From the Principal Tēnā koutou, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Dia duit, Greetings Dear Parents, Guardians & Whānau, This week we welcome Pauline Balm and Candice Adams from the Palmerston North Dioceses Education Office. Pauline and Candice will be spending three days with us reviewing the Catholic Character of our school. Thank you to the staff, students and parents who are involved in this and we pray that God will bless our review team as they accompany us this week. Our staff began this term with a full day of training on Restorative Practice. Restorative Practice is a relational approach to school life grounded in beliefs about equality, dignity, mana and the potential of all people. This is a way of being that will support our Catholic Character in particular our beliefs in reconciliation and forgiveness. Martin Luther King said ‘Forgiveness is not something you do once. It is a lifestyle.’ Saint Augustine said ‘for those who love God, he changes everything into good. He even allows our faults and mistakes to be changed into good’. Our young people need constant guidance on these behaviours which will in turn improve their wellbeing. Our staff gave positive feedback about the training and have come away with strategies to use in the classroom; to be curious about behaviour, focus on positive behaviour and teach our girls how to model our values of Hope, Equity, Aroha, Respect and Tenacity. The training was attended by all staff including our caretaker, canteen staff and BOT members. We will continue to focus on this as a way of being at SHC. I had the pleasure of representing our college at the ceremony for the Knighting of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great Tony Murphy, in recognition of the outstanding service to the church in the Palmerston North Diocese. Tony was the CEO of the Dioceses for over 20 years and worked on the transfer of the land and buildings at SHC from the Trust Board to the Palmerston North Dioceses. Tony is a tremendous example of servant leadership and has accomplished many things in his time at the Dioceses. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces from the Catholic Parish of Napier and Hastings in attendance at the ceremony. Our Curriculum leaders are looking into effective reporting and the use of data to inform learnings. Later this term parents and caregivers will receive a progress report along with the achievement record so far this year for their daughter. Parents can then discuss these with teachers at our home-school evening in weeks 8 and 9 this term. This information will be more up to date and informative for parents and give a snapshot of your daughter’s progress. Parents can contact teachers at any time if they are concerned about their daughter’s progress outside of these reporting times. Finally, a warm welcome to our new staff this term. Rachel Read has started in the permanent position of Deputy Principal leading our Pastoral and ICT team. We also welcome Carl Montaperto to the Maths, Science and RE department, Elaine Cook as Teacher Aide to the Learning support department, Ngaia Richardson in the uniform shop and we welcome back Kelly Briggs from her maternity leave. Kelly returns as the Head of Department for Religious Education. Tom Silverwood will continue as Director of Special Character until the end of the year. We wish all our staff well and we ask God to bless them and our students for Term 2. I look forward to seeing you all at out Term 2 school mass at Sacred Heart Hastings on 13 June at 9am. God Bless, Maria Neville-Foster Principal

Pastoral Changes to NCEA Please note the change to the NCEA Resubmissions Policy effective for the beginning of 2021: Schools may offer a resubmission opportunity to students only when a minor error prevents them from reaching an ‘Achieved’ grade. The only change in grade boundary available for resubmissions is from ‘Not Achieved’ to ‘Achieved.’ On this basis, the highest grade that can be awarded as a result of a resubmission of an internal assessment is limited to ‘Achieved’. Schools may continue to offer one resubmission for each assessment event against an Assessment Standard. Mrs Rachel Read—Deputy Principal—Pastoral Academic Teacher only days 2021 Eight additional Teacher-Only Days were allocated in an Accord between the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua. For secondary schools this was to support the implementation of changes to NCEA, and wider strengthening of curriculum, progress and achievement practice. Due to COVID only one day was held in 2020 , with three to be held this year. The first of the 2021 days was on Wednesday 19 May. The focus was to deepen our understanding of two parts of the Ministry of Education’s NCEA Change Programme aimed at strengthening NCEA: - change 2 Equal status for mātauranga Māori in NCEA - change 3 Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements and assessments Teacher only day 3 and 4 will be on the following days: Thursday 12 August 2021 and Tuesday 23 November 2021 Marysia Airey—Deputy Principal (Teaching & Learning)

Student News Breakfast Club Student Voice If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster your gifts will take you places that amaze you.” – Lez Brown Setting goals gives our life direction, boosts our motivation and self- confidence. Goals are about envisioning, planning and committing to achieve our desired result or outcome. Goals are the first and most important step towards gaining success and a future you want; this can be completing an internal due by the end of the week, committing to a sports game afterschool, practicing a musical instrument, or a cultural group. Goals perform a vital role in developing lifelong skills of commit- ment and perseverance and achieving. In the fast-paced world that our lives as students we need a way to bal- ance all the challenges we have from school, sports and other activities. You may feel like you are putting in a big effort for minimal results, have large aspirations but are not sure where to start, to gain momentum to get onto the right, successful path. A goal is like a road map providing directions on how to reach your des- tination by the quickest, safest route. A map will guide you with getting from one point to another, providing a measure and timeline of your progress on the way. Your mindset is your car, the vehicle that carries you on your journey and is the largest influence on how you get to your chosen destination. The goal and your mindset are entwined with each other because, what good is a map without a car to get you anywhere and what use is a car with no destination? Our mindset determines far more than we realise, whether we view a situation as a challenge or a problem. For example, a statement such as ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I’m not good enough’ is setting you up to fail before even attempting to achieve your goal or deciding on a destination. ‘I will practice and get better’ however is a far better mindset and is the first important step to create a secure pathway to reaching your goal. In the Classroom... Y9 Textiles In the first Y9 Textiles option rotation, students worked extremely hard to create their own pattern pieces to make their designs come to life. Holly Elliot-Lawson worked on an original stencil design which she then screen printed onto a t-shirt. She also made a very modern cushion cover complete with a zip. Our Year 11 and 12 students attended the Youth Road Safety Expo in week 2. ‘Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility.’ R. I. D. S. Restraints, Impairment, Distraction, Speed. This is where our students have the chance to be leaders and make a positive change in our community and the road statistics within Hawke’s Bay. Our Year 10 students were an excellent audience for our ‘I am Hope’ Presentation. The girls had two ambassadors (Hayley and Tai) speak to them, spreading hope about dealing with mental health challenges by sharing their own experiences.

Library Corner From the Library Desk As Librarians, we have a passion for championing reading. We are constantly promoting the many mental health and lifestyle benefits of reading books – encouraging our girls to increase their reading no matter what format. We believe reading is the key to a smarter, healthier New Zealand. And if this sounds like the beginning of a Creed, then we now have an inspirational poet, author and publisher to lead the movement. Ben Brown has been appointed as New Zealand’s first reading ambassador. Not from a traditional academic route, but from a life full of lived experiences, Brown is on a mission to move the cause forwards, making connections. “It’s not rocket science…The first thing is engagement” We encourage you to read the full article – and be inspired for you and your family. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/124893677/ben-brown-is-new-zealands-first-reading-ambassador On a more pragmatic note, after the gutting of magazines for teenage girls over the past decade, an Australian publisher has been brave enough to start up a new magazine called “Teen Breathe”. It’s colourful, attractive and full of lively articles, perfect for this age group and we are now subscribing to it. Encourage your girl to come and find it. Also, in collaboration with the Napier Public Library, we are in the process of starting up a Book Club for our avid and interested readers.
