Welcome to the winter edition of About Watford. Climate change activists young and old have featured heavily in the media this year and while we might not agree with their tactics and actions, their motivation to save the planet resonates far and wide. Speaking to Watford residents, as I do on a daily basis, I know reducing carbon emissions and improving the environment for the generations to come are major concerns they hold. That’s why at the beginning of the summer the council declared a climate emergency. This was a public testimony of our commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the Peter Taylor borough and of the council itself. At the time of the declaration, we already had several Elected Mayor of initiatives in the pipeline that are aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the town and Watford making Watford and the planet a cleaner, greener place. www.watford.gov. uk/electedmayor You can read about ‘Travel Watford’ - how we plan to transform the way residents, workers and visitors travel sustainably around our town in the pages that follow: the bike hire scheme, the on demand bus and the transport app, which shows you all the options for getting from a to b in the town without having to use your car. You’ll also hear about the action we are taking on the River Colne, cleaning it up, bringing it into the public realm so people can enjoy and connect with nature in its purest form. In this issue you can also read about our Audentior Award winners - I had the great pleasure in handing out the accolades to the very deserving winners at an inspiring awards dinner in October. I am also very proud of the progress we are making on becoming a dementia friendly town with our new Memories café and carers retreat. Our work on improving the town continues, with a major overhaul of key business hub, Clarendon Road, now underway. Plans to reinvigorate the top of the town centre are progressing well following the terrific response we received from people across the borough - a testament to how much Watford residents care about their town. If you have an issue that you think I might be able to help with, please get in touch at themayor@watford.gov.uk or call my office number on 01923 278371. WASTE AND RECYCLING Food for thought We know that on average around 30% of the waste thrown away in black bins is currently food waste which could have been recycled (based on Compositional Analysis carried out in Watford in in 2019). All food waste, including cooked and uncooked food is compostable. This means that the food will break down completely without harming the environment, given the right conditions. Complete the cycle 1. Place all your food waste in kitchen caddy 2. Your food waste is composted 3. Nutrients from food waste help to grow new food 4. We eat the new food produced and any waste goes in your caddy, which completes the cycle What you can recycle l All uneaten food and plate scrapings l Mouldy and out of date food l Meat and fish bones l Tea bags and coffee grounds l Egg shells How to recycle all of your food waste It’s really easy to recycle all of your food waste, just follow these steps: 1. NEWS IN BRIEF Gates Watford’s community restored spirit in a time of conflict is North Watford Cemetery’s iron gates have been restored as part of an ongoing programme of commemorated improvements to the 88 year old facility. A moving service was held to mark the 75th year anniversary of the tragic loss of life of 37 people who were killed in Sandringham Road by a German bomb during World War Two. On Sunday 30 July 1944, a V1 flying bomb killed 37 people on Sandringham Road, injured 64 others, wiped out 50 homes and caused significant damage to 500 other local houses. After the war, local people and other Watford residents came together to rebuild the street (just off St Albans Road) and a communal funeral was held for the victims, with a memorial being erected at North Watford cemetery in August 1950. Councillor Tim Williams, Stanborough ward (second, left) and Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor (third left) by the newly restored gates Extensive corrosion to the metal work and damage caused by years of weathering has been repaired and new paint applied to restore the gates to their former glory.
