SHANAHTOVAH I il:l.10 ill\Y TERM 3 HIGHLIGHTS SEPTEMBER 2020 / ELUL 5780 HERZLIA CELEBRATING #HERZLIASO EIGHTY OG>O YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
Shan ah Tova from the Herzlia Family On e of the excitin g aspects of the challenges presen ted by the COVI D-1 9 crisis is the fact that Herzlia has continued to function. Despite the lockdown, despite platooning grades, despite a few scares here an d there, our pupils have man aged to participate in so man y events, programmes an d activities but in a different way. As you read through the Highlights you will get a sense that education has been turned on its head and, yes we have had to do that, in order to deliver. Yes, we had to cancel so many milestone moments for our pupils. Our hearts go out to the Matrics who were unable to enjoy those seminal moments - their last Pesach Seder, the Matric Dance, the Chai to Chai Programme, the Farewell Breakfast. All our #HERZLIA80 celebrations had to be cancelled and rearranged in an appropriate and compliant manner. At Herzlia, when faced with adversity and challenges, we don't curl into a little ball and hope it will go away. In fact, our success comes from the fact that we embraced these challenges and found ways to combat them through the learning of new skills that we will most definitely continue to use even when we return to 'normal'. When I look at the incredible amount of work that was produced by our teachers and pupils I can only feel an immense sense of pride. Our Jewish Life and Learning Department have been particularly active with the lead up to Rosh Hashanah, promoting the 40 Days. One Deed. Every Day campaign (Click here). It was such fun watching all the Constantia pupils and staff assemble on the field for their version of Jerusalema (Click here) followed very quickly by the Gan Aviv staff (Click here). Our Grade 9 Student Council produced an amazing orientation video for the new Grade 6s (Click here). It has been a revelation to watch our school community adapt to a new way of life. I am so aware of the difficulties you have faced as parents because so many lines have been blurred - you have had to balance being a teacher and a parent in your home environment. For this we thank you. To our amazing staff, we thank the many of you who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that we maintained our academic excellence as well as balancing the emotional and social needs of our pupils. I wish you all Shanah Tov a U'Metukah, may you have a Good and Sweet NewYear. GEOFF COHEN Director Education, United Herzlia Schools 0I I HERZLIA HIGHLIGHTS SEPTEMBER 2020

The message in this photograph is just wonderful. The obvious effort to reflect the theme (Herzlia's 80th) is clear to see. The contrast between the old and the new, together with a good overall composition makes this photo the winner this year. Second Place: Joseph de Rosner This photo of a close up of an eye really captured my attention. It is a striking and powerful image but would have been even better with something linking it more to the theme. It is clear to see the age of 80 reflected in the wrinkles of the eye. Third Place: Samual Smith I really love the composition of this photo. The way it was shot is very well done indeed. The depth of field is excellent and I like how clear the badge is while the rest blurs out. A very creative slant. 18

rltl\iVl[j t7octor tl\t Herzlitl\ Covisttl\vititl\ A Busy and Interactive Term at Herzlia Constantia By Jos Horwitz Principal Herzlia Constantia Herzlia Constantia has had a very busy and interactive Term 3. We are so proud of how resilient our children are. We have very good protocols in place and the children have adapted very well to social distancing, wearing their masks and sanitizing their hands. We held a class competition for children to dress up to a theme of their choice. Grade 2A decided that their theme would be Doctors and Nurses vs Corona Virus. Soon after Term 3 began, we started collecting teddy bears and soft toys for SA Harvest in honour of Mandela Day on 18 July. The two bins provided were not enough as the toys kept coming and overflowed in the reception room. We are always so proud of how generous our families are and this time was no different. We have been practicing hard with Steph to participate in the Jerusalema Challenge {Click here) to watch the video. This was another fun activity we could engage in while adhering to social distancing regulations. We have some excellent dancers and when the music started, they got into position and showed us how it is done. We held a class competition for children to dress up to a theme of their choice. Grade 2A decided that their theme would be Doctors and Nurses vs Corona Virus. They won because not only were their costumes very convincing but the proud way in which they explained their theme was the real clincher. The children have worked hard and adapted well with online and class learning. W e all look forward to our last term together next term and hopefully one where we can do more sport and other fun activities. 22

Back to School - We're Together Again! By Anton Krupenia Principal Herzlia Constantia Normally when one reflects on a term, one can look back on a variety of events celebrated together as a school community. This term has certainly been very different with many events not being allowed to take place due to the strict COVI D-19 protocols. But we have learned together, davened together, laughed together and managed to share a common experience; both face-to-face at school and via Zoom. And that has been the essence of this term's highlights; being back at school together! The start of Term 3 seems a ver y long time ago as we dealt with the many concerns and procedures in implementing the COVID-19 protocols. We slowly increased and arranged ways to add to our daily attendance numbers, getting to the point we are now, where "For me, my morning and afternoon all children who choose can come to school every day. routines will never be the same. It is The teachers have been amazing in the manner in which a daily gift to be able to greet the they have adjusted to all the demands this term has delivered. For me, my morning and afternoon routines will never be children as they enter the school the same. It is a daily gift to be able to greet the children as each morning. I've learnt so much they enter the school each morning. I've learnt so much more about the children and been afforded the opportunity more about the children and been to engage on a level that is unique and has been a positive afforded the opportunity to engage on many levels. I've met pets, learnt to recognise who is quick and ready to get out the car versus the ones that need on a level that is unique and has been a little more coaxing. I have met much younger siblings, a positive on many levels." seen children's projects and been able to have fun with the children. Watching the manner in which the children have adapted to the new routines, how comfortable they are entering the school and walking down to the hall has been a source of pride. It really takes not having something to realise what one misses. I missed school during lockdown; the laughter and the energy of the children, the passion and enthusiasm of the teachers and the support and interactions with parents. Having everyone back has been the highlight! 25 HERZLIA HIGHLIGHTS I SEPTEMBER 2020

Five Years of Mountain Biking at Herzlia By Katja Steenkamp I still remember those first outrides to the Blockhouse, with a handful of High School pupils. This was about five years ago. Sometimes only one rider joinined us, sometimes none. We quickly realised that riding jeep track every week is not going to cut it for pupils. There needed to be something different to grow the sport, intrigue pupils and maintain their interest. I was due to speak at one of the Friday assemblies to promote our MTB Programme. A day before, Marc Falconer sent me a YouTube clip of a free rider somewhere in the US, ripping trails, flying over massive rock faces and enjoying the stoke of mountain biking. The clip captured so perfectly what we wanted to create at Herzlia - a sport where pupils can fly free, connect with nature and have this shared experience with their fellow pupils. The assembly presentation was a great success. We saw increasingly '• more kids rock up with their bikes, and were faced with a new challenge - creating a programme that accommodated the wide spectrum of fitness and skills levels between Middle and High School pupils. As a result we introduced two riding groups, one for novice riders and one for more experienced riders. The focus in each group was different. Those new to the sport needed to learn how to move over a bike and build bike handling ability, to allow for a safe and fun experience. Which means the focus in this group was more on skills drills and technical training. In comparison, we took our more experienced riders for longer rides, where the focus was on flow, application and exposure to the various trails on Table Mountain and Signal Hill. Mountain biking has grown into a very popular sport at Herzlia. It is incredible to witness the joy and excitement the children bring to the sport. It's not just another afterschool activity but a lifestyle choice and a sport for everyone. It's the most inclusive sport, and brings smiles to everyone's face. It's a sport where everyone can express themselves any way they like. Some learn faster. Some a bit slower. But at the end, every pupil will experience the amazing feeling of surfing trails in their own style. It's incredible to see how pupils improve with every single ride. Some of the pupils have been with us for over four years and started out as wobbly newbies, barely able to navigate gravel roads and now fly down trails that most adults don't dare to look at, let alone ride. We are excited for the trails ahead, and can't wait to share more mountain stories with you.
