What’s the ? of today’s stadia 09.30 OPENING KEYNOTE A STADIUM LIFESPAN Commerzbank-Arena: Reaching Old Age as a Teenager Stadia were once buildings for millennia. Now they are buildings for Millenials. Post-war stadia typically remained (and many remain) in operation for 50 years or more. More recently, stadia lifespans have decreased to less than 20 years. Increasing stakeholder demands and rising customer expectations mean that these buildings need constant upkeep and upgrade. We reflect on the success of the Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena (pictured) – one of the standout stadia of the FIFA World™ 2006 projects – and explore the key drivers behind a range of proposed enhancements and modifications to leep it fit for purpose. And how does one deliver it? In Spain, the Global Sports Innovation Center by Microsoft has initiated a new acceleration program dubbed Sport Thinkers Smart Stadium to attract technology-based startups that will help transform the stadium experience. In its first application, the programme is working with Real Sociedad to improve the facilities of its Anoeta Stadium (pictured) that is currently undergoing reconstruction. As we delve into the increasingly ‘stage-managed’ production of the matchday experience – from LED lighting, video replays and audio stings – through to Augmented Reality – what is the expected impact on future stadium design? • Eduardo Plata, Business Development Manager, GSIC by Microsoft, Spain 16
