In this trip we will see the handling and processing of certified tropical timber, forestry research institutes, including silviculture and management trials and at the end we will have a tour in Manaus and surrounding areas navigating the Amazon River and visiting riverside areas. 4
